Dead Dog Walking

April 15, 2013 By Jodi

For the dogs of  Cartwright Street, there’s only one way out.

If it’s not an illness or injury that kills them, chances are they’ll wind up in a plastic bag tied to a machine that gases them to death.

This is what happens in a city, over-populated with dogs.   Animal control works 24 hours per day trying to round up strays.  Shelters are over-flowing and the Humane Society is filled to capacity. Local vets have helped as much as they can, but there’s only so much they can do.

There are laws on the books regarding spaying, neutering and breeding,  but they are seldom enforced. When they are the fines and punishments are minimal, and so the dog population in Dallas, Texas continues to rage out of control.

Dogs that do get rounded up, have 72 hours before someone claims them. When the 72 hours are up, they are euthanized to make way for the next dead dog walking.

With the shelters full and nowhere to take the dog, a conscious choice is made to drop the unwanted animal somewhere.  So they choose a remote place, like Cartwright Street. It leads into an industrial park, and the odds of the dog finding its way back to the main street are slim. If it does manage more than likely it will get hit by a car or picked up by animal control.

Some of the animals dropped there are not altered, they will continue to breed and bring more and more unwanted dogs into the area.

For some of the lucky ones, workers in the area will pitch in to help buy food.  But some of the dogs aren’t so lucky.  Companies in the area are frustrated with the dogs, and the mess, so they take matters into their own hands.  They capture the dogs and tie them into plastic bags and gas them to death.

Not a pretty picture is it?

Pup-4 Dogs like this little guy.

What’s the reason for the dog over population in Dallas?  Truthfully, it’s greed.  Greedy back yard breeders and puppy millers trying to make a buck.

Let’s just spell it out, there are responsible breeders.   You know them and I know them.  They will make sure every puppy has a home.  They will take the puppy back if for any reason you cannot keep the puppy.  They will retire a bitch or sire with health issues,  they will help you with unexpected health expenses with your dogs.

They are responsible breeders.

The people responsible for the dog over population in Dallas, are not responsible breeders.  They are puppy mills, they are people who care only about one thing, and that is making money, they care nothing about the animal itself.  They use a dog up and then toss it aside like it was a candy wrapper.

I’ve been reaching out to people I know that do animal rescue in hopes that one of them will know someone who can help.

Will you help?  Will you share this on your social media sites?   Will you share it with people you know that do animal rescue?

Pup-2 Will you be the change for these animals?

This ‘N That Thursday – April 4, 2013

April 4, 2013 By Jodi

Today we’re joining our friends at 2 Brown Dawgs for This ‘N That Thursday.

Courtesy of 2 Brown Dawgs Blog Many thanks to 2 Brown Dawgs.

As 2 Brown Dawgs says, “This ‘N That Thursday is for those times when you want to post about unrelated topics or each topic isn’t quite long enough to make up a whole post.  It can be anything you want, so feel free to grab the button and join us!”

LaCrosse

When I started to see the signs to join LaCrosse, I knew the time was coming when we’d once again be sharing our field.  When at all possible I go home at lunch and walk the dogs, just to avoid the hassle.  But there are some days when I just can’t.

Monday was such a day so Hubby said he’d go with me.  Much easier with one dog per handler.

Normally I avoid the field during LaCrosse like it was the plague, but since Hubby was with me, we took a hard trail which would take us through the field on our way out of the park.

Just as we approached the field I saw a dark flash fly across the rocks, I thought to myself is that a dog?

Sure enough about a minute later a black dog that looked like a Labradoodle came tearing down the trail, followed by her owner.

As soon as I saw the dog charging at us, I dropped Delilah’s leash.  Sophie tore past Delilah and me and charged at Hubby and Sampson.

“I’m so sorry” panted her owner, trying desperately to grab her dog, “she was just running with the boys.”  The good news is she was friendly and just full of energy wanting to burn it off, the bad news was that she kept avoiding her owner’s grasp.

She was running back and forth between us, then would zip out and run around us in a circle, always coming back to Delilah.

Guess what happened?

Delilah and Sophie started playing!

Woot woot!!

Perseverance pays off….Just be the dog.

Nosework

Our nosework classes have become progressively harder.  Tuesday night for our last run, Ariane made it super hard.  It took Delilah some time but she’s methodical and eventually she found her treat.

This is This ‘N That Thursday Blog hop hosted by our friends at 2 Brown Dawgs blog, go ahead.  Hop along.

Co-Hosted Follow-Up Friday, March 22, 2013

March 22, 2013 By Jodi

Welcome to the latest edition of co-hosted Follow-up Friday.

https://www.heartlikeadog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/follow-up-friday.jpg

My co-hostess this week has co-hosted with me many times. I learn so much from her, and I love reading about her training sessions with her brown dawgs.

What more can I say about her that I haven’t already said?

How about thank you for co-hosting. 🙂

Don’t forget to stop by and visit the 2 Brown Dawgs blog to check out their Follow-Up Friday post.

SDS – Author’s Note

How reassuring to know I’m not the only one with spoiled dogs. 🙂  Truthfully those nights don’t happen that often, but when they do…well you know.

Happy Saint Patrick’s Day – Author’s Note

I found a delicious gluten-free soda bread that complemented our meal perfectly.  I timed it pretty well so the bread was still slightly warm and the butter melted.

YUMMO

Still looking forward to Sunday’s corned beef hash and egg breakfast!

Counter Surfing 101 – Author’s Note

I’ve said it before, that dog has mad skills.

For those that asked, no she did not get sick.  She is known as the dog with the cast iron stomach.

When she first came to live with our pack she had a sensitive type stomach, but once she got used to having two squares a day with lots of treats and a snack, there isn’t much that upsets her stomach.

Of course, there are exceptions.

One time she ate 3/4 pound of butter, wrappers and all.  I thought she’d be hurling or shitting like a goose, but no.

She did drink a lot of water and I watched her like a hawk the entire day.  Finally after a few hours she vomited the tiniest bit of foam.

No, the time she really hurled was after she’d cleaned up a good portion of the yard.

Talk about vile.

She cleared the house on that one.

Tasty Cubes – Update

The dogs love the little frozen bits of whatever they’re getting but I won’t be buying any more Dorot spices. I did not realize that these little cubes contain soybean oil.

Remember the post where I told you I’d share the healthy changes we were making both in the dogs and our lifestyle?  Well one of the biggest things I’m trying to avoid is Genetically Modified Organisms a.k.a. GMO’s.

Unfortunately soy makes the list of the top 10 genetically modified foods.

Many thanks to Donna, from Donna and the Dogs to alerting me to this.

GMO’s are very, very bad.  You can read more about them as well as find non-GMO brands here.

More to come.

Lessons of Love – Author’s Note

I’m so happy that I can teach my grandchildren to be respectful of animals.  I feel it is my responsibility as a dog owner and animal advocate to educate whenever possible.  As you know, some adults are a real hard sell, but I’m a firm believer that the youth of today will make the change I want to see for animals.

One of my favorite pictures with my grandson and the dogs.

One of my favorite pictures with my grandson and the dogs.

And I’m starting in my own backyard.

Let Me Take You Down…To Funky Town – Update

Thank you for all your kind words, I really appreciate the support.  Part of it is I sometimes feel like I don’t know what to write about and I think on those days, I’m going to have to give myself permission to skip a post, or throw out a photo.

Every day doesn’t have to be a chapter of a book, right?

That’s it for me!  I hope you have a great weekend.  Many, many thanks to our friends at 2 Brown Dawgs for co-hosting the Follow-Up Friday blog hop,
