Where We Are – Barks and Bytes

February 25, 2016 By Jodi

On January 19th at an exam to remove a dead tooth, our vet discovered that Sampson had a heart murmur and an irregular heartbeat. Subsequent X-rays and Ultrasounds could not determine the cause of the irregular heartbeat, but they did find a nodule/mass on one of his adrenal glands. We were told the nodule/mass could be benign or something sinister. The recommendation was to recheck the adrenal in 1 to 2 months.

To compound the situation, a week later Sampson did a partial tear on his ‘good’ leg. I say, ‘good’ because to me it seemed like he never really walked well after that ACL surgery. In fact, I’m not entirely convinced his poor recovery from surgery didn’t aid in the partial tearing in the other leg, but I’m not a vet. Many, many dogs have ACL tears and surgery for repairs and recover well. Sampson just wasn’t one of them.

We did a lot of soul searching about how we were going to treat Sampson. The two major issues for us were the nodule/mass on the adrenal and the ACL tear.

Of course the heart issues are concerning, but the murmur is faint and the irregularity in the heartbeat is mild, so our focus turned to the other issues.

We decided not to do surgery on the ACL. First, we aren’t even sure they can DO surgery because of the irregular heartbeat and second, based on his experience with the first ACL surgery, well it’s just not something we want to put him through again.

We have a good plan in place to treat it conservatively. Some traditional medications, along with some supplements, acupuncture, short slow walks and physical therapy.

We made our decision based on his age, his previous experience with surgery and we also considered what was going on with that adrenal.

Speaking of the adrenal…

The treatment for a malignant mass on the adrenal is to remove it. From what my vet said, the only way to tell if it is cancerous is to remove it.

Hubby and I decided we didn’t want to put Sampson through abdominal surgery at his age, especially if it wasn’t going to significantly extend his life. Our thought process is, if this is the beginning of the end for Sampson, we don’t want his days to be filled with tests, treatments, missed meals and days away from home. We want his time left with us to be spent keeping his life as normal as possible.

Golden Lab

Missed meals and tests? That doesn’t sound appealing to me.

After many, many telephone consultations with the team of veterinarians at our clinic, we rescheduled his ultrasound for yesterday.

I’m going to tell you something here and some of you may laugh, and that’s okay. I’ve said it before, we are all on our own journey and we all have our own beliefs. If you don’t agree with mine, I’m okay with that.

So here it is.

I prayed over Sampson. I placed one hand on his stomach and I had one hand open and raised and I prayed for healing. While I was doing, I heard very clearly in my mind, “The adrenal is healed.” I said thank you and considered it a done deal.

I told the vet techs this story yesterday and told them they were going to be surprised when they saw the results of the ultrasound.

When I spoke to our vet yesterday afternoon she told me the nodule/mass hadn’t changed, and that the ultrasoundographer didn’t find anything alarming on the ultrasound.

I believe I pounded the roof of my car and said, “Yes, yes! I knew it.”

Then she told me, the next thing would be a blood test that could check for cancer. I then told her what Hubby and I had decided and that I didn’t think we’d be doing that test.

Yes, it might be the best $100 we ever spent if it ruled out cancer, but if it didn’t, I know I’d obsess over it and I’d be stressed, which in turn would make Sampson stressed, and that’s not beneficial to anyone, especially if we are not going to treat it anyway. Besides, you know if you dig long and far enough, you’re bound to find something!

I told her if that opinion changed after I talked to the Hubs, I’d let her know.

I talked to Hubby and we are both in agreement. We will not be pursuing the adrenal.

So that’s where we’re at. We will be working on helping Sampson heal his ACL tear conservatively and not be worrying about that adrenal gland.

Disclaimer:  I am not a veterinarian, the decisions we have made are made after much soul searching, and consultations with our Vet team. If you are facing decisions regarding your pet, you should consult your own Veterinarian.

All that being said, I have stayed at the Holiday Inn a number of times and can highly recommend them.

Finding the Beauty in Nature

February 23, 2016 By Jodi

When I first changed our morning walk to 5:45, I admit I really didn’t care for it, especially during the winter months. I mean, who likes getting out of a nice warm bed, when it’s dark and cold?

But I’ve really learned to love these early morning walks, particularly now as sunrise begins to arrive earlier and I’m walking the dogs separately.

Sampson’s walk is the first walk and during this time, I still get to see the inky blue/black of the night sky sprinkled with stars, along with the beauty of the setting moon.

The moon setting on Sampson's walk yesterday morning.

After Sampson’s walk I switch him out for Delilah. And that’s when I get to see the beauty of the sun rising.

A little beauty to start the day.

A little beauty to start the day.

Sunday I was up earlier than usual and decided to walk the dogs. Because the weather has been so mild recently, I was treated to a little music on our walk.

I’m not really a ‘bird’ person, I mean I can identify certain birds…robins, blue jays, chickadees, humming birds and of course this guy.

Thank you for the sweet song buddy.

Thank you for the sweet song buddy.

Typically birds fly away from us, but this guy hung in there long enough for me to snap a photo.

Finding the beauty in nature makes for a great start to my day.

Speaking of beautiful things…

I’d like to send a giant thank you out to our friend JoAnn at Sand Spring Chesapeakes. A couple of weeks ago she had a little contest to guess the number and sex of the puppies Miss Glory was going to have. I was one of two people who guessed right! (6 girls and 3 boys). The prize was supposed to be a set of her fabulous, hand-made paracord leash and collar. I told her what color I wanted and promptly forgot to measure Sampson for the collar.

