Follow – Up Friday, April 12, 2013

April 12, 2013 By Jodi

Here we are, another week gone and time for Follow-Up Friday.  This week my co-hostess is a newbie. 🙂  That’s right, but I’m sure she’s not new to you!

Quite frankly I’m not sure how this lady does it.  She writes a bang up blog, stays on top of current animal legislation in Missouri, share adoptable dogs, recently added the cutest little black lab to her pack, and in addition to all of these thing, she creates the most beautiful jewelry and has planned a month-long celebration for her dog Jeffie’s birthday.

If you guessed Sue from The Talking Dog Blog, give yourself a gold star!  Welcome Sue and thank you for joining me today and sharing in hostessing duties.

This is the Follow-Up Friday Blog Hop, the hop that let’s you wrap up your week and leads you right into the weekend!

I’m Not Mad at You, I’m Mad at Me

Last year when Delilah ran off I reconciled my mind to the possibility that she might always have to be on leash, yet I continue to work her and her recall in the hope that someday she’ll get it.  And who knows, maybe some day she will, but I don’t expect it to be soon.

2 Brown Dawgs said, “You need one of those GPS collars” – I know, Hubby was telling me about them and he said, “But they’re $8 per month.” And I said, “But $8 for piece of mind, it’s well worth it!”

Gizmo said, “Only hope I can offer is that as he got older (like 5) he stopped his wandering” – Um…Giz? She turned seven in December. 🙁

Black and White Sunday

I wasn’t sure how I was going to like Black and White Sunday but I loved it!  Here’s the picture I ran.

Black and White Sunday 4-7-13 And here’s the original photo.

Porch-1

Sue asked, “Is that Sampson at the top of the steps?”  Yes, that is Sampson, he loved that porch!

Emma asked, “Is that your house?” No Emma, sadly it is not.  It belongs to my daughter’s in-laws, and we were lucky enough to stay there for a week when they were renting it out.

Mel asked, “Is he waiting for you to put the camera down?” No, actually I think he was wondering why I was off the porch and he wasn’t! 🙂

2 Brown Dawgs, “Are those palm trees?” Yes indeed.

Misty Shores, “I find it amazing how some photos look so much better in black and white than color.”  I agree, I like this so much in black and white, I’m thinking of printing it off and framing it.

Sugar, “LOVE the railing, what’s the color?” The railing is plain white, but it really stands out, no?

Dogs N Pawz, “Is that Sampson guarding the house?”  It is Sampson, but I don’t think he was guarding.

Sue, “Where are you???” This my friend is the beautiful Emerald Isle, North Carolina.

My Dog Likes Wood

Doggy’s Style, “May I compliment your eyes?” Yes you can.  Thank you Leo. 🙂

What Would You Do For Your Pet?

Most of us agreed, we’d jump in after our pets.  I never let my dogs get that far away from me near water, so I never really thought about it.  Having now thought about it, I would try to remain calm and talk to them trying to encourage them to swim to a safe spot.  Knowing myself though, I’d panic and go right in after them.

Emma said, “First, you are using wordpress, so when you insert a link always check the open link in a new window box that way when the reader closes that linked page they still have your page.”  Thank you Emma, I appreciate the tip, I did not know that but going forward, I will always have the link open in a new window.

Jackie asked, “can you imagine standing and watching your pup be swept away?” No, I absolutely could not.

2 Brown Dawgs shared a really interesting story.

I read it, I get it but I know me, my heart rules and I would die trying to save them.

Wellness Wednesday Fleas and Ticks

Carol asked, “I like the idea of spraying before we go walking..but do you know if it is ok to use with topical treatments???”  No Carol, I don’t. Any of my vet tech friends know the answer to that?

Barb said, “When you have perfected your own spray, I would be very interested in your recipe if you care to share.  Absolutely Barb!

Married with Dawgs said, “I use apple cider vinegar, regular grooming & baths and a natural spray with a variety of essential oils. It’s been working like a charm for almost 2 years.”  I’d like to know more about the ACV and what spray you are using.

Dawn asked, “how often do you do a Lyme disease test to check your dogs?” That’s a great question Dawn and would you believe I don’t know?  I have to check with my vet and see if they test that when they do bloodwork, if they don’t you can bet they will going forward!

Snoopy asked, “Have you ever tried the discs that are supposed to work for 2 years, Mum’s read about them before, but thought maybe they were too good to be true?”  No Snoopy, I have never heard of the discs.  Tell me more. 🙂

This ‘N That Thursday

Sue asked, “And the toy has survived Delilah, you say?”  Yes the toy did survive, but once she had flattened the bottle I took it away, so who knows if eventually she would have managed to get it open.

Whew!  This edition of Follow-Up Friday is a wrap!  Thanks again to Sue at Talking Dogs for co-hosting with me, please be sure to stop over to her blog and enter Jeffie’s birthday photo contest.

What Would You Do For Your Pet?

April 9, 2013 By Jodi

I had a totally different post planned for today and then I came upon this article on Yahoo, and the title caught my eye, Experts: Don’t attempt to save swept-away pets.

