As 2 Brown Dawgs says, “This ‘N That Thursday is for those times when you want to post about unrelated topics or each topic isn’t quite long enough to make up a whole post.  It can be anything you want, so feel free to grab the button and join us!”

Nosework

Delilah and I recently completed our third nosework class.  Our first class was just getting the dogs used to sticking their heads in boxes in their search for food.

Our second class Ariane added a couple of every day objects, as their hunts won’t always be in a controlled setting.

This past week, she upped the ante even more, by placing the food in random places.

Most of the dogs really ‘get it’ now and become super excited to ‘play.’

I try to keep Delilah busy and distracted until it’s our turn, but the funny thing is after only two nosework classes she’s already associating the word “Ready” with hunting, as I slipped and used it while practicing our “heel” command.  She instantly turned and started towards the boxes.  Good thing I had a grip on the leash.

Now if I could only get her to respond that quickly to a recall.

I have another video that I’ll try to share tomorrow, youtube wasn’t cooperating.

Dog fight in Nosework

There was a dog fight in Nosework class on Tuesday and it wasn’t my dog.  Is it wrong to be excited about that?  I don’t mean about the fight, I mean the fact that it wasn’t my dog!

Here’s what happened:

Ariane said if we were comfortable and our dogs were under voice control we could let them off-leash.  Most of us just dropped the leash because our dogs were excited and ran right to the center of the room.

Tegan who is about Delilah’s size (but I don’t know her breed) was ready to work, her mom released her and instead of running straight to the center of the room, Tegan headed for Ariane, but at the last-minute she veered off and headed toward another dog.

Remember when I told you about the little American Eskimo dog that was a little yippy?  Yeah, that’s the one Tegan headed toward and Misty yap, yap, yapped right in Tegan’s face and Tegan said, “You did not just do that!”  And she let Misty have it. Then Misty responded and whoop there it is.

Thankfully the dogs were separated and no damage was done.  Of course Tegan no longer has the freedom of having her leash dropped.

Delilah being the nosy Lab that she is perked up, but I calmly told her it was okay and she was okay we maintained the status quo in our little area of the room.

Product Reviews

I mentioned a couple of weeks back about trying to live a healthier lifestyle and sharing what I’m learning with you.  I have a product review in the works for you and your pup and hope to have that up next week.

Are there any types of products you’d like to learn about?  Any toxins you’d like replaced with a more natural product? I’d be happy to do some research. 🙂

This is the This ‘N That Thursday Blog Hop hosted by our friends at 2 Brown Dawgs.

Whatever you do today, make it a good one!

Co-Hosted Follow-Up Friday, March 22, 2013

March 22, 2013 By Jodi

Welcome to the latest edition of co-hosted Follow-up Friday.

https://www.heartlikeadog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/follow-up-friday.jpg

My co-hostess this week has co-hosted with me many times. I learn so much from her, and I love reading about her training sessions with her brown dawgs.

What more can I say about her that I haven’t already said?

How about thank you for co-hosting. 🙂

Don’t forget to stop by and visit the 2 Brown Dawgs blog to check out their Follow-Up Friday post.

SDS – Author’s Note

How reassuring to know I’m not the only one with spoiled dogs. 🙂  Truthfully those nights don’t happen that often, but when they do…well you know.

Happy Saint Patrick’s Day – Author’s Note

I found a delicious gluten-free soda bread that complemented our meal perfectly.  I timed it pretty well so the bread was still slightly warm and the butter melted.

YUMMO

Still looking forward to Sunday’s corned beef hash and egg breakfast!

Counter Surfing 101 – Author’s Note

I’ve said it before, that dog has mad skills.

For those that asked, no she did not get sick.  She is known as the dog with the cast iron stomach.

When she first came to live with our pack she had a sensitive type stomach, but once she got used to having two squares a day with lots of treats and a snack, there isn’t much that upsets her stomach.

Of course, there are exceptions.

One time she ate 3/4 pound of butter, wrappers and all.  I thought she’d be hurling or shitting like a goose, but no.

She did drink a lot of water and I watched her like a hawk the entire day.  Finally after a few hours she vomited the tiniest bit of foam.

No, the time she really hurled was after she’d cleaned up a good portion of the yard.

Talk about vile.

She cleared the house on that one.

Tasty Cubes – Update

The dogs love the little frozen bits of whatever they’re getting but I won’t be buying any more Dorot spices. I did not realize that these little cubes contain soybean oil.

Remember the post where I told you I’d share the healthy changes we were making both in the dogs and our lifestyle?  Well one of the biggest things I’m trying to avoid is Genetically Modified Organisms a.k.a. GMO’s.

