Follow-Up Friday – September 19, 2014

September 19, 2014 By Jodi

Welcome to this week’s edition of Follow-Up Friday, the post where I highlight reader’s comments, answer questions and generally just wrap up my week.

You Make Me Smile – September 14, 2014

Nom, nom.

Nom, nom.

2 Brown Dawgs said, “Love the shiny spit on the kong…lol.”

LOL You can have it.  This dog has a very, very wet mouth!!  Even giving her a treat, you need a towel.

Chelsea Price said, “I ADORE this series. It’s so refreshing to read such positive and upbeat posts each week.”

Thank you, I’m so glad.  My dogs bring me so much joy and I just want to share that with you all.

Curiosity…it’s Not Just For Cats

Lauranne said, “I was half waiting for the spray in the face photo!”

OMD could you imagine?  She would have freaked out!  I had watched the sprinkler as we approached and knew there was not a chance of that, unless she went around it, then all bets were off!

Two French Bulldogs said, “I bit that thing this morning. Not smart.”

OH NO!  I hope you weren’t too traumatized.

The Lab-ra-language

Emma said, “We sit at the back door when we want to go play in the yard, but when we want to come back in, we just ring our dog doorbell and Mom comes running. Watching Mom come running is the best because she knows if she makes us wait, I will lay on that bell non stop until she comes!”

Emma, you always make me smile.  You and your sisters are the main reason I do not have a doggie doorbell. LOL

DZ Dog says, “Dante likes to employ a very loud deep sigh….it means, “dang you guys are boring for making me wait.”

Ah, the sigh.  Yes, Delilah does that occasionally too, and sometimes she uses a little “haaaarumpff,” it’s absolutely hysterical.

It’s Dog or Nothing said, “It’s really amazing how we’re able to communicate so effectively with our dogs. They really do have a way of telling us what they need/want. Mauja likes to whack me with her paw if I’m not paying enough attention to her.”

LOL they do have a way of communicating, don’t they?

Sampson and the Two Dicks

You guys, how can you meet two men named Dick and not want to write a post about that?

Some dogs just have it. What can I say?

Some dogs just have it. What can I say?

Emma said, “To revisit an old topic of yours…why you get so much spam… :) You know with that title the world wants to read whether we know the true meaning or not.”

Yes, that would certainly explain the porn spam.  True story…when I first started blogging and knew nothing about plugins, I published a post that had the word ‘bush’ in it.  You wouldn’t believe the porn spam I got on that post.  It got to a point where I actually unpublished the post.  Thankfully now I have that amazing spam filter and I don’t see any spam.  At all.

Molly the Wally said, “LOL we were in the gutter for a moment with that title.”

LOL well I admit the title was designed for that purpose. 😉

SlimDoggy said, “Emma is right…you attract spam with those titles…but then again, you attract me, so what does that say about me??? ”

LOL it says a lot to me. 😉  Can’t wait to hang out with you!

Frankie and Ernie said, “THAT was an interesting walk…. It reminds me of the old … I’m Darrel and this is my Brother Darrel.”

That was exactly what I was thinking!!

Jan asked, “I am sure your neighbors–including the dicks–are grateful to have such a great politician such as Sampson to keep order in your neighborhood. Has he considered running for national office?”

He has not, he just can’t find a good handler. 😉

Two French Bulldogs said, “I stand around and wait for people to approach me. Mom said her heart breaks at my look when some buddy walks by and ignores me.”

I totally get that.  It breaks my heart too when someone will not acknowledge him.  But he just tries again the next time, he’s good like that.

Update on Leroy

The Go Fund Me page is up.  I want to thank all of you who have contributed to Leroy’s Fund and have shared his story.  I know having funds to help defer the costs of his care is a great relief to Jen and her family.    Please know, if you shared Leroy’s story, you have helped.  If you donated, no matter how much you have helped.

Leroy is still retaining fluid and is scheduled for a scope today, hopefully that will give them the answers they need to help Leroy recover.

Just a reminder if you’d like to share his Go Fund Me page, you can find it HERE.  And if you want to stop by and let Jen know you’re thinking of her, her Facebook page is HERE.

The thing I love best about this blogging community is the community.  You guys are the absolute best and that always shines through, especially when one of our own needs you.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

The Lab-ra-language

September 17, 2014 By Jodi

Dogs remind me a lot of babies.  I mean, with a baby it cries and then you have to figure out if a diaper needs to be changed, the baby needs to be fed, the baby is tired or something else.

Dogs have similar needs.  For mine, they want food, affection, a walk, outside to potty and sometimes they just want to play.

Do you know your dog’s language?  My dogs have their own unique ways of communicating their needs.

Sampson’s Language.

When he wants to eat, he lies right in front of his food bowl and patiently waits.

When he wants affection he will come sit in front of you and either lay his head on your lap/leg or paw at you with his big beefy paw.  Or sometimes he will just lie on his back in front of you with a big shit eating grin on his face.  It’s a sure fire way to get one of us off the couch and down on the floor to do his bidding.

Rub my belly, please.

Rub my belly, please.

When he wants to outside he barks at the door.

When he wants to play, he brings you a toy, sets it down, stares at it and growls at you.

When he wants to walk, his tail goes up and he heads for the front door.

Delilah’s Language

When Delilah wants to eat, she employs the Lab Death Stare (not to be confused with the Death Star, that’s a totally different movie.) She sits in front of you and stares at you, as if that simple act can motivate you to do her bidding.  If the Death Stare fails to motivate you, she will often times use the sigh for great effect.  Stare down, “Hhhhhhhhh.”  On the rare occasion we eat before the dogs, she will often lie on her mat and whine slightly.  Not horribly and annoyingly, just enough to remind you she is ‘patiently’ awaiting her own meal.

You finally learned the Lab-ra-language. Your mother must be so proud. It only took you 7 1/2 years.

You finally learned the Lab-ra-language. Your mother must be so proud. It only took you 7 1/2 years.

If you move, she will jump up and race you to the kitchen, regardless of whether it’s feeding time or not.

When she wants affection, she will come and shove her head under your hand or between your legs.  Or she will just climb up into your lap.  She has also learned the lie on your back with your feet in the air trick from Sampson.

When Delilah wants to go outside, she stands at the door and makes a little “Unnh” or growl sound.  (Hubby will often be sitting less than 10 feet away and miss this.)  Once she’s been out however and wants to come back in, she will bark incessantly at the door until you open it.  If you are in the kitchen preparing her meals, it’s even more intense.

When Delilah wants to play, she will bring you a toy and drop it for you to throw.

When it is time for a walk, she can barely hold still for you to put her collar and harness on and once you head for the door she will launch herself off the steps towards the door.

Two labs, two different languages.  It’s sort of like how Canada has English  and French.  One country, two languages.

Do your pets have their own language?  How do they convey their needs to you?

Curiosity…it’s Not Just for Cats

September 15, 2014 By Jodi

What's that Mama, inquiring labs want to know.

What’s that Mama, inquiring labs want to know.

I think I'll just stick my lab-ra-nose right here and see what it is.

What the Woof!

What the Woof!

Do you see that? It moved, the dang thing moved!

Do you see that? It moved, the dang thing moved!

This happened last weekend on one of our walks.  I love watching her explore new things.  Of course I had the benefit of know what was going to happen.  But I love how she followed the steam of the sprinkler with her eyes.  What do your pets do when confronted with something they haven’t seen before?
