Rocky’s Rollers Rock Our World #Sponsored

October 13, 2015 By Jodi

This post is sponsored by Jones Natural Chews. I am being compensated for helping spread the word about Jones Natural Chews but Heart Like a Dog only shares information we feel is relevant to our readers. Jones Natural Chews is not responsible for the content of this article.

Due to some food allergies, I’m a gluten-free eater. Because I’m super conscious of what I put in MY mouth, I try very hard to monitor what goes in Sampson and Delilah’s mouths as well. (FYI, I don’t always do so well with the gutter snuffer.)

Whenever possible I look for grain free treats made in the US and produced by small companies. I want to support the little guy as opposed to some big corporation.

Which is why Jones Natural Chews fits so well into our lifestyle. Jones is a small, family run business that’s been in the meat business for over 150 years. About 20 years ago, Jones began making dog treats. In those 20 years, they’ve had two (yes, only two) recalls. Manufactured in their plant in Rockford, Illinois, in small batches Jones treats are all natural. Besides being grain free, most of Jones treats are three ingredients or less.

I don’t know about you, but I can’t stand reading a paragraph of ingredients. I like it simple and easy with words I can pronounce.

Rocky’s Rollers are one of Jones newest treats. They come in three flavors, Lamb, Beef and Chicken. These treats happen to have more than three ingredients. To give you an example let’s look at the lamb flavored.

Lamb, lamb lung, rye flour, glycerin, brown sugar, salt, liquid smoke, flavoring, natural mixed tocopherals (preservative), and rosemary all packed in a collagen casing.

A few weeks ago, we got a box in the mail. I was expecting some supplements so I just set the box down. But Delilah knew the box was not supplements.

Delilah "the nose" Stone said, "This ain't no supplement. My nose knows Jones."

Delilah “the nose” Stone said, “This ain’t no supplement. My nose knows Jones.”

Once we got the box open we discovered we’d received one package of each!

While I was snapping pictures, Delilah thought she’d slip one over on me.

Dog gone, I wish I had opposable thumbs!

Once the dogs had thoroughly inspected the packages, I opened one up.

You guys…these treats look just like sausages.

Looks just like sausage links!

These are BIG treats.  To give you an idea, I placed one next to a butter knife.

The roller is almost as large as a butter knife.

You can break them up into smaller pieces, but for training purposes I like them really small, so I use my kitchen snips.

Snip snip. Not what you think.

Snip snip. (Get your mind out of the gutter!)

Once we had some of the pictures out of the way, it was time to see what the dogs thought.

Delilah kept inching closer until she was practically on my lap. I couldn't hand these out fast enough.

The next night we tried a different flavor. This was the beef flavored, I’m pretty sure you can see how much Delilah loved them.

Shark week is in July, not October!

Sampson is a bit gentler, but he was still anxious to get his share of Jones’ Rocky Rollers.

More Jones' sausages Mom, PLEASE!!

More Jones’ sausages Mom, PLEASE!!

The Jones’ Rocky Rollers were a big hit in our house. We’ve been using the Rocky Rollers when the dogs go to their places while we eat dinner. I cut them into quarters and the dogs each get two, so they are each actually getting half.

I love them because they are made in the USA, owned and operated by a family that’s been in the business for a very long time and takes pride and care in the product they make, and the ingredient base is limited.

One other thing I love about Jones, is they support Noah’s Ark Sanctuaries as well as their local homeless shelters and food banks.

Are you a fan of Jones? How would you like to try some Rocky’s Rollers for your dog(s)? Enter to win a package of Rocky’s Rollers by answering this question in the comments. What’s your favorite thing about Rocky’s Rollers?

Three lucky commenters will win a package of Rocky’s Rollers. Flavors are at the discretion of the sponsor. Giveaway is open until October 27th at midnight (eastern standard time). Winners will be chosen by random.org and announced October 29th.

Refreshing Frozen Treats

July 29, 2014 By Jodi

Sampson and Delilah get a snack at night.  For a while it was a white bone that I filled with pumpkin and Kefir.  But since Delilah is a voracious chewer and broke her tooth, I’ve been trying to steer her away from the bones, so we switched back to the Kong.

Delilah also gets a lovely treat when Sampson has therapy.  It makes staying home alone bearable for her.

Last week SlimDoggy Kate was looking for an easy treat she could make for SlimDoggy Jack and SlimDoggy Maggie to celebrate their Gotcha Day.  I shared this recipe with her and thought I’d share it here with you as well.

Here’s what you’ll need

Bowl or container of your choosing

Canned or freshly stewed pumpkin

Sliced peaches, bananas, blueberries or the fruit of your choice

Kefir

Here’s how I did it.

Put a layer of pumpkin in the bottom of your container

Lay the pieces of fruit on top

Frozen-Treats-For-Dogs

Pour the Kefir in making a design of your choosing

Frozen-treats-for-dogs

Freeze for at least two hours

Remove treat from container and serve.

What I love about this it’s quick, easy and healthy and very versatile.  You can customize this treat to include the fruits that your dog loves.  In fact, I have a very special one in the freezer right now.  Which I will share with you tomorrow, when we celebrate a certain someone’s birthday.

Some words of advice.

Choose your container carefully.  I chose clear plastic container not thinking about how the treat would come out.

