Delilah the Defender

January 26, 2015 By Jodi

SlimDoggy had a post last week, How Protective is Your Dog?  As I began writing my response, I realized my response was more like a post.

I got a good thing going here. Thankyouverymuch.

I got a good thing going here. Thankyouverymuch.

I have one protective dog, Delilah.  I joke that Sampson would rush an intruder for a belly rub. He loves everyone.  In fact, he only ever growled at one person, it was a man on the beach in North Carolina.  Immediately I thought, that is not a nice man.  I found out after he was the neighborhood jerk.

Delilah on the other hand is extremely protective.  The first time we noticed it was shortly after she came to live with us.  We were having a tag sale in anticipation of moving, my sister who Delilah had seen many times before, opened the gate to walk into the yard and Delilah wasn’t expecting it.  Growling she rushed towards my sister, thankfully we were right there to assure her everything was okay.

About five months later we were settling into our current house.  The process involved moving the washer/dryer hook up from the basement to the master closet.  Because of limited space, we ordered new appliances.

Our plumber happened to be here when the appliances were delivered.  Sampson was at daycare, but Delilah was home because she was recovering from being spayed.  When the delivery men arrived Delilah went ballistic.  I’m not sure what exactly set her off.  I’m guessing it had something to do with her life before us, but I don’t know with any certainty.

The deliverymen were hispanic and one was wearing a hat while the other wore a bandana.  I had Delilah on leash to try to keep her from over exerting herself.  When the delivery men started up the stairs, Delilah lost her shit, she was barking and lunging so badly, I had to shut her in a bedroom because I was afraid she’d hurt herself.

My plumber stayed until the deliverymen left and when I opened the door to let Delilah out of the room, she knew exactly where those deliverymen had been.  She tore into the bedroom intent on putting a hurting on someone.  Thankfully she calmed down when she realized it was our plumber.

One morning in early summer I had the back door open.  I was in the kitchen taking care of morning chores, my sister had dropped by and we were chatting.  I had completely forgotten the lawn was scheduled for a tick spraying and we were first on the list.

I saw the man walk onto the deck the same time she did.  Her four legs were faster than my two.  She tore out the door with me behind her.  The bug man was quick (evidently he’s used to charging dogs) and jumped up onto our retaining wall.  She put her paws right up on the wall and was letting him know he was not welcome.

Our oil fill pipe is at the back of the house, right next to the french doors.  I hate having to get oil when we aren’t home because I know a person in the yard tosses her over the edge, but the delivery people can never give you the exact time of deliver.  We had an oil delivery in November, I came home just as the man was getting back into his truck.  He said,”Man your dog wanted a piece of me.  She was barking and jumping at the door, finally I just knelt on the deck and bowed my head.  Then she was okay.”

It’s not just the house she’s protective of.  New Jersey is the only state on the East coast (probably the whole country) where you can’t pump your own gas.  This means someone has to come up to the car window.  This does not sit well with Delilah, she barks and growls trying to get out the window at the threat.

Typically Delilah is fairly aloof with people.  She may show initial interest but once she’s checked them out, she’s ready to move on.  One day this past summer a man approached us on a walk.  He was walking slowly towards us and talking softly.  Delilah growled.  I said not happening and moved her out of the situation.

I’ve no doubt she would die protecting me, but I’d rather not put her in a situation where she feels she has to defend herself or me, it’s easier to listen to her instincts and remove us both from a potentially scary situation.

Funny things dogs do.

Die? Let’s not exaggerate Mama.

Did you read SlimDoggys’ post?  Do you have a protective dog or would your dog trade you for a belly rub?

You Make Me Smile – January 25, 2015

January 25, 2015 By Jodi

You make me smile (or laugh), the sweet,  funny, loving things my dogs do on a daily basis that brings a smile to my face or a laugh to my lips.

Sampson, the way you use a pillow like a person does…

Dog uses pillow like a person You make me smile.

This picture is from about 9 years ago, but he still does it to this day.  What kinds of ‘human’ things do your dogs do that make you smile?

Follow-Up Friday – January 23, 2015

January 23, 2015 By Jodi

Welcome to this week’s edition of Follow-Up Friday, the post where I highlight reader’s comments, answer questions and generally just wrap up my week.

You Make Me Laugh – January 18, 2015

Funny things dogs do.

Make sure you get my best side.

Cupcake says, “There’s no such thing as a blooper. Mom calls these “the first ten pictures before the one she needs.””

Jan K said, “She’s such a nut! No, it’s not a blooper, it’s perfect!”

Monika said, “This dog has so much character, especially in the way she looks at you and the camera. :)”

Lauranne said, “She would make a great model – she manages to get so much of her personality across in one still photo. Please go down the modeling route with her – I can just imagine the posts!!”

Awe you guys, you are so sweet.  She really does have a lot of character, I just wish I could capture it every time.

Bad Dogs…

Linda Moore said, “I had a beagle that did the same thing. They have pills for it. They make the shit taste bad. Did you read that? How shit is made to taste worse, I don’t know! But those pills must be crazy gross!”

O.M.G.  Yes, I read that and it made me laugh!!  I’m sorry for not linking to your site, but when I clicked on it, nothing would load. 🙁

Sophie said, “This is an ongoing problem with Gus. We tried everything, including the bad tasting stuff from the vet that you sprinkle on the potty.”

