Let’s Pretend

February 14, 2013 By Jodi

Today we once again join our friends at 2 Brown Dawgs for This ‘N That Thursday.  Some days there’s a little of this or a little of that, but not enough for a full post.

Thank you 2 Brown Dawgs!

Let’s Pretend

Let’s pretend that I’m like Jen at My Brown Newfies and that I actually think in advance to buy props and stage a Valentine’s day photo shoot.

Let’s pretend that once I’ve taken the photo, I can actually use a graphic image program to tweak that photo just a tiny bit.

Are you getting this?

Good!

Let’s pretend that this is a really awesome photo showing my dogs lying together in the shape of a heart.

Go ahead and laugh, I'm a writer not a graphic artist.

Go ahead and laugh, I’m a writer not a graphic artist.

Are you done laughing?

Okay, then I promise I’ll do better next year.

Unless I don’t.

Snow challenges

Sampson and Delilah have a little yard routine they do when they hear or sense someone or something outside.  Our yard is pretty large and normally they run out the door, down the deck stairs and up along the fence line. I call this synchronized running and if they ever offer it in the dog Olympics, I’m entering my two.  (One day I hope to capture it on video, because it really is amazing.)

Then they station themselves at some point along the fence and observe or bark at whatever they please.

And there are other days when they burst out the door and one runs the fence line, while the other one runs up the stairs.  I guess this is their Hawaii Five-0 “you go this way, I’ll go that way” approach.

Our back yard is mostly hill.  Up hill as you may or may not be able to see from the photo.  The dogs can get back there either by running the fence line or by the stairs in the back.

After Charmo hit, there was no place for the dogs to potty, so Hubby used the snow blower and made a path around the house and a small area off the deck, but he didn’t blow along the fence line.

IMG_4051 While the snow is beginning to melt, there is still a lot of it!

IMG_4052 These are the stairs up back, I haven’t had a chance to shovel them yet.

So the other morning when Sampson got his dander up and charged out the door I said, “Where you gonna go?”  Then I laughed as I watched him run from one side of the house to the other via the snow blown path.

This morning however, I noticed Delilah tentatively (VBP) picking her way down the fence line.  Apparently the snow has melted enough for her to attempt the backyard.

Hold tight, I’m still working on that video. 🙂

Many thanks from our friends at the 2 Brown Dawgs blog for This ‘N That Thursday.

Do you plan photo shoots for your dogs? What kind of programs do you use to watermark or tweak your photos?

Monday Mischief

February 11, 2013 By Jodi

Of course our Monday Mischief post today just HAS to be on the “Blizzard of 2013.”

Saturday morning after we finally got the dogs outside to potty, Sampson, Delilah and I headed off to our park to check out the situation.

Our park sits smack dab in the middle of a cul-de-sac so naturally all the snow from the plow gets dumped in front.

The plow had already been through at least once, so there was already a good pile of snow in front of the entrance.

IMG_4023 You can barely make out the sign for the park but the gate is to the left of the sign and behind all that snow.

I was a little surprised that the dogs just went straight for it, by the time I got my camera out and set to video I missed a good bit of it.

It made me laugh so hard, watching them. (If the video doesn’t work, you can watch it here.)

When we went back later in the day there was SO much snow, we couldn’t even SEE the park sign.

They tried anyway, but gave up pretty quickly. (If the video doesn’t work you can see it here.)

Still I’m a persistent one, so yesterday I threw my shovel in the car and drove up to the park.  Using my shovel I notched out ‘steps’ so we could make a final effort.

They ran straight for the opening I’d made.  The ‘steps’ worked for climbing up, but I hadn’t thought about the descent.  As you’ll note from my comments, one of my legs sank up to my knee and it took a bit for me to get out.  While the dogs did get to the gate, the snow inside was too deep for us to walk.

Finally accepting defeat, we walked around the block. (If the video doesn’t work you can view it here.)

I’m fairly certain it will be a while before we can walk in our park, although I may attempt it from the other entrance next week and see if someone has forged a path.

What do you do when you’ve exhausted every means to get what you want?

Doot, Doot, Doot

February 10, 2013 By Jodi

(Sung to the tune of “Looking Out My Back Door” by Credence Clearwater)

Just woke up oh boy, open up the back door

Dogs and I look out, feast our eyes on the snow

Where’s my shovel, where’s my coat?

Gonna need a snow boat

Doot, doot, doot looking out my back door.

The Blizzard of 2013 or as I call it, Charmo.

The snow started Friday, but very slowly.  At around 7:00 pm we had about 4 or 5 inches.  At 10 pm when we went to let the dogs out for the night, we had over a foot!

Night Hubby had to go outside and shovel a path.

Delilah's Tail Both dogs were coaxed off the deck (that speck in the square?  That’s the tip of Delilah’s tail.)

Sampson turned right around and headed for the house, Delilah? She peed on the deck.

Holy snow you guys!

When we got up yesterday morning at 6:15 it was still snowing, Delilah went to go outside and she couldn’t push the door open!

Floor level This is the view from the floor of the porch looking out at our deck.

I grabbed my coat and shovel, and made a small path out.  Both dogs went out, Sampson turned around and went right back in the house.  Delilah? She peed on the deck.

Grill This was our deck at 6:15 yesterday morning, before I got the shovel.

Cars Delilah and I went to check out the front of the house, those three lumps you see, those are our cars.

Driveway measure This was right outside the garage before Hubby cleared the driveway, it was still snowing.

End of Driveway Measure This was the end of the driveway.

While Hubby worked on the driveway, I grabbed a shovel and worked my way up the steps to get to our front door so I could get the dogs and get them outside for a potty break.  (Sampson finally tinkled after about 14 hours!)

Once we were out I decided we could take a walk, since there weren’t any other dogs out and about!

IMG_4023 This is the entrance to our park. 🙁

IMG_4027 Oh we tried to get in.

IMG_4022 But we had to concede defeat.

IMG_4034 And settle for a walk down the street.

Later after it had finally stopped snowing and we had cleaned up a bit, I took them out for another walk.

Later Yup that’s blue sky on our way to see what our park looks like now.

Park Later I’m afraid we may not be able to walk in our park for a month!

Here our some other photos from our home and neighborhood after Charmo.

Back yard 2 Our backyard.

Street From our front door, before any snow moving was done.

House A neighbor’s house.

IMG_4030 Do you think they got their paper this morning?

The cars have been cleaned off, the bulk of the snow has been moved and the roads are once again open to travel.  All that’s left is to remove some snow from the roof and clear a path for the oil delivery scheduled for tomorrow. (He couldn’t make it up the driveway on Friday.)

How did you fare?  Were you in the blizzard’s path?

Doot, doot, doot.
