One Man’s Trash – Celebrate Shelter Pets

December 2, 2014 By Jodi

Shelter Pets

Today is Celebrate Shelter Pets day and I couldn’t let the day go by without celebrating my special shelter girl, Delilah.

Delilah -

Holy woof, are you going to complain about me again?

I know, I know.  She’s a little bit on the crazy side, but there are many, many people who get normal shelter dogs that aren’t as crazy as this one. “-)  Besides if Delilah was like Sampson what the hell would I blog about?

My girl came to us via American Lab Rescue in May of 2007.  She was found in a high kill shelter in Lousiana, sent to foster in Tennessee and eventually made her way to us.

We were told she was between 2 to 3 years old, but our vet guessed her age to be about 18 months.  Not having the benefit of knowing when she was actually born, our vet’s office listed her date of birth as December 1st.  We choose to celebrate Delilah’s birth on the 14th.  A day that is very special to me, as it was my beloved grandmother’s birthday as well.

The rescue told us she’d been spayed but we discovered shortly after us that she wasn’t.  When she went in for her actual spay we discovered that she’d already had at least one litter of puppies.

Having spent the last 7 1/2 years with this amazing dog it simply boggles my mind how people can so casually drop a pet off at a shelter without a second thought.  Someone, somewhere lost an amazing opportunity to have a life filled with love and laughter, all courtesy of this amazing being.

You know what they say, “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.”  And Delilah surely is a treasure to me.

When You Have a Dog Like Delilah

December 1, 2014 By Jodi

When you have a dog like Delilah, holidays can be challenging.  Because siriusly, any time you’re working with food, Delilah has to be there.

You know, just in case you drop a crumb.

We hosted Thanksgiving this year and I can’t tell you how many times I said, “Get out of the kitchen” on Thursday.  After about the 10th time, I put her in the bedroom and put a gate across the door and finished my food preparations.

When everything was ready, I let her out again.  Now the fun begins.  Keeping her from stealing food off the table.

We had 11 people for dinner and the table only seats six, so we added a little card table.  This means the food can’t all fit on the table, so we used the breakfast bar for the dinner food and as soon as dinner was over, we cleaned up the food and put it away.

But then came dessert.  The dessert foods went out on the pool table which is a little bit taller than the breakfast bar or table.  Did that stop Delilah?

Let me just check to make sure you've cleaned that table thoroughly.

Let me just check to make sure you’ve cleaned that table thoroughly.

Yes, yes she is THAT bold.  And she did it right in front of me too.

I don’t know about you, but I want to get as much as possible out of my turkey.  So as soon as everyone had packed up their goodies to take home, I put the turkey in the stock pot to start my turkey soup.

I'm from the health department...yes, it looks like you've done this correctly.

I’m from the health department…yes, it looks like you’ve done this correctly.

Remember last week when Jackie Bouchard asked, “So… how does she get stuff out of the sink?? Is she that tall? Does she jump up on the counter?”

There you have it Jackie, the stove is no higher than my sink.  I swear this dog could walk on two legs.  Truthfully I was more worried about her burning her paw, then her licking the pot but it didn’t seem to phase her.

Did you remember today kicks off the Advent Calendar for Dogs over on Kol’s Notes?  I’m super excited to be joining, Jodi, Jen, Dawn and Jan for this gigantic giveaway!!

Every day one of us will be hosting a trivia question, all you have to do is go to Kol’s Notes to enter the answer.  Easy peasy right?

Plucking My Last Nerve

November 24, 2014 By Jodi

This weekend it seemed like Delilah was trying to pluck my last nerve.

It started out on Friday night.  I was having some trouble defrosting their food and bringing the temperature up from ice cold.  I emptied the dishpan, added some warm water and set her dish inside it, I sat down in the living room.  A few minutes later I went in, changed the water and placed the bowl back in the sink.  Walked back to the living room and Delilah was in the sink trying to eat the food.

I was so mad, I yelled quite loudly and made her lie on her bed until it was time for dinner.

And you know what?  I didn’t feel bad about it either.

Saturday morning we went downstairs to open Mom’s blinds and Delilah stole a muffin mom was defrosting for breakfast.  Luckily, I was right there and quickly grabbed it.  The she took a pair of Mom’s underwear out of the laundry and rolled in them.

My sister came in with Mom’s groceries and while we were bringing the bags in and trying to put the groceries away,  Delilah ate a grape.

My sister was upset, but I just shrugged it off and said, “She already stole Mom’s muffin.”

Now you guys know me, I’m not politically correct, and if you haven’t figured it out yet, sometimes I can be a bit….what shall I call it?

I’m going with raunchy.

Well no surprise, but my sister is too.  Anyhoo, this statement, “She already stole Mom’s muffin” understandably got my sister and I off on a tangent.

Sister: “She stole Mom’s muffin?  I’m not sure I like the sound of that.”

Me:  “She did, she stole Mom’s muffin.”

Sister: “Did she lick Mom’s muffin too”

You get the idea where the conversation went from there.  Quite truthfully, I can’t remember much of it, probably because I was laughing so hard.

Of course, Delilah was now on a roll and the weekend continued from there.

She licked my tomato soup cup and I’m pretty sure she drank water out of the sink.

Finally yesterday morning she took a buttery spatula out of the sink and brought it into the living room to clean up on my brand-new-less-than-24-hours-old throw rug.

And people wonder why I start my day with whiskey in my coffee.

It’s because of this dog.

That's just a load of tosh. Look at this face, would I do something like that?

That’s just a load of tosh. Look at this face, a sweet face like this wouldn’t do all those things.  Would it?

It boggles my mind.  Because she knows so many words. Like last night for instance I gave her her frozen Kong and she took it into the living room and put it down on the new rug.  I went in and said “Eck, no, over here.” And she picked up the Kong and moved.

WTF why can’t she understand not to steal stuff off the counters? Any of you have luck training dogs like Delilah?