You can read the article for yourself AFTER you finish this post (apparently I have to be concerned with something called bouncing.)

I’ll give you the down and dirty.  Apparently five people have died in California in the last five months trying to rescue a dog being swept away.

The article says that most dogs are better swimmers than humans and by using their fight or flight instincts will work with the currents and find their way to shore.  Of course it might be a bit farther away than where they started so microchips and collar tags are highly recommended.

We all know that certain dogs are better in the water than others.  Labradors, German Shepards and Pit Bulls are designed for swimming. Their strong bodies, heads that stay above water, thick/and or waterproof coats not to mention the four feet vs two for humans, (with some of them being webbed) give them the advantage over two footers who can experience hypothermia due to the cold ocean water.

Animals have far better stamina than most humans and are capable of keeping themselves alive in the water by remaining calm and focusing on the task at hand vs humans who tend to panic and become confused.

And what if your pet manages to stay alive, turning up two or three miles down shore and you have died, where does that leave him/her?

Logistically this all makes sense to me, but the reality of seeing your dog struggling and being swept away is far different.  I can’t imagine the guilt I’d feel standing helplessly by.   And God knows I have enough guilt I carry right now.

Sampson-1

How could I let either one of those sweet faces just drift away without trying to help?  What do you think?  What would YOU do?

Co-Hosted Follow-Up Friday – April 12, 2012

April 5, 2013 By Jodi

Welcome to Co-Hosted Follow-Up Friday, the blog hop that let’s you wrap up your week and leads you right into the weekend.

My co-hostess this week apparently likes punishment.  Not only is her female, Storm expecting puppies in less than two weeks, she also recently started the This ‘N That Thursday blog hop and today she’s back to help me out.

Please give a warm Heart Like a Dog welcome to our friends at the 2 Brown Dawgs blog.  (Sorry, I’ve always wanted to type that.)

The thing I love about Follow-up Friday is the flexibility, so since I’m struggling to respond to comments, I’m going to try answering some of them here, along with my follow-up.

Savvy?

 Emergency Recalls…WHAT?

It always makes me feel better to find that other people are doing similar things that I am (talking to your dogs like they KNOW what you’re saying.)

Thanks to Tales and Tails who said “Jen over at Never Say Never Greyhounds did a great post a while back about teaching recalls, and she does have an emergency, can never be ignored recall. She teaches it with grilled steak, if I remember right, and by golly, I’d recall for her every time, too! I think it’s definitely worth your time and effort to teach it and work on it.”

I plan on bookmarking this and checking it out when I have a few minutes.

I also started watching Patricia McConnell’s “Lassie Come!” video, which is also on my list to finish.

Acd6pack asked, “Do you dehydrate the turkey hearts yourself?”

No, I’m lazy when it comes to making treats for the dogs, although Hubby and I have been talking about purchasing a dehydrator and once I have one, I intend on working on dehydrating certain things and hearts will probably be one of them.

My question for you is, how do you recall a deaf dog that is off-leash?

Happy Easter

Al asked, “How many takes?”

Actually I took 11 photos and only one of them was a real ‘blooper’ which I ended up using anyway.

AnimalCouriers asked, “are we seeing a little sun there?”

Yes, yes you were.  We’ve actually had a couple of spring like days.  It gives hope to the soul.

Delilah the Retriever and Oz the Terrier

Jan said, “Not many rhyme with Poodle or Chihuahua though.”

Oh yeah? ;-0

The lady named Jan had chihuahuas
They made her laugh like he he and hah, hah, hah’s
She also had poodles
who liked to eat noodles
then needed their thirst quenched with some wa wa’s.

Wordless Wednesday

Last week Caren said, “Liked your quote but was hoping you would post some of the quotes that you received…darn!  Next Time.”

So here is mine:

100_1045_2 WTF?  I didn’t know he was so delicate!

As always I loved all your comments.  Some of my favorites were:

Caren – “I can’t believe I ate the WHOLE thing!”

JoAnn – “Look mom no body!”

Houndstooth – “The thing just EXPLODED! I’m as shocked as you are!”

Georgia Little Pea – WHAT are my legs doing there?!

This ‘N That Thursday

Julie said, “that sweet face at the beginning of the video melts my heart.”

It melts mine too my friend. 🙂

Emma said, “Mom understands that poor woman all too well. She is always telling me about how my sister Katie would take off on her and not let herself get caught. One time she even ran out into a kids soccer game and was after the ball, they had to stop the whole game and mom still couldn’t catch Katie…now she is older and a bit more sensible but mom knows that it just happens and there is nothing you can do. Katie just wanted to play as well, so there was no physical harm ever done.”

I imagine that made mom very anxious Emma, I’m glad you’re such a good girl and stay close to your mom.

That’s a wrap for this edition of Follow-Up Friday, hosted by 2 Brown Dawgs and Heart Like a Dog.  Please check out our fellow hoppers.  This is the co-hosted Follow-Up Friday Blog Hop
