Why Delilah’s NOT Getting Coal in Her Stocking, Even Though She’s Mostly Naughty

December 23, 2014 By Jodi

Friday night I was having a conversation with one of my vets regarding Delilah’s liver levels.  Despite the seriousness of the conversation Dr. Atz and I had a good laugh.

I had said something along the lines of this dog eats anything…stuff in the road, things in the yard, any food that drops to the floor.  And Dr. Atz laughed and said, “So Delilah’s probably getting coal in her stocking this year?”  I laughed along with him and said, Delilah is definitely getting coal in her stocking.

Again? You're talking about me again? Don't you have other things to talk about?

Again? You’re talking about me again? Don’t you have other things to talk about?

Except she won’t.

I know, I know.  This is the same dog that ate the entire box of packing peanuts, the box of bisquick, baking chocolate, supplements, raisins, dog poop, a pound of corned beef, destroyed a can of Salmon oil, two Misto bottles and that’s where my memory fails me.

But if you look beyond that, she’s a very sweet, loving dog.  The way she mimics Sampson to get the attention she wants, the way she insists she’s a lap dog, despite the fact that she refuses to curl up on your lap, the way she shoves her head between your legs in order to feel safe, all of these sweet and loving things outweigh all the naughty, taxing, challenging behaviors.

Now what? Bob made it look so easy.

How can you say I’m not a lap dog?  Look, I fit.

Besides, she’d probably eat the coal and who can afford THAT vet bill?

Tune in tomorrow for the 12 Days of Christmas Delilah style.

If It’s Not the Dumb Ass Dog Owner…It’s Their Guest

December 16, 2014 By Jodi

When Sampson, Delilah and I walk the neighborhood, I always have my eyes sharp.  I’m on the lookout for someone walking, whether it’s by themselves or with their dog.  I’m also watching for  squirrels, chipmunks, wild turkey, deer, cats, cars and mice.  Yes mice.  One windy morning Delilah perked up over what I thought was a leaf.  I don’t know who was more surprised when the mouse ran right under her nose, her or me.

Anyone watching me would think I was either drunk, slightly off my rocker or both.  I know which yards have the e-fences where the dogs lurk in the back yard only to come charging out when you approach.  Or the yard that doesn’t clean up after their dog and has huge piles on the lawns.

Typically I cross the road to avoid the potential hazards, with the exception of the lawn with the disgusting piles.  The house across from the yard with the piles has a dog on an e-fence.  Gretchen is very excited to see another dog and keeps her ears sharp, I usually hear her well before I see her.

Such was the case on Sunday.  We were approaching Gretchen’s house and I had my eyes and ears sharp, listening for her.  I heard her, she was inside.  I think there was a little party at her house because there was a few cars out front and the house was all lit up.

I walked along the street, the dogs beside me walking along the edge of Gretchen’s yard.  Just as we passed the front door, it opened and one of the little guests let Gretchen out.  Here she comes tearing across the lawn to greet the dogs.

I was quick.  I moved out into the street bringing the dogs with me and then struggled getting Sampson away as he wanted to greet Gretchen as much as she wanted to greet him.

Meanwhile the little guest kept calling to Gretchen who of course ignored him.  I finally got Sampson a safe distance past the house, cursing and mumbling under my breath the entire time.

Did you see that? It was SO close.

Did you see that? I was SO close.

Once I got home I changed my pants and relaxed. 😉

How do you handle the situation with guests and your dogs?  Do you allow your guests to let your dogs out, or do you handle it differently?

When You Have a Dog Like Delilah

December 1, 2014 By Jodi

When you have a dog like Delilah, holidays can be challenging.  Because siriusly, any time you’re working with food, Delilah has to be there.

You know, just in case you drop a crumb.

We hosted Thanksgiving this year and I can’t tell you how many times I said, “Get out of the kitchen” on Thursday.  After about the 10th time, I put her in the bedroom and put a gate across the door and finished my food preparations.

When everything was ready, I let her out again.  Now the fun begins.  Keeping her from stealing food off the table.

We had 11 people for dinner and the table only seats six, so we added a little card table.  This means the food can’t all fit on the table, so we used the breakfast bar for the dinner food and as soon as dinner was over, we cleaned up the food and put it away.

But then came dessert.  The dessert foods went out on the pool table which is a little bit taller than the breakfast bar or table.  Did that stop Delilah?

Let me just check to make sure you've cleaned that table thoroughly.

Let me just check to make sure you’ve cleaned that table thoroughly.

Yes, yes she is THAT bold.  And she did it right in front of me too.

I don’t know about you, but I want to get as much as possible out of my turkey.  So as soon as everyone had packed up their goodies to take home, I put the turkey in the stock pot to start my turkey soup.

I'm from the health department...yes, it looks like you've done this correctly.

I’m from the health department…yes, it looks like you’ve done this correctly.

Remember last week when Jackie Bouchard asked, “So… how does she get stuff out of the sink?? Is she that tall? Does she jump up on the counter?”

There you have it Jackie, the stove is no higher than my sink.  I swear this dog could walk on two legs.  Truthfully I was more worried about her burning her paw, then her licking the pot but it didn’t seem to phase her.

Did you remember today kicks off the Advent Calendar for Dogs over on Kol’s Notes?  I’m super excited to be joining, Jodi, Jen, Dawn and Jan for this gigantic giveaway!!