Unfortunately soy makes the list of the top 10 genetically modified foods.

Many thanks to Donna, from Donna and the Dogs to alerting me to this.

GMO’s are very, very bad.  You can read more about them as well as find non-GMO brands here.

More to come.

Lessons of Love – Author’s Note

I’m so happy that I can teach my grandchildren to be respectful of animals.  I feel it is my responsibility as a dog owner and animal advocate to educate whenever possible.  As you know, some adults are a real hard sell, but I’m a firm believer that the youth of today will make the change I want to see for animals.

One of my favorite pictures with my grandson and the dogs.

And I’m starting in my own backyard.

Let Me Take You Down…To Funky Town – Update

Thank you for all your kind words, I really appreciate the support.  Part of it is I sometimes feel like I don’t know what to write about and I think on those days, I’m going to have to give myself permission to skip a post, or throw out a photo.

Every day doesn’t have to be a chapter of a book, right?

That’s it for me!  I hope you have a great weekend.  Many, many thanks to our friends at 2 Brown Dawgs for co-hosting the Follow-Up Friday blog hop,

Nosy Girl

March 13, 2013 By Jodi

Delilah’s nosework class started last night.

I was anxious, as I always am going into a new class.  There is a whole new dynamic of dogs to get used to, not to mention their owners.

Truthfully most dog owners I’ve taken classes with are pretty clueless.

The first clue I had that there might be trouble was the three people with their dogs standing smack in the middle of the path to the entrance.

I’m pretty sure I rolled my eyes and took the long route around. By the time I got to my destination, two of them had moved into the building.

One of them, took a seat right in front of the door.  With her slightly excited Goldendoodle. (Okay, I’m guessing it was a Goldendoodle, I’m not really sure, I do know she was excited though.)

Ariane was near the door and I said to her, I can’t get by that dog.

Thankfully Ariane asked the woman to step aside for a minute so I could get inside.

Boxes There was about six boxes in the center of the room

Sprite Sprite (the Goldendoodle) was first up.

Since this was the first week, we used the same box for each dog, because we didn’t want all the boxes to smell like food and confuse the dogs.  Yes, in the beginning we are using food because we know that dogs like food and they are self rewarded when they find it.

Shelby Shelby was very shy around the box, but did much better her second turn, with a little coaching from her handler.

Oakley This is Oakley, he’s a Rhodesian Ridgeback, he’s been in two of our other classes.

Ready We’re supposed to psyche the dogs up, ready? ready? ready?  Find!

Good Girl Delilah doesn’t need to be psyched up and she’s not shy.  She’s a lab, she knows when there’s food around.

The harder part is hanging around waiting for our turn and keeping her interested in me.

The second turn we had, all I said was ready?  And she lunged for the boxes. Thankfully I’m still hanging on to my winter fat which prevented me from turning into a kite.

Dee I think this will be a fun class, when we aren’t sitting around waiting.

Oakley’s companion uses the down time to work Oakley on his other commands.  She reinforces front, spin, around, peek-a-boo.  I think it’s a great idea, so I started doing that with Delilah too.  I really want to teach her peek-a-boo, it’s so cute when Oakley does it.

If you’re interested in learning more about nosework, Donna and the Dogs had a nice post up not too long ago that explained it pretty well, Nosing Around.

This is an easy game to teach your dog providing (s)he is food motivated.  It is also very tiring, so on those days when the weather doesn’t cooperate and you need to find a way to tire out your dog, this is your go to game.

  • To teach it, start with about 5 boxes of varying sizes.
  • The first couple of times you can let your dog watch you place the food, after that, they should be in another room, or distracted by someone else.
  • Rev your dog up using an excited voice…..”Are you ready, you ready to go” whatever you use when you are getting your dog excited.
  • Then give the cue, I use FIND.  You can use whatever makes sense to you.
  • Don’t lead your dog, the goal is to let your dog use their nose.  Of course, if she veers totally off course, you may want to stroll towards the box, but don’t point to it.
  • Once your dog finds the correct box, praise and drop some more treats in there.  You want them to really get the idea of what they’re supposed to be doing.

A couple of other tips:

Use one of the boxes strictly for the food, that way the scents don’t get all muddied up and confuse your dog.  If you want to make it easier on yourself, mark it food.  Your dog can’t read, right?

I’m actually going to put a plate in my box, because of Delilah’s tendency to lick everything.

Keep your dog on leash the first few times, just until they understand the game.

Vary the rooms you use to play this in, you want them to use their nose, not their memory.

Have you ever played this game with your pup? Do you think mental stimulation is as tiring as physical?
