Nursing Home Tales and Advent Calendar for Dog Lovers Day 19

December 19, 2013 By Jodi

Today we’re joining 2 Brown Dawgs and Ruckus the Eskie, for This ‘N That Thursday. You know, some days you have a little of this or a little of that.  It’s an anything goes kind of day!

Many thanks to our hosts!  Let’s get started shall we?

My mom came home from the rehabilitation center yesterday and went to spend some time at my sister’s place.  But before she did we managed to get the dogs up to visit her once.

Mom and Sampson She cried when she saw him.  She said he’s getting so gray!  But at least you can see where I get my Heat Miser hair from, I do come by it naturally. 🙂  I know that was mean, she’s in a nursing home for Dog’s Sake!  I’m a horrible daughter and I’m going to hell.

good boy We brought the dog’s mats so they’d have a place to lie down and we shut the door to her room.  It happened to be around dinner time and there was a knock on the door and the door immediately opened.  Thankfully I’m quick cause I caught Delilah’s leash as she bolted for the door.  I can only imagine the chaos that would have reigned in that place with those poor defenseless people getting their meals and Delilah on the loose.  (Has anyone ever been kicked out of a convalescent home?) The poor girl who opened the door screamed and practically dropped the food tray.  She was terrified of Sampson and his ‘green’ eyes.

good Girl After that fiasco, Hubby kept his foot on her leash.  Can’t have crazy labs running around terrorizing people who are trying to get better!  So much for trying to make them therapy dogs!

Night

And finally, it has nothing to do with the rehab story, but I took this picture of my back yard one night not too long ago.  I thought it was cool.

Thanks again to our hosts, 2 Brown Dawgs and Ruckus the Eskie, join us tomorrow for Follow-Up Friday, where I answer questions, post some of my favorite comments and wrap up my week!

Gawking Around the Christmas Tree and Advent Calendar for Dog Lovers Day 17

December 17, 2013 By Jodi

When you have a dog like Delilah, every day life is challenging.  Why just Sunday she ate a stick of butter off the counter.  Organic butter!  Yo that stuff is not cheap. She ate like a dollar’s worth of butter.  In one sitting…..er standing.

Holidays can be extra challenging because of all the additional food and when you throw in a Christmas tree and presents, well you best be bringing your A game to make sure everything stays exactly as you want it.  Cause this dog has skills.  Mad skills. She’s brazen and fast and goes after what she wants.

The first year we put up a tree we lost a number of ornaments.  My baby elf.  Oh my baby elf.  Hand-crafted by me over 30 years ago, my special ornaments always went on the tree first.  And then Delilah ate an elf.  So we stopped putting my treasures up.

And forget about putting presents under the tree, Delilah likes to unwrap packages and then chew up what’s inside.

We’ve had to simplify our tree.  This year, I went totally basic.

Christmas Tree As you can see, Sampson could care less about the tree, the ornaments or anything that might be underneath it.

Ornaments I stuck with simple ribbons, crystals and a few glass ornaments and so far, Delilah hasn’t even looked at it.

TREE Until a present came in the mail yesterday.  So we’ve gated off our tree.

Hubby took our fireplace screen and arranged the furniture just so.  But it doesn’t keep a girl from window shopping. 😉

How are your pups around the tree, do they bother the tree, ornaments, presents?  What creative ways do you use to help keep your sanity around the holidays?

I Thought Delilah was THE Diva and Advent Calendar for Dog Lovers Day 16

December 16, 2013 By Jodi

As you know Sampson had surgery last week to remove a Sebaceous Cyst and a fatty tumor.  The Vet sent him home with a C.O.N.E.

You know, one of those horrible plastic collars that keep dogs from scratching or digging at something they shouldn’t.  Most dog folks refer to it as The Cone of Shame.  Why, I don’t know.  Is it because most times the dog has done something (s)he shouldn’t have which resulted in an unexpected trip to the Vet?

It breaks my heart to see him in the cone, so as soon as we got in the car, we took it off.  As long as we are home to monitor him, he doesn’t need to wear it.

BUT when I leave for work in the morning, I have to put the cone on.  I feel like such a schmuck when I put it on him, even though I know it’s for his own good.

I called the Vet to check and they said he has to stay in the cone when we can’t keep an eye on him and he has to stay in it until he has his stitches out, which is Friday!

Friday!

So every morning, just before I leave for work, I put the cone on.  I’m quickly learning that not only do I have a Diva in the house, I also have a Drama King.

This was the look I received on Wednesday.

This was the look I received on Wednesday.

I’m not sure if cones are supposed to be THIS BIG, but it seemed HUGE on him.  And really we only want to prevent him from rubbing the side of his face, so we decided to cut the cone down.

Hubby drew a line and I cut just above it.

This was the drama face I got on Thursday.

We decided that I needn’t cut it any shorter than this, so you can still see the black line.

Cutting the cone down didn’t make him feel any better about wearing it.

This was the face I got on Friday.

And when that didn’t work, he got really desperate.

Hang in there buddy, Friday’s coming!

Has your puppy had to wear a cone?   How did you deal?  Did you get the drama too?