Plastic

Epic fail.

If you have a hoover dog like I do, this treat won’t last long.

Frozen-Dog-Treats

Delilah had the treat finished before Sampson and I even made it out the door.

Do you make treats for your dogs?

Treats I Can Trust

July 1, 2014 By Jodi

This post is sponsored by Jones Natural Chews.  While I have been compensated with product for this post, Heart Like a Dog only shares products and services we feel are of value to our readers and would never promote something we didn’t use ourselves.

Today we are helping our friend Flea celebrate her second blogiversary.  For those of you who don’t know Flea (I’m shocked, really I am) she is the official blogger for Jones Natural Chews.  Flea is funny and smart, she’s so good at integrating Jones into her post, that you actually forget she’s blogging for Jones.

I met Flea last year when I attended BlogPaws in D.C.  Over the course of the past year, we’ve developed a friendship so when she asked me to help celebrate her Blogiversary with a Jones Natural Chew giveaway, I was totally thrilled.

Turns out my dogs are too.

I picked up the delivery from the front steps and set it on my interior stairs when I got home from work.  I hitched Delilah up for her walk and watched her head whip around as we walked past the package on the stairs.  Siriusly, I thought for a minute there she would give up her walk for the box.  She forgot all about that little indiscretion when I placed the box on the floor.

Holy woof, something smells amazing in here. Why did they put so much tape on there?

Holy woof, something smells amazing. Why did they put so much tape on there?

She tried opening it, but she was too slow, so I helped her out.

Siriusly, you want me to wait? What the woof is wrong with you?

Siriusly, you want me to wait? What the woof is wrong with you?

She tried a different tactic, but I insisted we do a thorough review.

Maybe there's no tape on this.

Who staples treats?  What the woof?

Today we are reviewing Jones Natural Chews Beef Tracheas and Jones Natural Chews Lamb Lung Puffs and at the end we’re going to tell you how you can win a package of lamb lung puffs or beef tracheas for your pet.

We started out with the beef tracheas.  Guess what’s in them?

Beef trachea, that’s it!  I love a treat that isn’t chock full of stuff I can’t pronounce.  (I really can pronounce trachea, I promise.)

Sampson was first.  He’s such a good boy, I actually set the treat down and made him wait while I took a picture, but he looked so sad, I didn’t have the heart to post it.

Oh my, this is tasty. What did you call it?

Jones beef trachea you say?  Nom, nom.

Apparently it was so good, he felt the need to make sure there was nothing left on the carpet.

Yes it's true, I licked the carpet.

Yes it’s true, I licked the carpet.

I had to place the treats quite some distance from Delilah, she’s fast that one.

Well now you're just woofing with me. You're cruel Mama, very cruel.

Well now you’re just woofing with me. You’re cruel Mama, very cruel.

I shall simply say, Delilah enjoyed the treat as well, if she in fact tasted it on it’s way down.

Sampson and Delilah give the beef trachea from Jones, a four paws up.

We moved to the lamb lungs.  Guess what’s in them?

Lamb Lung!  I know, I feel like we hit the lottery and so do Sampson and Delilah!

The first thing I noticed was how LARGE they were.  Folks, these were hanging out of my treat bag.  Don’t believe me?  Look.

That's a damn quarter! See how small it is compared to the treat?

That’s a damn quarter! See how small it is compared to the treat?

Again we went with the easy dog first.  (I wanted to make sure I still had fingers to operate the camera.)

Nom, nom. This is way bigger and better then those stingy pieces you give us Mama.

Nom, nom. This is way bigger and better then those stingy pieces you give us Mama.

Yes it’s true.  I use the lamb lungs for my recall treats and I break them into bits. I know, I’m a bad Mama.

Then it was Jaw’s turn.  What?  You think I’m kidding?

You gotta be quicker than that Mama. Grass don't grow under these feet.

You gotta be quicker than that Mama. Grass don’t grow under these feet.

Dog’s so damn fast the camera couldn’t capture it.

Sampson and Delilah give the Jones Natural Chews lamb lung puffs another four paws up.

In honor of Flea’s Blogiversary I was working on a little ditty.  I was trying to tie it in with Delilah’s broken tooth, but I could only get so far.  Sing it to the tune of Friends in Low Places by Garth Brooks.

Blame it all on my tooth, the dang thing went poof and ruined my chewing affair,
The vet seemed to know and to my mama did show, I was hoping she just wouldn’t care
But I saw the surprise and the fear in her eyes
When the vet said this tooth has to go
I said hold it right there, this just isn’t fair
There’s something I want you to know
I’ve got friends at Jones Che-ews, who make treats so good they’re better than booze.

I told you I could only get so far.

I also told you there was also a chance for you to win the treat of your choice, so here goes.  Leave me a comment and tell me how you think I could wrap up the end of that song.

I’m just kidding!!  Siriusly, tell me in the comments which treat your dog would like.  The winner will be determined by random.org, contest will remain open until midnight (EST) July 7th and winner will be announced Thursday, July 10th.

I want to thank my friend Flea for the privilege of helping her celebrate her 2nd Blogiversary.  It’s a real honor, I enjoy your blog immensely and I treasure your friendship.  For those of you who don’t know Flea, you can find Flea in all her hilarity HERE.
