We Have Lift

October 21, 2018 By Jodi

When Sampson was a puppy, sometimes he would squat to pee. Our trainer told us if he didn’t lift his leg by the time he was a year old, he probably never would. She also said, he had to have a male dog to show him how to lift his leg.

He squatted for probably the first two years of his life. I’m not sure why it bothered me so much, watching him squat, but I can’t tell you how proud I was the day he actually lifted his leg and peed on something.

Because he has bad knees, he still squats at times. Actually, it’s not so much a squat as it is a little dip of his hips. And now, it doesn’t bother me at all.

I was reminded of this story, yesterday morning when Delilah lifted her leg to pee on a telephone pole.

I had never seen a female dog lift, and Delilah didn’t start lifting until we started walking in the woods. When she first started doing it, I tried like hell to get a photo of it. I mean, really, how often do you see a female dog lifting her leg?

Eventually, I got the photo.

If you look closely, you can see the urine stream, but just in case, I used the arrow to point it out to you You’re welcome.

Now when Delilah ‘lifts’ she doesn’t raise her leg the same way a male dog does, it’s more like she rests her foot on the object she’s aiming for.

No matter how she does it, it makes me smile to see it and think about it.

What did your pet do to make you smile this week?

You make me smile (or laugh,) the sweet, funny, loving things my dogs do that make me laugh or smile.

Sampson, Delilah and Beau

October 14, 2018 By Jodi

My youngest daughter is currently living in Germany. Thursday morning I receive a message from her, her Bulldog, Beau was in surgery for an obstruction.

I’m not going to tell my story, and make you wait. Beau did fine with the surgery. They were able to remove the piece of toy my daughter didn’t even know he swallowed, and he is on his way to feeling better.

Baby Beau, maybe three or four months old.

As for the story….My daughter came home one year for Christmas, and she brought her new Bulldog puppy, Beau. Sampson and Delilah did not like Beau. In their defense, they have each been attacked at least three different times by the Bulldogs across the street, so they have a prejudice towards Bulldogs.

So she brought Beau home and we managed the dogs. As I said, the dogs HATED Beau. In fact, the dogs were so NASTY to Beau, I wrote an entire post about it. (You can read that HERE.)

Please Dog, make it go away. I promise I’ll be a good boy.

The photo made me think of a dog in prayer, but truthfully, he was probably just trying to stay away from Beau.

Sampson and Delilah have seen Beau a few times, in fact, my daughter stayed with us for a bit. This time Sampson was better, but Delilah and Beau always seemed to be at loggerheads. In fact, they actually physically fought a couple of times, and that was scary. So now, we just keep them away from each other. I mean, I don’t like every single person I meet, why should my dog like every single dog?

It made me smile to look back on this photo of Sampson in ‘prayer.’

What did your pet do that made you smile this week?

P.S. Today is the Dog Daddy’s birthday and Sampson and Delilah wish him a happy day!

You Make Me Smile – Pet Photos

October 7, 2018 By Jodi

As I mentioned last week, I’ve been doing “You Make Me Laugh” or “You Make Me Smile” posts for at least three years.

That’s a lot of smiles and laughs. I still smile and laugh every day with these guys. Whether it’s Sampson’s smile when I come home from work, or Delilah’s shoving her head between my legs before I leave for work, there is ALWAYS something to laugh or smile about with these two.

I don’t want to say the dogs are boring now, but they are both seniors and those days of Sampson shoving his head in a hole and digging like crazy

Then coming up covered in dirt with a big smile on his face

Or Delilah climbing into our trainer’s car trunk looking for goodies

Just a little bit further, we can’t take the chance of missing something.

Happens less and less frequently.

So yesterday I started going through photos to see if something would hit a cord with me, and I thought, I wonder what the first dog photo I shared was?

Well, this may come as a surprise to some of you, but when I first started blogging 1) I didn’t know what I was going to blog about 2) I didn’t decide to blog about my dogs until about three or four months in and 3) I didn’t add photos to any of my posts.

I know, right?

Then I got bored of looking at blog posts, so I went to the media, and the very first dog photo I shared was this one.

T-Shirt Design

Do you know Sampson?

When I was going to my very first writing conference, I wanted to wear a shirt promoting Sampson, and this is the photo I put on that shirt.

It’s one of my favorites, and looking at it, always makes me smile.

What made you smile this week?
