Tuesday Just Got Tasty at Our House

August 27, 2013 By Jodi

Delilah here, taking control of the blog to share some exciting news.

Are you ready?

The Mama actually baked for us.  I know, shocking right?

Don’t get me wrong, the Mama takes very good care of us.  She feeds us great food, takes us for walks, monitors our physical condition, and loves us beyond reason.  But there’s one thing she doesn’t do and that is make treats for us.  At least not like some moms do and you know who you are and who I’m talking about and let me just say, there are some lucky dogs out there.

Not that I’m complaining about the Mama because the treats she does feed us are good quality, they’re just not homemade.

But that all changed on Sunday.  The Mama actually turned on the oven.  Go figure, I was just as surprised as the next dog.  Granted, it wasn’t her recipe and she didn’t do any fancy mixing or kneading but it sure was tasty.

The Mama made a beef heart!  I know, you could have knocked me over with a tail wag!

Word of caution, these photos aren’t for the faint of heart.  Get it?  I made a funny!!

Here’s what she did.

First she set the oven to 350 degrees and added the defrosted beef heart to the baking dish, sprinkling it well with garlic powder.

Beef Heart

I swear I’d eat it just like this, but the Mama said, “NO Delilah!”

She covered it with foil and put it in the oven for about an hour and a half.  The smell of beef cooking filled the house, so when Daddy came home he said, “Something smells good.”

The Mama offered him a piece but he said “No.”  (I think she should have just stuck it on his plate, he’d have never known the difference.)

The cooked beef heart.

The cooked beef heart.

Sampson and I waited patiently in the kitchen while she sliced it up.

Sampson and I waited patiently in the kitchen while she sliced it up.

After she sliced it up, she put it a bowl so she could take a picture. What the woof?

After she sliced it up, she put it a bowl so she could take a picture.

What the woof Mama, we’re waiting patiently right here!!

Finally it was our turn to get some noms.

Delilah Nom

Why thank you, I don’t mind if I do!

Sampson Nom

Thank you Mama, may I have another?

Once the Mama had finished cutting it up, taken some photos and given us each a few bites, she emptied the bowl into a freezer bag and stuck it in the freezer.  Naturally she labled it with our names on it, just so Daddy doesn’t go in there and accidentally grub down on our noms.

The Mama said if all treats were that easy to make, she’d make them all the time.  She also said something else like, if you don’t like what I feed you for treats go live with Koly’s mom.

I’m pretty sure she was just joking about that, but I’ll have to go love on her for a few minutes just to make sure.

Yes it’s true folks, Tuesday just got tastier in our house!

Many thanks to our awesome hosts Kol’s Notes and Sugar the Golden Retriever for this Tasty Blog Hop.

It’s a Piece of Fruit

August 13, 2013 By Jodi

When I found out today was the two-year anniversary for the Tasty Tuesday blog hop I wanted to participate.  I had the option of baking something, sharing a frozen treat or showing what my dog would do for fruit.

Of course we all know I have the best intentions when it comes to making treats for my dogs but I rarely do.  When I’m going in the kitchen to bake it’s generally for myself.  I know what a selfish bitch.

I don’t do a lot of new frozen treats and when I do, I usually share them on the hop.

That left me with showing what my dog would do for a piece of fruit.  I chose Delilah to represent.

Delilah is food motivated.  No secret there.  In fact she’s so food motivated it is sometimes difficult to work with her, she’s so damn enthusiastic.  One of the first times I used the clicker she was so focused on the food in my hand she couldn’t do anything.  I asked a trainer how to get her to focus on something other than the food.  She said use a food with a lesser value.  I didn’t have the heart to tell her I was using a canned green bean.

It’s a bountiful fruit time in the northeast, yet I had no fresh fruit available, so I turned to my freezer.

We started off with a bowl of frozen pineapple.

We started off with a bowl of frozen pineapple.

I will sit for a frozen piece of pineapple. Yes I will.

Will I sit for a frozen piece of pineapple? Yes I will.

I will down for a frozen piece of pineapple. Yes I will.

Will I down for a frozen piece of pineapple? Yes I will.

I will sit pretty for a piece of frozen pineapple. Yes I will.

Will I sit pretty for a piece of frozen pineapple? Yes I will.

I will wiggle on my back for a piece of frozen pineapple. Yes I will.

Will I wiggle on my back for a piece of frozen pineapple? Yes I will.

They say a picture is worth 1,000 words, but it certainly cannot convey Delilah’s enthusiasm for this little bowl of pineapple in my hands.

Would you like to see what else I'll do for a piece of frozen pineapple Mama?

Would you like to see what else I’ll do for a piece of frozen pineapple Mama?  Yes I would Delilah.

So we shot a little video.  Except I transferred it to the Mac and deleted it from the camera in the process.  And I couldn’t upload the video to You Tube.

For the record, I’m pissed off.  At You Tube.  And myself.  But after talking with my IT person at work, I have hopes that I can figure it out, but not until I’m home sitting in front of the Mac.

I’m sorry.  I screwed up and you got screwed out of a cute video.  With any luck, I will have it available tonight and I will update this post and include the video in This ‘N That Thursday as well as Follow-Up Friday.

Keep your fingers crossed.

Congratulations to Jodi Chick and her awesome blog, Kol’s Notes and her fantastic co-host Sugar the Golden Retriever for sharing and celebrating Tasty Tuesday’s for two years!   We look forward to sharing many more with you.

UPDATE:  Yes!  I figured it out.  Without further ado, here is proof of what Delilah will do for a piece of frozen pineapple.

Delilah Defeated

July 9, 2013 By Jodi

Last week Sampson had to go to the vet to have his lump checked.  Typically we bring both dogs. We always joke it’s for moral support, but truthfully we hate leaving one home while the other one goes out.

Hubby couldn’t go with us, or meet us there so I had no choice.  I had to leave Delilah home.

Alone.

This may come as a surprise to you, but Delilah can get a little pissy if you come home and leave right away.  People will tell you that dogs don’t do things out of spite.

To that I say, you haven’t met Delilah.

I decided it would just be easier to crate her, but I wanted to make sure she had a nice treat to make her stay in the crate a bit more comfortable.

Sampson’s appointment was at 4:40, so we had to leave the house about 4:20  I showed Delilah the treat and she jumped happily beside me as we made our way to the crate.

Leave me with my Kong.

We were gone about an hour and twenty minutes.  When she came out of the crate she dropped the treat and some goodies fell out.

WHAT?

This is the dog that eats her frozen bone, then takes Sampson’s and cleans it up.

What was this magic treat?

A five-layer Kong.

Here’s what I did.  I took a large Kong and put about a tablespoon of canned pumpkin in the bottom making sure to seal the small hole.  I stuck that in the freezer the night before.

The next morning I added a layer of pineapple chunks, then a layer of Vanana yogurt, a layer of wild blueberries and I topped it off with another layer of pumpkin.  I put it in the freezer, for about 8 to 9 hours.

It looks like caviar but trust me, it's blueberries.

It looks like caviar but trust me, it’s blueberries. Who the hell can afford caviar?

It’s a simple recipe, but it kept the Destroyer busy for over an hour.

Have you found any treats that really occupy your dog?  Do you have a Destroyer at home?

This is Tasty Tuesday hosted by Kol’s Notes and Sugar the Golden Retriever.
