Follow-Up Friday – January 30, 2015

January 30, 2015 By Jodi

Welcome to this week’s edition of Follow-Up Friday, the post where I highlight reader’s comments, answer questions and generally just wrap up my week.

You Make Me Smile – January 25, 2015

Dog uses pillow like a person

No wonders peeps like sleeping on pillows.

Emma said, “Sampson, you are a funny boy! Bailie and I both give hugs and if we aren’t done and Mom tries to move our paws, we hug tighter! Bailie also sleeps on a pillow in bed sometimes.”

I think that’s super cool Emma.  My dogs don’t do a lot of hugging, I hope you’ll have one for me in Nashville.

Rebecca said, “What a great picture. We would play a game with Andy our standard poodle by throwing a couch pillow down on the floor and no matter where we threw it Andy would go over and lay down next to it and put his head on the pillow.”

Now that’s a neat trick!  I’ve never heard of that, did you have a command for it, or did he just naturally do it?

Jan said, “Dogs have lived with humans for so many thousands of years they think they are (superior) humans…”

Sometimes I do feel they are superior.  They have such a capacity for love and forgiveness, which is definitely a trait all humans could use.

Sherrie Petrie said, “This year for Christmas instead of giving our girls a bunch of toys we gave them each a soft cozy blanket from Petsmart (some of the $ goes to their charities) and with two of them being Chihuahuas it is so funny to watch them make their, as hubby puts it burrito nests at nite for their pre-bedtime naps. One will make a cave so all you can see are ears and a nose. Or they will whine until “daddy” actually wraps them up like a burrito and tucks them in until they get too hot and then they make what we call “the birds nest” and rest their nose on top of the rim.”

That sounds adorable!  Do you video it?  I would probably watch it over and over.

Delilah the Defender

Funny things dogs do.

Are you on about that again?

Sue said, ” My Lucy was the shop dog at my antique shop and greeted everyone with joy. However, one day when she and Tucker were home alone, a neighbor stopped by. He later reported he’d never seen such a big, furious dog before in his life. Lucy had jumped up on the glass door and went nuts. She took her home guarding duties very seriously. (And Tucker? The neighbor said he was sitting a few feet away from Lucy and wagging his tail.) These days it is quiet Rudy who really does not like strange men. Why? I dunno.”

Oh Sue, they sound exactly like my two.  I’ve seen Delilah with her face mashed up against the glass, teeth gnashing, barking furiously.  Sampson just wags his tail.

Blueberry’s Human said, “Wait…you don’t have to pump your own gas????? I’m movin’ to Jersey!”

Not only do you not have to pump your own gas, I’m pretty sure it’s against the law.  AND New Jersey isn’t all that far from me.

Hawk aka Brown Dog said, “Oh, when something is seriously threatening I growl so softly only my Human can hear. If I’m leaping and barking at the door I’m just announcing that someone has arrived.”

YOU are a very well trained dog Hawk, my dogs aren’t nearly that good.

Jan K said, “Luke is exactly like Delilah, though he backs off from people most of the time. If they ignore him he is usually OK. He will warm up to people, but it takes a long time. He’s kind of a “bark first, ask questions later” kind of dog.”

Delilah is the same way!!  It takes her a LONG time to warm up too.  She’s really very aloof with almost everyone.  In fact, I think this year she’s really begun to warm up to my mom and sister and it’s been almost 8 years!

A Wet Towel for Delilah, Some More Xanax for Me

Hives on dogs

It’s not a fancy ‘doo, it’s an ugly, itchy mess.

Sand Spring Chesapeakes said, “Holy cow girlfriend, what next???? Poor girl, I can’t believe she wasn’t itching herself raw with all those hives. Yes defiantly a allergic reaction but from what??? Any thing unusual or different she did before that all happened? Glad the benadryl worked!”

I’ve learned not to ask that question, “What next?” LOL Generally the universe has an answer for that one.

Daisy said, “OMG! That would totally freak me out.”

I think the look on my face would have been priceless.

