Follow-Up Friday – May 2, 2014

May 2, 2014 By Jodi

Welcome to this week’s edition of Follow-Up Friday, the post where I highlight reader’s comments, answer questions and generally wrap up my week.

Some Dogs Just Walk Bow-Legged

You want me to do WHAT?

You want me to do WHAT?

2 Brown Dawgs said, “He looks so worried about that water tread mill, but I know it will help him.”

I know he did.  It about broke my heart, but the good thing is that he wasn’t panicking about it, and he actually did quite well.

Rebecca said, “I’ve used a ladder laid on a bricks (to get that height off the ground) for Teach in preparation for agility training. That is very similar to Cavalletis but for Sampson the rungs of the ladder may be to close together.”

That’s a great idea, but I think you are right.  The rungs would be too close together for him.

Sand Spring Chesapeakes asked, “Norman loved the water treadmill cuz she put peanut butter on the front is that what I see on the picture?”

No, there is no peanut butter on there.  In fact, he cannot even touch the door because a bar is in his way.  I think you may be seeing the leash.  I am standing in front of the door holding his leash.

Cupcake said, “Sampson, your face says it all. “What in the world are these demented lunatics up to???””

This was only his second time on the treadmill so I’m not really sure what he thought about that!

Jan K said, “I think you have that DIY instinct of a lot of native New Englanders…I wouldn’t have been surprised if you DID improvise the underwater treadmill.”

Well thank you Jan and now you’ve got me thinking…..

Jen said, “I do small hills with Sherman to try and help keep his muscle mass up but I might have to give this a try!!!”

We are smack dab in the middle of a hill and so he goes up hill at least twice a day.  I’d like to do more, but right now I can’t.

Thanks for the Warning

Okay, here’s how I SHOULD have ended that post.  “Thanks for the warning is right.  Now I know where another dumb ass lives in my neighborhood.”

optimizing your images for SEO

I just don’t like surprises, that’s all. You try having someone stick their nose in YOUR ass when you aren’t expecting it. I didn’t think so.

Keri Dominguez leaves a link to a great Suzanne Clothier post and then says, “Maybe print it out and leave it in their mailbox?”

I would love to do that, but I wonder if it would really work or they’d just get offended or scoff it off?  My experience has been most people aren’t receptive to what they perceive as criticism by others.

Lauranne asked, “You did pre-warn her and nothing transpired?” and then “Have you heard of the yellow dog campaign?”

I did pre-warn her and nothing transpired but Bella did not get close enough for Delilah to react/not react.  And yes, I’ve heard of the Yellow Dog Campaign but sadly that doesn’t mean she has.

Emma asked, “Why are some people just so ignorant?”

Oh  Emma my love, if I knew the answer to that, what a wonderful world this would be.

Jenna, Mark “HuskyCrazed” Drady says, “You have such a great way of putting a comical spin on a story that angers all of us!”

Thank you.  I like to think that humor breaks the ice, if people can laugh about something, even if it’s a frustrating topic, perhaps once the laughing is done, they may be able to see another side or at the very least open a line of communication.

Roxy the Traveling Dog asked, “Why oh why, is the world full of dumb ass people? And why are they allowed to raise kids and dogs?”

Well in Jodi’s world, they would need a license for both. 😉  But Jodi doesn’t rule the world…yet. 😉

Rebekah asked, “So rude! Is there not a leash law where you live?”

Yes there is!  But without someone enforcing it, what’s a person to do?

Jan K said, “Whenever this happens with Cricket I find myself apologizing and trying to explain, but I know I shouldn’t do that.”

But why should we do that?  Their dog needs to respect our dog and their needs!

Things You Shouldn’t Tell the Physical Therapist

Jana Rade said, “Well, I believe you should tell everything to your surgeon or physical therapist. You might get the stink eye but you know what? More often than not they need to know such things.”

You’re right, I just cower at the thought of telling her. 🙁

Animal Couriers asked, “How late in the year have you had snow?”

Well it is not typical, but we have had snow in April and May.  Of course it doesn’t stay, but it has happened!

Jenna,Mark “HuskyCrazed” Drady asks, “A Grim? As in the show Grim? Or something else?”

It is a Harry Potter reference. 🙂 “The Grim is an omen of death, which is reputed to bring about the demise of the person who encounters it. The Grim takes the shape of a large, black, spectral dog. Perhaps the most well-known of omens,[1] the Grim has earned infamy throughout the Wizarding world and is considered to be one of the worst, if not the worst, omens around.” (Source, Harry Potter Wikipedia)

Jan said, “Hail can come any time.”

Yes it can.  We can get it during a thunderstorm in the summer, but the hail is usually larger!

Jan K asked, “You know what I thought? I thought the deer ran in front of where your car might have been had you not turned around to see if it was the neighbor’s dog, thereby possibly avoiding an accident and meeting the Grim after all. Does that make any sense?”

