My All Star is on the D.L.

September 20, 2012 By Jodi

On December 1st, this little blog will be two years old.  Back in January I set out the goals I had for this blog for its second year of existence.

One of these goals was to post for 366 consecutive days, at which point I will have written one post per day for two full years (with the exception of the day my granddaughter was born when I just totally spaced it.)

Most of the ideas for posts come from the dogs, specifically things they do or things we encounter on our walks.

Coming into September I felt fairly confident we could accomplish this particular goal. Come on, I can see the finish line from here!

Oh there are other goals that probably won’t get accomplished but two full years of consecutive posting was a given.

Today with only 72 posts left to go, I have to tell you I’m a bit nervous.

My All-Star is on the Disabled List.

Yes, you read that right, Sampson, the Golden Boy, the one whom the sun rises and sets upon,  does not have a lick granuloma (at least not in the traditional sense of the word.).

After he woke up limping on Tuesday I knew he had to go to the Vet.

I fixed Delilah a bone filled with pumpkin and loaded him into the car.

Will it be much longer mom? I’m not getting enough rubbies.

Our vet (Dr. Soutter) was on vacation this week (why oh why didn’t she give me her cell phone number?)  So instead we got to see Dr. B, who was instrumental in helping Delilah when she was having her episodes.

After a quick look at his paw, Dr. B. decided it would be smart to do a skin scraping, to make sure it wasn’t a yeast infection or some other skin condition.

It wasn’t particularly comfortable but he tolerated it well.

She examined the scraped skin under a microscope and determined it was not a skin condition

Then she started touching and moving his paw.  Most of the manipulations were okay, but there were a couple of times that it hurt him.  We decided it would be smart to take an X-ray, if it didn’t show anything we’d still have a baseline for the future.

Dr. B. said Sampson was such a good boy she wouldn’t need to anesthetize him. We were asked to wait while the X-ray area was readied.

Did you hear that? I’ve forgotten all the noises you hear in the city.

I asked if I could go with Sampson to document his X-ray but was informed the area was tight and they had a dog up on the table getting his teeth cleaned.

That was easy mom, you had nothing to worry about.

After his very thorough examination and his X-rays, Dr. B determined that my poor, sweet punkin has a soft-tissue injury.

In layman’s terms, the ligament in his left front paw is sore, she gave us some medicine (Meloxicam) and said he has to take it easy.

Specifically no running or jumping for a month.

A MONTH!

A month without squirrel, chipmunk or deer chases!  A month without running through the field, and rolling over dogs in his effort to reach humans.

A month without the mama getting fodder for blog posts.

My All-Star is side-lined and we’re in the homestretch!

Thankfully I still have my Designated Hitter, who never fails to provide me with engaging and entertaining stories.

What do you think?  Will my D.H. step up to the plate and save my skin? Do you think I can make my goal of two full years of posting or do you think I’ll fall short?

W.T.F./Whoo Hoo Wednesday (9-19-12)

September 19, 2012 By Jodi

Please note this post is not meant to make light of the deeds described here, only to make fun of, ridicule, bully and just plain beat the shit out of the idiots who commit these stupid acts.

Van Dyke Cafe′ Waitress Mauled By Dog on Lincoln Road, Miami Beach, FL

If you didn’t read the post, long story short a woman brought her unfriendly Cane Corso dog to a dog-friendly area and a waitress was bit, resulting in over 300 stitches and seven hours of surgery.

I’ll hit the bits that stood out to me, causing me to shake my head and say, W.T.F!

A) The owner knows her dog is not friendly and yet she still brings the dog into a situation that will only stress the dog more

B) The unfriendly dog is being handled by a teenager

C) She allows a waitress to bend over into the dog’s face.

You WHAT?

W.T.F. kind of brain was she thinking with, one bought used on the black market?

That right there is an irresponsible owner and that dog should have been removed from her care.

Strangely enough the city officials were unaware of the attack.  How the eff does THAT happen?

Are we talking about Miami Beach?  The Miami Beach in Florida?  The Miami Beach that is part of Miami-Dade County?