Emma said, “Where do these weird things come from and why do they only happen on weekends when the vet is closed or during a blizzard?

I don’t know why it always happens like that.  I’m just grateful I took her to the vet before the big storm hit.

2 Brown Dawgs said, “How scary. I wonder what caused the reaction?”

From what I read on Pet36o an allergic reaction occurs about 20 minutes after ingestion.  I noticed the first hive after her breakfast and the second one after dinner.  My best guess is the joint supplement I was using.  I’ve been told that SO many pets are on supplements with shellfish in it and an allergic reaction for dogs from shellfish is rare, but to me that doesn’t mean it CAN’T happen.  She is a rare one herself.

Frankie and Ernie said, “OMD that picture looked like you had a FURRY CROWN on your head…”

I was thinking corn row, but I’ll go with Furry Crown. 🙂

Lauranne asked, “How do you not have xanax on a permanent drip link to your arm??”

Is that a thing?  I need to get one.  In the meantime….I guess I’ll have some more whiskey in my coffee.

Sherrie Petrie said, “my experience with animals is one of the biggies is grains and dairy. Try a grain free diet for Delilah and see if that helps.”

Thanks Sherrie, we are grain free already and her dairy is limited.  I’m really thinking it’s the shellfish.

My Dog is a Doofus

Frankie and Ernie said, “WE think it is GRAND that the Doofus is so Friendly and Loves Peeps so much… It is like being a Pawsonal GREETER… butt BETTER than the ones they used to have at Walmart…”

Oh Frankie and Ernie, you always make me laugh.  I love how you called him the Doofus.

Rachele Baker, DVM said, “It sounds like Sampson just has a lot of love in his heart to share.”

You’re very sweet.  He really is such a loving guy.  He’s out to win everyone over.

Jan said, “Sampson is the dog version of a politician or maybe a beloved statesman or possibly a used car salesman.”

I’ll go with beloved….politicians or used car salesman….I’m not so sure. 🙂

Daisy says, “I think they’re just sociable and interested. At least that’s what I tell myself. ;)”

I like it Daisy.

Well folks, that’s it for me.  Thanks for hanging in there and have a great weekend.

A Wet Towel for Delilah, Some More Xanax for Me

January 27, 2015 By Jodi

Yesterday morning I noticed a hive over Delilah’s right eye.  She has a tendency to get a large welt when she’s bit by a bug, so naturally, I assumed something had bit her.  Since we were forecast for a blizzard I had to run out to the store, and when I got home I checked her eye and the hive seemed like it might have moved slightly and her eye was a bit more swollen.

I called the vet.

By the time we arrived at our 4:20 appointment, the bulk of the swelling around her eye was gone.  The vet could see a little swollen area and said to keep an eye on her and if it got worse to give her some Benadryl.  She said the Benadryl might make her tired.

I laughed.

Just before dinner I noticed she had a hive over her left eye.

Dog with hive

Does this arrow make my eye look puffy?

I gave her some Benadryl with her dinner, then Hubby and I ate ours and watched a show.  While we were watching the show Delilah climbed up on my lap looking for some attention.  I had noticed she was a tad bit clingy so I held her and rubbed her until she got down.

After the show was over I got up to do dishes and of course Delilah came with me.  When I looked at her under the kitchen light, this is what I saw.

Hives on dogs

It’s not a fancy new ‘doo, it’s an itchy, ugly mess.

It’s like she just went POOF.  The poor little thing was covered with hives.  On her nose, around her eyes and all over the top of her head.  She looked like her hair was standing up all over her head.

The vet gave us enough Benadryl for three to four days and said if I noticed the hive getting worse to start her on the Benadryl and keep her on it, to make sure we get whatever is in her system out.

I placed another call to the vet, but because we are in the middle of a blizzard, I didn’t hear back last night.   So of course I did the one thing you aren’t supposed to do.

I consulted Dr. Google.  I know, I know.  BUT this time I found the Pet360 site, which basically said it’s an allergic reaction.  Not the best news in the world, because how the hell do you determine what the allergen is?  BUT it was enough to help me feel a wee bit better.