It sure does!!  And you very well could be right!

Well that’s it for me!  I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

Follow-Up Friday – April 18, 2014

April 18, 2014 By Jodi

Welcome to this week’s edition of Follow-Up Friday, the post where I highlight reader’s comments, answer questions and generally wrap up my week.

You Make Me Smile – April 13, 2014

Jan K said, “Don’t you just love the determination of dogs?”

Yes I do.  I wish I was as determined as she is.

Roxy the Traveling Dog asked, “Is Sampson sad he can’t join her?”

Yes, Sampson is very sad.  I think he’s even sort of depressed and I can’t blame him.  He’s so limited in what he can do.

I Know Why They’re Called Labradors

Emma said, “Perhaps a general dogstacle would be appropriate as we all seem to be in the way of you busy humans. I guess there could be a catstacle as well. We often hear that we make better doors than windows at our house.”

He he he, yes I think both species are effective at being obstacles.  The cats I had always liked to be weaving around underfoot.

Callie, Shadow and Ducky’s mom said, “Callie will let you step over her; but unless she’s sound asleep, Shadow will get up in mid-step and send you falling flat on your face.”

Yup.  I can relate to that, although Delilah’s gotten better at letting us step over her.  HOWEVER, if she’s awake you better watch out.

Are you saying I could be on T.V.? Siriusly? That's Doggone awesome, who do I talk to?

Are you saying I could be on T.V.? Siriusly? That’s Doggone awesome, who do I talk to?

Blueberry’s Human said, “You know – I said it once and I’ll say it again…you need to have a video camera going at all times at your house. ;) That is reality TV that I would love to watch!”……”I call Blueberry the Ninja Dog because she is always slinking in behind me and scares the crap out of me when I turn around and there she is.”

OMG you’d hear an awful lot of yelling and swearing. LOL

Colby said, “Unfortunately, a blind person cannot see Labradoors. As part of our guide dog puppy training we work with our Labs and do our best to make sure they are not obstacles for their blind handlers.”

That’s awesome Colby.  You have my undying respect for that.  I’d love to learn some of those skills.

2 Brown Dawgs said, “From small puppies my doggies learn the phrase “gotta move”. That means get the hell out of my way. Only I say it real cheery: “gotta move”. ..happy voice. But I am thinking the other.”

I usually say, “Beep, Beep” but when that doesn’t work I usually yell and swear.  I’m a horrible dog owner.

Delilah and Me

Jessica asked, “I’m trying to decide if it’s *better* to know that Delilah is capable of loose leash walking or *worse.* What do you think?”

For me, its better knowing she’s capable of it.  It gives me something to work towards.

Jenna, Mark “HuskyCrazed” Drady says, “Three huskies who all want to be in the lead, and the only thing that has helped me with it has been using different harnesses to help with the pulling.”

I recently got a harness for Sampson that’s working rather well, BUT he is not at full capacity yet.  So I can’t say with certainty it will help.  But when he is 100% I’ll have them both on harnesses and let you know.

Who’s Been Pooping in my Bed?

Jessica asked, “How strange. Is Sampson still on medication?”

Yes he is.  He’s on Tramadol and Carprofen.  But he’s never done that before.  He only ever pooped in the house once and he was probably 3 months old when he did that.

Lauranne said, “Wow there are so many things wrong with this post – I’m not all squimish and stuff but yuck bare hands and even bigger yuck you offered it to your dog to eat!! You may have just earned the crazy dog lady title 2014!!  I also worry far too much – do you think there is a way to get paid for it??”

First I should tell you raw fed poop is very hard and dry.  I honestly couldn’t tell what it was until I’d picked it up AND I would NEVER let her eat the poop, it was an impulse just to see what she would do.  To your question I would say, I wish there was, but I don’t think so.

Sheena asked, “Are you sure YOU didn’t leave that poop in the bed so your scent was there for Sampson? Lol! Perhaps you have totally lost YOUR mind and you we’re sleep pooing?”

No, I’m certain I did not poop in the bed, it was definitely one of the dogs.

Emma said, “Obviously you are way off track on this one. You can’t just blame the dog! I don’t think you have a cat, but if you do, that would be the perp in this case. What about hubby? He is the one that is usually in that bed isn’t he?”

No to the cat and no to the Hubby.  He and Delilah have been sleeping in the other room.

HLAD 4-17-14

Callie, Shadow and Ducky’s mom asked, “And, by the way, what’s that on YOUR pillow?”

It is just the way the blanket is draped and the darkness of the photo.  I can assure you there is nothing on my pillow!

Frankie and Ernie said, “So you are saying… you had a CRAPPY experience????”

BWA HA HA yes, that’s exactly what I’m saying.

