A Day of Thanks

November 22, 2012 By Jodi

Today is Thanksgiving here, in a few short hours we will gather family and friends together and sit down to enjoy a meal together.

I’ve many things to be thankful for, not just this year but every year.  I have family and friends who love me, a wonderful blog family, a roof over my head, a decent home, a job, not to mention two wonderful dogs who I love dearly.

Throw in an (almost) five-year old grandson who still thinks going to Mimi’s house is the greatest gift in the world and an (almost) two-year old granddaughter who can now say, “I ol you Mimi” and it doesn’t get much better.

Yes, those are all wonderful things to be thankful for, and I am grateful for them every single day.

I thought today, it’d be nice to share something other than the traditional things that one normally is grateful for.

I wanted to write a beautiful piece about all the unsung heroes who get taken for granted every day, with little to no thanks.

  • People like our soldiers who sacrifice personal lives to protect our freedoms and uphold the motto, “Land of the free and home of the brave.
  • Firefighters and policemen and emergency personnel who work regardless of holidays to keep us safe.
  • Doctors and nurses working tirelessly in the hospitals to save lives.
  • Animal rescue workers who are out on the front line, experiencing the horrors that I myself can’t handle, helping those that can’t help themselves escape from the cruelty of man.

And all of those, I can’t think of.

Yes, I wanted to write a beautiful piece but somehow the words wouldn’t come, instead I offer this, a simple yet heartfelt thanks, and wish you all a safe and Happy Thanksgiving.

Happy Thanksgiving from all of us at Heart Like a Dog!

Are there any unsung heroes, that you can think of?

Shining Star

November 21, 2012 By Jodi

Last night Delilah and I had our second tricks class.  Can I tell you something?

Delilah and I have had our share of go-rounds.  You know it, because I’ve shared it here with you. Even with the challenges she’s faced, I know deep down in my heart what a good dog she is.  And there is one place where it shows.

My dog shines in the classroom setting.

We walk into the classroom and she is focused on me, waiting and watching and willing to learn.

Our task was to learn three tricks last night, play dead, roll-over and crawl.

I forgot my point and shoot, so I had to use my cell phone, which isn’t easy to work when you’re the one doing the training.

Our instructor was quite pleased with the progress we made playing dead and rolling over.  She then asked if she could borrow Delilah to show us how to teach them to crawl.

I giggled a little inside because I’ve been trying to get Delilah to crawl for about four years.

Yup, she got out there and crawled across the floor.

Okay, I’ll put my head down, but you’ll give me a treat, right?
Ummmm I like your treats.
I’m picking up what your putting down.

When I got home I had Hubby take a video of us doing each of the tricks. Please excuse the poor lighting and my messy housekeeping, I just wanted to show you what she learned.

(Excuse my ass.)

There was a new woman in our class last night. From what I could tell her husband was supposed to meet her there with their dog but he got stuck in traffic, so she just hung out observing.  She happened to sit right near Delilah and I and we ran into her on our way out.  She asked if she could pet Delilah and then she said, she has such a calming peaceful effect.

I said, REALLY?  I don’t think so.

But the more I thought about it, the more I realized she really is a shining star.

Is there an area where your dog shines?

Reflections

November 20, 2012 By Jodi

I had trouble with this post.  Maybe it’s because I’m just so close to making that two-year goal (eleven days) or maybe it’s because most of our dog walking takes place at night which to me equates to BORING.

It’s Tasty Tuesday, but I got nothing for Tasty Tuesday with the exception of adding on to last week’s post about Banana Chips.

There’s a bonus to using Banana Chips for training your dog.  If you get hungry on the trail you have something to eat.

Which is what I did last night. 🙂

But siriusly, you can’t make a post about eating Banana Chips. (Okay, I lied, some of you actually could write a post about eating Banana Chips.)

I turned to my photos for inspiration and found some photos I took a few weeks ago.

Back Story

When I was kid we had a friend around the corner with a dog named Patrick.  I’m not exactly sure what kind of dog Patrick was, but I do know one thing.

Patrick was a great dog for kids, because he was easy-going, friendly and walked well on a leash.

But there was another reason we really loved Patrick.

Patrick LOVED the flashlight!

We had so much fun walking that dog at night using the flashlight, as he would chase it this way and that and we would roar with laughter.

Flash Forward

It’s not quite as funny as an adult when you have a dog obsessed with reflections.

It doesn’t matter how big, or how small.  If it’s on the ceiling, the floor or the wall.

If I could just get a little higher, I know I could catch that. Oh look. A cobweb.

Somehow Delilah always sees it and once she does, it’s game on.

In this particular photo I had set my laptop down on the floor and the sun was hitting the screen just right, throwing a reflection up on the ceiling.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a fun game if there wasn’t some noise involved.  So she barks and runs back and forth trying to figure out how to get the elusive reflection.

And once you remove it….

Where’d it go? I know it was there, or was that just a cobweb?

She waits, patiently watching for it to appear again.

When reflections happen frequently she becomes really obsessed.

There was actually a period of time when we couldn’t eat in the dining room because the light reflecting on the silverware would make her bark and jump around.

Delilah barking and jumping around made hubby yell, “Delilah!  Lay down!”

Hubby yelling “Delilah! Lay down!” made my inner bitch roll her eyes and say, “Stab him with something.”

Thank goodness I rarely listen to my inner bitch.

Since we’ve always liked watching TV while we’re eating, we just sit on the couch.

It’s easier.

Do you have a dog obsessed with anything?  How do you manage it?

Have you voted for the Dogs of Blogville yet?  Remember you can vote once every 24-hour period.  That 24-hour period is based upon when you voted last.