Meanwhile I message Jodi Chick who suggested I wipe her down with a wet towel, in case it was a contact allergy.

Delilah was curled up sleeping on her bed, but I woke her up to wipe her down.  I wiped her all over with a wet towel and the hives seemed to have gone down quite a bit.

Funny, but the Benadryl worked with her, she went right back to sleep.  Me on the other hand…

Someone remind me to get a refill on my Xanax today.

Special thanks to my friend, One Person’s View for giving me the title for this post.

Follow-Up Friday – January 23, 2015

January 23, 2015 By Jodi

Welcome to this week’s edition of Follow-Up Friday, the post where I highlight reader’s comments, answer questions and generally just wrap up my week.

You Make Me Laugh – January 18, 2015

Funny things dogs do.

Make sure you get my best side.

Cupcake says, “There’s no such thing as a blooper. Mom calls these “the first ten pictures before the one she needs.””

Jan K said, “She’s such a nut! No, it’s not a blooper, it’s perfect!”

Monika said, “This dog has so much character, especially in the way she looks at you and the camera. :)”

Lauranne said, “She would make a great model – she manages to get so much of her personality across in one still photo. Please go down the modeling route with her – I can just imagine the posts!!”

Awe you guys, you are so sweet.  She really does have a lot of character, I just wish I could capture it every time.

Bad Dogs…

Linda Moore said, “I had a beagle that did the same thing. They have pills for it. They make the shit taste bad. Did you read that? How shit is made to taste worse, I don’t know! But those pills must be crazy gross!”

O.M.G.  Yes, I read that and it made me laugh!!  I’m sorry for not linking to your site, but when I clicked on it, nothing would load. 🙁

Sophie said, “This is an ongoing problem with Gus. We tried everything, including the bad tasting stuff from the vet that you sprinkle on the potty.”

My philosophy is if I have to sprinkle something on the potty, I might just as well pick it up. 🙂

Emma said, “One of the first things Bailie learned was drop it, leave it. ”

It’s a great command.  I’ve been working Delilah on “leave it.” We started it on our walks when we are passing other dogs.  She’s doing very well with it and has gotten to the point where she sees another dog and she will immediately look to me for her treat.  I’m hoping this will translate to the poop and when she sees an enticing pile, she will look to me.  Fingers crossed. But you have to see the poop to tell her to leave it. Hehehe

Lauranne said, “Thankfully (and I can’t believe I am starting this sentence with that word but..) thankfully Mity only eats his own poo not other dogs (and yes I nearly typed people, which is a whole other level of ugh!)”

BWA HA HA There are so many things I can’t believe I type.

Michelle said, “My Foxy was a recovering poop addict. She didn’t discriminate either – she’d eat her poop, her brother’s poop, cat poop, whatever she found. I tried all the store bought so called solutions as well different home remedies (feeding her pineapple so her poop would taste bad). The only thing that worked was keeping her on a leash & telling her to leave it & drop it. As she got older, she had a few relapses (as most addicts do) but mostly cut the habit.”

Both my dogs get pineapple every single day.  We’ve also used many of the ‘remedies’ with no success.  You are right, there will probably be relapses but if we can miss most of it, I’ll be happy.

Jan K asked, “Are you sure you ever want to get a beagle? Because that is like their favorite thing to eat. ”

LOL I love beagles, but I’ve forgotten the gross things they like to eat.

Elaine said, “Luckily, Haley doesn’t eat dog poop but rabbit poop must be a pretty tasty treat for her! Isn’t it funny how some walks are just perfect and other walks make you feel like you should have just stayed at home on the couch?”

With these two, most days I wish I’d stayed on the couch!  Especially when someone eats poop. LOL

Blueberry’s Human asked, “Does Delilah enjoy holding things in her mouth? Maybe you could train her to hold a favorite toy on walks so she is less likely to taste everything she sees? ”

If she held something in her mouth, how would she eat poop? 😉  Seriously, I don’t think I could get her to carry something for an entire walk.