My philosophy is if I have to sprinkle something on the potty, I might just as well pick it up. 🙂

Emma said, “One of the first things Bailie learned was drop it, leave it. ”

It’s a great command.  I’ve been working Delilah on “leave it.” We started it on our walks when we are passing other dogs.  She’s doing very well with it and has gotten to the point where she sees another dog and she will immediately look to me for her treat.  I’m hoping this will translate to the poop and when she sees an enticing pile, she will look to me.  Fingers crossed. But you have to see the poop to tell her to leave it. Hehehe

Lauranne said, “Thankfully (and I can’t believe I am starting this sentence with that word but..) thankfully Mity only eats his own poo not other dogs (and yes I nearly typed people, which is a whole other level of ugh!)”

BWA HA HA There are so many things I can’t believe I type.

Michelle said, “My Foxy was a recovering poop addict. She didn’t discriminate either – she’d eat her poop, her brother’s poop, cat poop, whatever she found. I tried all the store bought so called solutions as well different home remedies (feeding her pineapple so her poop would taste bad). The only thing that worked was keeping her on a leash & telling her to leave it & drop it. As she got older, she had a few relapses (as most addicts do) but mostly cut the habit.”

Both my dogs get pineapple every single day.  We’ve also used many of the ‘remedies’ with no success.  You are right, there will probably be relapses but if we can miss most of it, I’ll be happy.

Jan K asked, “Are you sure you ever want to get a beagle? Because that is like their favorite thing to eat. ”

LOL I love beagles, but I’ve forgotten the gross things they like to eat.

Elaine said, “Luckily, Haley doesn’t eat dog poop but rabbit poop must be a pretty tasty treat for her! Isn’t it funny how some walks are just perfect and other walks make you feel like you should have just stayed at home on the couch?”

With these two, most days I wish I’d stayed on the couch!  Especially when someone eats poop. LOL

Blueberry’s Human asked, “Does Delilah enjoy holding things in her mouth? Maybe you could train her to hold a favorite toy on walks so she is less likely to taste everything she sees? ”

If she held something in her mouth, how would she eat poop? 😉  Seriously, I don’t think I could get her to carry something for an entire walk.

Level With Me

Sue said, “Wish I had some words of wisdom. Just so disappointed that Delilah’s problem has not gone away :-(”

You and me both.  But I’m not giving up, I’m just not made that way.

Retro Rover said, ” Ive never heard of allergies causing liver issues in dogs, though Id be curious to know. As you know our Ping has elevated liver values. Currently her liver values are good but her cholesterol is sky high so we are working on figuring out whats causing that and if its liver related.”

Check out my answer below (under Daisy’s question).

Pamela said, “I’ve been very lucky and have not yet had a dog with allergies (knock wood). But I can tell you I’ve gotten excellent results working with a holistic vet. …Don’t you wish she could talk?”

I like the holistic vet myself but so far the things he’s given me haven’t helped.  As for the talking, only if she wasn’t sassing me, or talking non-stop.  Can you hear her, “It’s 9 o’clock, it’s snack time, you know that right? Did I mention it’s 9′ o’clock?”

Blueberry’s Human asked, “What exactly does the cleanse entail? ”

It’s basically a combination of supplements and vitamins that you give the dog for a month or so, then keep up with some of the supplements.

Slimdoggy said, “You might try testing it yourself first. We completely cut all proteins for Jack – gave him single protein (salmon) everything, food, treats, etc. That cleared up his allergic reactions and his pre-IBD. Chicken is in EVERYTHING so it’s not surprising many dog’s grow an intolerance too it. Try cutting it completely.”

Thank you.  Chicken necks is part of their diet, so I’ll be definitely be talking to my vet about this.

Jana Rade said, “There is a blood test for food allergies in dogs too. Different vets have different opinions on this. We did it with Jasmine and than ran with the results. It worked out well for her.”

I will check with my vet about this as well.  Thank you.

Daisy said, ” My daughter (especially) and I have food allergies too, and our diets have changed exponentially because of what we found out through blood tests. The result is that we feel so much better and many symptoms have cleared up (some things I didn’t even realize were symptoms!), so we know it’s right for us.

I have food allergies/sensitivities as well and I know they cause inflammation in my body, and when I eliminate them I feel so much better.  I’ve been told her liver has some inflammation (hence the elevated levels) and that’s what I’m wondering if it could be a food allergy.

My Devious Mind

The mess in my park.

Come gather ’round the fire boys and girls.

Sheena said, “Make sure Chet wears the “Jason” mask!! Lol! And make sure you call me……I’d LOVE to help!!!”

Sisters, you have to love them.  She ALWAYS has my back. xoxo

2 Brown Dawgs said, “Well you could sure freak the kids out with your prank, but do kids these days really freak out about much?…I guess Blog Paws is doing things differently this year. Instead of doing a presentation to a group, you will be sitting down one-on-one with bloggers? So how long is the meeting and how many will you see?”

I doubt the kids would freak out, but it might be fun to try.

As for Blog Paws, I will be seeing 9 people for 10 minutes each.  This is something new they are trying.  I will have a basic presentation but hope to be able to offer some unique advice based on a questionnaire I will have the fill out.

Daisy said, “I’d leave some fake blood behind splattered around their favorite site in case they come back to check things out in daylight. (I’m a writer too!) ;)”

A girl after my own heart. 🙂

Blueberry’s Human said, “One time, when I was less old than I am now, my younger brother and I were in the desert (during the day) and we decided it would be fun to start a fire in one of the designated barbecue grills (we were stone cold sober, btw). Then we thought it would be even more fun to throw various things in there to watch them catch on fire (plastic, etc). We never realized that extreme wind plus a roaring fire near a dry desert tree would equal things getting out of control. The tree nearest the grill caught fire SO FAST. Thankfully, there were some old people in RVs nearby and they graciously put out the fire with jugs of water.”

OMG that must have terrified you.  I am pretty sure these kids don’t really know what could happen if they were careless.

That’s it for me peeps, thanks for all the awesome comments, and have a wonderful weekend!