The same Miami-Dade County that has a Pit Bull BAN? But they didn’t know about this?

That’s a double W.T.F. my friends.

 Did she really say that?

A witness to the attack said, “People can’t have dogs like that in public without protection on their mouths.”

To that I say, “People who have no knowledge of why dogs bite should not be allowed to own a dog, nor should they be allowed out in public without protection on THEIR mouths.”

And yes, you can quote me on that!

The Forgotten Pet Advocates, Houston TX

This just made me sad.

A dog came across my facebook page saying he’d been in the shelter for four years.  I wanted to post the link but wasn’t sure how that would work being a facebook page and all, so I googled the name of the organization and found that they have a number of dogs that have been in the shelter for more than a year!

So share, share, share.

Sharing is caring.

And sharing helps save lives.

Which segues right into our next portion of this post.

Whoo Hoo

Back before Just Toby confiscated her blog, Donna from the blog f/k/a  Donna and the Dogs shared a photo of a sweet Lab named Simon.

At the time Donna was considering adding Simon to her pack but the fit just wasn’t quite right.  So she shared Simon on her blog.

She had a footer on the blog that had a picture of Simon and a link to adopt him.

WHOO HOOO as of September 8th, Simon has been adopted!

Donna, modestly claims that her blog didn’t assist in his adoption but I disagree!  Even though his new family found him on Petfinder, they could have heard about him and gone searching.

Never under estimate your part in the Universe.

That wraps it up for this post, any W.T.F’s or Whoo Hoo’s you’d like to share?

Pumple Shots

September 18, 2012 By Jodi

I have a very small kitchen.  I can almost reach from the sink across the kitchen and grab a pan from the stove.

Almost.

Our previous kitchen was HUGE.  I mean HUGE.  It was one of those old-fashion eat in kitchens.  No dining room.  Just a big kitchen.

After five years Hubby and I have adjusted to cooking in a small kitchen.  We can manage it, when it’s just the two of us.

Sometimes I’ve been heard to say, there are too many of us in the kitchen.  Considering we have two decent sized dogs and one small cat that thinks he’s a dog.

I try hard to keep the animals on the fringe of the kitchen.  They can sit right on the edge where they can catch-all the action, they just can’t enter.

What’s she cooking today? Do you think we’ll get some?

It’s a daily struggle.

But well worth the effort to save a bit of sanity (not to mention stepped on paws or tails) while working.

Seriously nothing is worse than stepping backward with a full pot of boiling pasta and hearing “MEOWWWWWWWWWWW.”

When all has gone according to plan, I like to reward the participants with a treat.  Sometimes I give them beef hearts or turkey hearts, but some days you want to give them a little something special.

I call these Pumple Shots.

Here’s what you’ll need:

A half and half mixture of canned pumpkin (if you’re industrious and like to make your own pumpkin good for you!) and unsweetened applesauce

a small muffin tin, or something similar

What a cute little tray. (Notice the lab inspector in the bottom right of the shot. She was there to assure nothing tainted went into any of her treats. It’s important to have a good quality control inspector.)

Mix the pumpkin and the applesauce together, if your freezing container is bigger than mine, feel free to layer instead of mixing.  It matters not.

Fill the container with the Pumple mix and freeze.

That’s gonna make some crazy lab pretty woofing happy,

I got these cute little forms at the Animal Rescue site.

The depth of this mold surprised me, when I pulled the treat out they were HUGE.

My hand is on the small side, but these were big treats!

It mattered not.  Delilah had hers in her mouth BEFORE I could snap the picture.   But I would say they both enjoyed them.

I’m not sure about this mom, give me a minute to figure it out.

The remaining treats went on a plate, which I covered with foil and stuck back in the freezer.

I mixed these up last night and froze them overnight and it was perfect.

The mold I used was made out of silicone so the treats just popped right out, but it you are using a tin mold, you might want to add just a touch of non-stick spray.

Do your pups like frozen treats?  What kinds of frozen treats do you make?

Do you feel like hopping today?

This is the Tasty Tuesday blog hop, hosted by Kol’s Notes and Sugar, the Golden Retriever.