Level With Me

Sue said, “Wish I had some words of wisdom. Just so disappointed that Delilah’s problem has not gone away :-(”

You and me both.  But I’m not giving up, I’m just not made that way.

Retro Rover said, ” Ive never heard of allergies causing liver issues in dogs, though Id be curious to know. As you know our Ping has elevated liver values. Currently her liver values are good but her cholesterol is sky high so we are working on figuring out whats causing that and if its liver related.”

Check out my answer below (under Daisy’s question).

Pamela said, “I’ve been very lucky and have not yet had a dog with allergies (knock wood). But I can tell you I’ve gotten excellent results working with a holistic vet. …Don’t you wish she could talk?”

I like the holistic vet myself but so far the things he’s given me haven’t helped.  As for the talking, only if she wasn’t sassing me, or talking non-stop.  Can you hear her, “It’s 9 o’clock, it’s snack time, you know that right? Did I mention it’s 9′ o’clock?”

Blueberry’s Human asked, “What exactly does the cleanse entail? ”

It’s basically a combination of supplements and vitamins that you give the dog for a month or so, then keep up with some of the supplements.

Slimdoggy said, “You might try testing it yourself first. We completely cut all proteins for Jack – gave him single protein (salmon) everything, food, treats, etc. That cleared up his allergic reactions and his pre-IBD. Chicken is in EVERYTHING so it’s not surprising many dog’s grow an intolerance too it. Try cutting it completely.”

Thank you.  Chicken necks is part of their diet, so I’ll be definitely be talking to my vet about this.

Jana Rade said, “There is a blood test for food allergies in dogs too. Different vets have different opinions on this. We did it with Jasmine and than ran with the results. It worked out well for her.”

I will check with my vet about this as well.  Thank you.

Daisy said, ” My daughter (especially) and I have food allergies too, and our diets have changed exponentially because of what we found out through blood tests. The result is that we feel so much better and many symptoms have cleared up (some things I didn’t even realize were symptoms!), so we know it’s right for us.

I have food allergies/sensitivities as well and I know they cause inflammation in my body, and when I eliminate them I feel so much better.  I’ve been told her liver has some inflammation (hence the elevated levels) and that’s what I’m wondering if it could be a food allergy.

My Devious Mind

The mess in my park.

Come gather ’round the fire boys and girls.

Sheena said, “Make sure Chet wears the “Jason” mask!! Lol! And make sure you call me……I’d LOVE to help!!!”

Sisters, you have to love them.  She ALWAYS has my back. xoxo

2 Brown Dawgs said, “Well you could sure freak the kids out with your prank, but do kids these days really freak out about much?…I guess Blog Paws is doing things differently this year. Instead of doing a presentation to a group, you will be sitting down one-on-one with bloggers? So how long is the meeting and how many will you see?”

I doubt the kids would freak out, but it might be fun to try.

As for Blog Paws, I will be seeing 9 people for 10 minutes each.  This is something new they are trying.  I will have a basic presentation but hope to be able to offer some unique advice based on a questionnaire I will have the fill out.

Daisy said, “I’d leave some fake blood behind splattered around their favorite site in case they come back to check things out in daylight. (I’m a writer too!) ;)”

A girl after my own heart. 🙂

Blueberry’s Human said, “One time, when I was less old than I am now, my younger brother and I were in the desert (during the day) and we decided it would be fun to start a fire in one of the designated barbecue grills (we were stone cold sober, btw). Then we thought it would be even more fun to throw various things in there to watch them catch on fire (plastic, etc). We never realized that extreme wind plus a roaring fire near a dry desert tree would equal things getting out of control. The tree nearest the grill caught fire SO FAST. Thankfully, there were some old people in RVs nearby and they graciously put out the fire with jugs of water.”

OMG that must have terrified you.  I am pretty sure these kids don’t really know what could happen if they were careless.

That’s it for me peeps, thanks for all the awesome comments, and have a wonderful weekend!
