You Make Me Smile – February 16, 2014

February 16, 2014 By Jodi

You make me smile (or laugh) the silly, funny, loving things my dogs do that put a smile on my face or a laugh on my lips every day.

Delilah, the way you do everything you can to avoid taking a selfie with me.

Selfie You make me smile.

Have you taken a selfie with your dog?  Sampson’s pretty good with it, but Delilah….well you can see for yourself.

Does your dog like it or not?

Sound off in the comments.

Note to Self

February 10, 2014 By Jodi

Most nights Sampson and Delilah sleep through the night, but there are those rare occasions when someone refused to potty before bed, or someone isn’t feeling well, or just gets a wild hair across their ass and wants to go outside.

Usually it’s Sampson.

He knows who will get up with him too.  Does he go over to the Daddy’s side of the bed?

Oh No.

Not the Daddy.  It’s always the Mama.

He starts by getting down off the bed and then putting a heavy paw (THUNK) on the mattress in front of me.  Usually that’s enough to wake me, if it’s not he changes tactics and puts his head on the bed and I wake up to him staring at me.

YO! Get yo' ass up, I gotta go!!

YO! Get yo’ ass up, I gotta go!!

Most nights when someone wants out, I get up open the door and stand huddled near the fireplace waiting for the wanderer to come back to the fold.

But not when it’s Sampson and he’s on restricted activity due to a partial ACL tear and isn’t allowed to be running or jumping.

No. The dedicated Mama gets up puts on coat and boots, grabs a flashlight and heads out into the cold.

Which is how I found myself wandering the hill in my backyard at 4:30 one morning a couple of weeks ago.

It’s amazing the things you think of when jolted from a sound sleep in a warm bed to a cold and snowy hilltop.

  • I guess I don’t know my yard as well as I thought I did.  (This as a bunch of small saplings slap me in the face because my head is down so I don’t step in dog shit.)  Note to self, start picking up after your dogs!
  • Why don’t we have a turnout pen like Mr. and Mrs. Taleteller?  Then I wouldn’t be stumbling around this yard at 4:30 in the morning.  What exactly IS a turnout pen?  How big is it?  I wonder if we could make one?  Note to self, figure out a way to make the dogs potty in one area of the yard.
  • Why didn’t I think to grab a poop bag (as we finally get to the reason WHY we’re outside at 4:30 in the morning.)  I’m never going to find this in the daylight.  Delilah will find it first.   Note to self, might be wise to keep a roll of poop bags in your coat pocket.
  • What would happen if I slipped and fell out here?  Who would know?  Would Hubby look outside if he got up and I wasn’t in the house?  Or would I simply lie here and freeze to death?  Like a frozen fucking Heat Miser.   Note to self, remember to grab your cell phone when you take the dog out in the middle of the night.

  • Crap!  Who planted that tree?  Note to self, it might be wise to clear some of these little trees out.
  • What would Sampson do if I fell out here?  Would he sit at the door and waiting for Hubby to get up, or would he bark and raise a ruckus?  Would I still be alive when Hubby finds me?  Note to self, it might be wise to tack a note somewhere that says, “check snow banks first.”
  • Are those eyes over there in those bushes?  Note to self, maybe your pepper blaster would be handy to bring with you.

Note to self, maybe it’s a good idea to make SURE the dogs potty before calling it a night.

Mixed-Up Monday – January 27, 2014

January 27, 2014 By Jodi

This was supposed to be my Follow-Up Friday post, but I got lazy and took the day off and so here is my follow-up from last week.

You Make Me Smile – January 19, 2014

Animal Couriers said, “Our greeting is two dog heads alternately popping through the cat flap door and our boy George trying to stick his biggest toy through the opening. Never fails to make us laugh.”

I’m pretty sure that would make me laugh too.

Frankie and Ernie said, “We Scream at them saying we are HAPPY to see you.”

LOL Frankie and Ernie, you guys crack me up.

The Words No Pet Parent Wants to Hear

The comments left on this post totally reinforced my belief that the village of Blogville, is the absolute best.  Your love and support make everything so much easier.  And I forgot to mention JoAnn from Sand Spring Chesapeakes, she was one of my other vet tech friends who got tagged in those videos.

Jana Rade left a link which is probably the easiest explanation I’ve seen about Degenerative Myleopathy.

Sugar said, “Just an advise from mom, don’t “google” so much.”

Googling is the absolute worst thing to do, yet it’s always the first thing I do.  Your mom is right Sugar, we just need to stop.

Genevieve said, “Why did they do this to you? Why did you do this to us!??”

I’m sorry I did that to you!  I really tried in at the end to leave you a clue that all was not lost.  If I thought anybody would have read a post that was over 1500 words long, I would have kept going!

The Blessing of an Ear Infection

Pouty

You say it’s for my own good, but I don’t see any good in it.

Jana Rade asked, “Did you consider doing the conservative management with a brace support?”

We have an appointment with the Holistic Vet on Thursday and I will discuss with him as well as with my own Vet, I’ve heard mixed reviews as to whether the brace is more of a hinderance or a help, so I’ll keep my options open.  Rest assured any decision we make will have much agonizing on my part.

Houndstooth said, “It’s funny how a matter of perspective can make a diagnosis seem so much better! Normally, getting a diagnosis about a torn ACL is pretty tough, but after hearing your dog has DM first, it sounds pretty darned great!”

I totally agree!

Kirsten asked, “Can he do some crossword puzzles to tire his brain out?”

Oh how I wish he could!  We did play a little scent game one night and I know I need to do more to help tire his brain out.

Lexy said, “Though wouldn’t it be nice to be able to explain to a dog that this sudden onset of lame/slow/short walks is to help him heal?”

From your lips.   It would still be tough on him, but at least if he understood the end goal was that he would be able to run freely again, perhaps his restrictions wouldn’t be so hard.

Five Pills in One Gulp

Dawn asked, “Would something like the Kinn Kudose work for his pills?”

That’s a pretty cool product Dawn!  I had never heard of it, and I bet it would be amazing for some dogs, but for me the Ricotta is working so I’m sticking with it. 😉

Carol Bryant asked, “Are you coming to BlogPaws in May?”

Right now it doesn’t look that way Carol, Vegas is a lot more expensive for me then D.C.

Thursday Barks and Bytes – Coyote Ugly

Genevieve asked, “Could it have been a little rock salt that made Sampson limp?”

It absolutely could have been rock salt, it could have been the chemicals they put on the road, it could have been a piece of ice, it could have been the cold.  I’m not sure, all I know was I wasn’t willing to take the risk that it could be something more.

Thank you all so much for joining Thursday Barks and Bytes Blog Hop, you guys are awesome and made the inaugural hop such an amazing success!  You are the best!!  Come back Thursday to see who is the lucky winner of the Amazon Gift Card!
