Tuesday’s Tails – April 30, 2013

April 30, 2013 By Jodi

Lisa over at Dogs N Pawz had an awesome idea for a blog hop that features shelter animals.

The idea started when Lisa and her son went to their local shelter to adopt a dog and realized some dogs end up in the no kill shelters for a very long time.  She wanted to do something to help showcase these animals so she started the blog hop.

You can join too by grabbing the badge and linking up.

The dog I’ve chosen to focus on today is a senior.  Sadly this senior was dropped off at the shelter along with his brother when his dad was deployed.  His brother a younger French Bulldog mix was quickly adopted, but poor sweet Bullwinkle has been passed over.

Bullwinkle

When Bullwinkle’s time ran out, the shelter employees moved him to the lobby where he proved to get along with every person and every dog he met.

American Lab Rescue (where my own sweet Delilah came from) currently has him in boarding.  Here’s what his petfinder profile says about him, “Bullwinkle is an easy-going boy who has a way of endearing strangers to him- he has a loveable, goofy personality, and he is looking to spend his golden years with a very special family! He has only known love in his life, and we want that to continue!”

Bullwinkle is 10 years young, weighs in at 99 pounds and has known nothing but love his entire life.  He’s neutered, up to date with his required shots and house trained.

You can read more about him on his petfinder page and the rescue’s contact information is there as well.

So many times when people are looking for a dog they overlook the seniors, for the obvious reason as time with them is limited. I used to think that way too.   Until I started reading Life at Golden Pines.  Kim takes in so many seniors and while I know her heart is sometimes broken when she loses one, the love she receives from these very grateful, loving dogs is immense.

If you’re in CT and looking for a four-legged companion, won’t you consider Bullwinkle?  I know he’d be ever so grateful and you’d also be putting a deployed soldier’s mind at ease, knowing his beloved friend was being loved and well cared for.

This is the Tuesday’s Tails blog hop, hosted by Dogs N Pawz.

Rescue Event

November 11, 2012 By Jodi

I spent a few hours yesterday at the Labs 4 Rescue Adoption event held at the Mellow Mutt, LLC.

While I’m not officially involved with Labs 4 Rescue, I have a friend who does the dog intakes so I go to lend moral support, help out where I can and basically spend time with some awesome dogs.

I also get to meet and talk to those who are really involved in rescue and sometimes make some great connections. Like the woman I met yesterday who does dock diving!

This event was run a bit different then the last Labs 4 Rescue event I attended.  For one thing Sara didn’t have the agility equipment out.  The last time it was out I think the kids played on it more than the dogs. 🙁

The other thing that was different was that most of the dogs were off leash so they had the opportunity to run around and really interact with people.

We did our best to get name tags on the dogs so anyone that was interested knew who to ask about, this didn’t always work but we did our best.

All told there were probably at least twenty dogs there and I took a ton of pictures, sadly I don’t remember some of their names, but I’m putting their pictures up anyway!  An event like this is a great place to learn about the dogs and their personalities.

For the most part they all got along really well.  There were one or two that got a little over-excited, and some that should really go to a home with an experienced dog person.

Hubby showed up too, and we were joking with a couple of people how the only color dog we were missing was black.

Then Hubby said and yellow because technically Sampson is a golden, and then my friend Marcie said, I think they even have gray ones.

I love my dogs but I think I’m quite content with the two that I have, HOWEVER there were two black dogs that I really fell in love with and if I were going to take one home it would have been Maddie or Rocky.

I really want my black lab to be a male because I intend on re-naming him Sirius Black Stone, but you’ll notice in the pictures that Maddie really took a shine to me.  I could tell the second I met her, she would be another challenging dog as she was all lab. 🙂

(You can enlarge the photo by clicking on it.)

Is one of them my furever family?
This is Maddie, I could see her giving me a run for my money.
Look at that smile, that’s a happy dog.
This young man just sat down and waited to be loved on.

What do you mean I can’t go home with him?
What’s with that black dog syndrome? I’m loveable.
Can’t remember this guy’s name, but he was adorable. I think he was adopted.
Is this not the sweetest photo?

This is Summer. Sweet girl.
This lady took the floor approach as well.
This is Gus, he’s only been with his foster mom for a couple of weeks. He loves playing with water bottles.
Chaz was all tuckered out. He was adopted! Yay Chaz!!

This guy didn’t want to leave his foster family.
I can’t remember this guy’s name.
Lots of lovies going around.
Marcie gave her share of lovies. She was a rock star at this event!

I don’t think I’m a glutton for punishment but I do like a good challenge. 🙂

Normally at these types of events the dogs do not go home with someone the same day. There were a couple of folks there who already had their adoption paperwork completed and were just waiting on the home visits.  There were two home visits that took place yesterday based on dog interest, so the beautiful yellow, (whose name I can’t remember) and Chaz (the little exhausted black lab) should be in their forever homes by the end of the day.

I love a happy ending, don’t you? Do you know anyone on the east coast looking for a great dog?  I’d be happy to work something out…..after December 1st of course!

Drew Barrymore's Bump

January 31, 2012 By Jodi

I love Drew Barrymore.  So when I saw the link “Barrymore’s Bump” I couldn’t help myself, I had to click.

As I read the article I found out that Drew’s bump wasn’t a baby, it was a puppy.  She had the puppy tucked up under her shirt (I assume) to keep the puppy from being frightened by all the people.  Once I realized it was a puppy, I cringed.

You know when a movie comes out that has a dog in it, how sales of those dogs go sky rocketing?  Yeah, and then a bunch of those same dogs wind up in shelters because people really just have no clue what kind of work goes into a dog?

Well I got a bit nervous thinking, what if Drew’s puppy garners that same reaction?  We already have so many dogs in shelters, we certainly don’t need hundreds (if not thousands) more.

The other reason I cringed was the L.A. Boutique mentioned in the article, “Bark n’ Bitches“.  Naturally me being me, I jumped to the conclusion this was a store that sold puppies and we all know how I feel about stores that sell puppies.   So I googled them and found their website.

The first thing I noticed on the website, was a video. The picture on the video showed a dog in a crate.  Aha!  My suspicions were confirmed.  And then I read a little further, all of the dogs offered for sale at the Boutique are rescued.

The Boutique sells dog beds, collars, and dog carriers, among other things.  Their food and treats are holistic and organic and the best part is the proceeds from the sales from the store, funds the rescue of dogs.

So then I had to click on the video, which actually follows the owner, (Shannon von Roemer) as she goes to a Los Angles shelter and rescues two dogs.  Of course there are many more there that she can’t rescue and you can hear the emotion in her voice as she talks about these sweet souls.

So Drew Barrymore’s new puppy is a shelter dog.

Hopefully this means that people who might be interested in getting a dog will follow Drew’s lead and adopt from a shelter or a rescue.

In my opinion, it’s better than a movie. 🙂