Instead of harassing me and delaying the prize, sweet, sweet Jo-Ann sent me the leash and swapped out the collar for a bag of Beet Treats. (These treats meet all my requirements in a treat! JoAnn, you know me SO well.) When I nipped over to her blog yesterday, I discovered why the bag was opened and treats lose in the envelope. Yup, it was G-Man. I guess Delilah didn’t want to be outdone by the G-Man so while Sampson and I were out walking, she chewed up a bit of the card and envelope that came with the prezzies.

The leash is fantastic, I used it yesterday on Sampson’s afternoon walk. Doesn’t it match his harness beautifully? It’s light-weight, thin and a wee bit stretchy. Perfect for coiling it up in your pocket on a nice slow walk.

What's black and gold and red all over? No, that doesn't work. ;-)

Me: What’s black and gold and red all over? Sampson: That doesn’t work here Mama.

I didn’t realize the camera was on the ‘Magic’ setting, but I like the way this photo turned out. Isn’t it beautiful? 😉

Where do you find your beauty?

Pandora’s Box – Barks and Bytes

February 4, 2016 By Jodi

I don’t know about you, but when something happens health wise either with me or the dogs, I usually have a bunch of questions. Once I get those answered I like to mull over the issue (similar to the way most people sip wine), then I form my thoughts of how I think I’d like to proceed. Once that’s done, I feel out a couple of other people.

As most of you know Sampson went in for routine tooth removal on the 19th of January and they discovered an irregular heart beat as well as a heart murmur. Since he was already at the vet he had a chest x-ray and the heart looked normal, so the next thing they suggested was an Ultrasound of his heart, which was also normal.

Golden Labrador Retriever

Another visit to the vet? I love them and all, but this is getting ridiculous. Just as ridiculous as a dog wearing boots.

The Dr. performing the Ultrasound said the next cause of these types of irregular heart beats is tumors on the liver or spleen. My vet called and asked if they could Ultrasound those as well and I said of course. (In for a penny, in for a pound, right?)  There were no tumors/masses on the liver or spleen, which was good news. BUT  they did find a very tiny nodule on one of one of his Adrenal glands.  When discussing this with another vet, I said, I’m just relieved she didn’t say mass and the vet said, yes it is a mass.  Way to lure me into feeling okay about this.

My vet thought it possible that Sampson might have Cushing’s disease and asked if she could run a blood test, which came back normal. She then suggested a urine test to check for dilution. I was pretty adamant that he didn’t have Cushing’s having already consulted Dr. Google, but I used my Ninja pee skills and dropped off a sample.

I was shocked when the vet called and said his urine was diluted. The next thing she said, was we should put him through the test for Cushing’s Disease. And that’s where I drew the line. My thought process was this,  he has no symptoms of Cushing’s, so why would I make him spend another full, stressful day at the vet’s office?

I put in a call to one of the owner’s of the practice who tends to lean towards the Holistic approach and asked him to call me to discuss it.

He opened the conversation with, “Welcome to Pandora’s box”. Which in layman’s terms means, we’ve ruled out a good portion of what Sampson DOESN’T have, but we still don’t know WHAT, if anything, he does have.

So we talked about the Cushing’s test and he had an alternative suggestion. There is a urine test (fairly new, currently only run at a laboratory in Wisconsin) which tests the levels of cortisol and creatine and it can rule out Cushing’s.

The way it was explained to me is thus, the test can do one of two things, it can tell you the dog DOESN’T have Cushing’s Disease, but it cannot tell you if the dog has it. Savvy?

The urine test was about $102 vs approximately $300 for all-day-at-the-vet to test for Cushing’s Disease. For me it was a no brainer. Put my dog through a stressful test, or utilize my pee ninja skills again? *Note here, it was not about the money, because I would spend the $300 IF I thought he had Cushing’s, but my Spidey senses were saying  NO.*

So Thursday night I picked up the dog’s water bowl around 8:00 in the hopes of making sure Sampson’s urine was good and concentrated. His first pee of the day was at 8:45 Friday morning and it looked nice and dark to me, but I dropped it off anyway.

The vet called on Tuesday and said “As you suspected, he does not have Cushing’s.” Well…she said there’s always a small chance, like the odds of him getting struck by lightening or winning the lottery. Which would be really rare, since he’s never played the lottery as long as I’ve known him.

I feel fairly confident in saying, we’ve ruled out Cushing’s Disease, but we need to monitor that little adrenal.  The vet was comfortable waiting a couple of months, but not me. I’d rather err on the side of caution (and Hubby agrees with me) so we plan on having it rechecked either the 17th or 24th of this month, depending on what the Ultrasound Dr. says.

The vet and I talked about what could be going on with that adrenal and it could be a benign little nothing that could have been there for a while, or it could be something really sinister. She spelled it for me and then the next words out of her mouth were, “I really regret spelling that for you just now, because I know you’re going to go on the internet.”

They know me SO well.

She then asked me to please not go searching around on the internet and I told her I wouldn’t. And I’m not.

In the meantime, he still has a partial ACL tear on his other leg and they can’t do surgery on him because they don’t know why he has the irregular heart beat. I’m not sure I WANT to do surgery on him to begin with, because he was one of those dogs that just never recovered well from it. Whether that was just the way Sampson is built or the surgery itself, we don’t know. The Vet says it doesn’t hurt to do a consultation with a surgeon just to see what they say as they have methods of working on high risk dogs that the typical vet doesn’t, but right now, he’s just so wiped out, I don’t have the heart to put him through it.

You can see the spot just above his knee where they shaved him for the Ultrasound.

You can see the spot just above his knee where they shaved him for the Ultrasound.

So for now, we are limiting him to two, five to seven minute very slow walks just to get him outside the yard to potty.

If the next Ultrasound shows no change with the adrenal, we’ll more than likely make an appointment to see a surgeon, if there are changes in the adrenal…well, we’ll cross that bridge when we get there.

Right now, I just feel really helpless and heartbroken for poor Sampson.