Jen K says, “wow, it just occurred to me the morbid conversations we dog owners will candidly have with each other….”

Yes, yes we do.

Jan K said, “You would have laughed if you had seen me at about 4 am this morning trying to get back in bed when Luke had taken over my spot when I got up to pee.”

I can picture this as I have gotten up many nights myself and lost my spot.  There have been times where I just end up sleeping somewhere else, because it’s just not worth the fight. 🙂

Blueberry’s Human said, “Maybe it was Sampson’s version of a mint on the pillow?……I can’t say my reaction would be the same as yours at finding out the “rock” turned out to be a turd. LOL – puzzlement??? I would have shrieked and flung it. ;) And best. line. ever. – “…what if he had a little one left in the chamber and when he went to sleep it shot out?”.

OMG mint on pillow!!  That cracks me up.  I’m glad you liked that line.  When I giggle writing it, I’m pretty sure that someone else will find it funny too.

I’m glad you all realized the post was intended to be funny.

That’s it for me, I hope you all have a great weekend and a Happy Easter.

Follow-Up Friday – April 11, 2014

April 11, 2014 By Jodi

Welcome to this week’s edition of Follow-up Friday, where I highlight reader’s comments, answer questions and generally just wrap up my week.

You Make Me Smile – April 6, 2014

They're here for me, right?

They’re here for me, right?

Sampson’s Seroma went down quickly.  Initially the surgeon told me it will get worse before it gets better, but I don’t really think it did.  I think the worst of it was Thursday or Friday.  I did as he said and warm/hot compressed it between 4 to 6 times per day and by the time he had his staples removed, it was looking REALLY good.

Roxy the Traveling Dog asked, “I hope he’s feeling better. Poor guy. And how are you holding up?”

I am hanging in there.  Much better since he’s off the cone, but he’s not using his leg properly and I’m so worried that I’m doing things wrong and hurting him.  Like Wednesday when I put him in the car I’m pretty sure I did it wrong and I’m afraid I hurt him.

Jenna, Mark “HuskyCrazed” Drady said, “Its funny because when I walk down the street, so many people always want to pet my huskies, so when a person walks by and pays no attention to them, they just sort of state at the person like “um what are you waiting for?”

Sampson is exactly the same way!  He thinks every person he sees is there only for him.

Dodge Dog

SlimDoggy said, “It’s so hard to manage different activity levels…I know exactly how you feel when I have to leave one of them behind.”

It sucks.  Each one of them barks when the other one leaves the yard, but it’s unfair to take them both with me because they currently walk at different paces.

Genevieve said, “Playing dodge dog with off-leash dogs scares me. I have done it, but I don’t like it.”

It stinks and then there are the moments when you think you’ve succeeded and BAM you walk right into an off-leash pup.

A Mama’s Heartache

They can fix it? Really? I can't wait to feel better.

They can fix it? Really? I can’t wait to feel better.

First of all, I’m so, so sorry for giving so many of you a start.  I really, really suck at blog post titles!!  Originally it was going to be called, “You can’t prepare yourself” but at last minute I change my mind and went with A Mama’s Heartache.  Poor choice on my part.

Emma said, “Usually we keep our collar and Mom takes the leash. Even at day care where there are over fifty dogs coming and going all day, they keep even Bailie’s leash.”

Exactly, if a daycare can keep track of all those leashes, I don’t see how a vet’s office can’t manage it.

Jackie Bouchard shared a memory of her pup Abby’s amputation and then said, “Sorry for the novella. Not great memories. Prefer to remember her post-recovery, when she was awesome and amazing and an inspiration.”

Don’t ever apologize for sharing on this blog, I’m here to listen and support, just like you all do for me.  I’m so glad that Abby became your inspiration.

Beth said, “I was worried I would forget to bring the collar and leash with me when I came to pick her up.”

And Jan K said, “I might drop the dog off and have my hubby pick them up on his way home from work (he goes right by there).”

Exactly!!  I actually left the collar and leash in the car, but that would be my worry too.  I’d drive all the way out to get him and realize, shit I forgot his collar and leash!

Saved by Dogs said, “Devil’s advocate – there are rare dogs who can hurt themselves when left in a kennel with a collar.”

You are absolutely right.  I certainly don’t want him wearing the collar in a kennel, but feel like they could put the leash on a hook behind the kennel of find another way to manage it.

Blueberry’s Human said, “It’s sad enough walking back to the car and driving home without your fuzzy buddy than to have them hand you the leash and collar like that!”

Thank you.  That is exactly my point.  It felt very final.

Loud and Clear

Really, the staples are coming out? And I can stop wearing the cone? Can Delilah eat it?

Really, the staples are coming out? And I can stop wearing the cone? Can Delilah eat it?

2 Brown Dawgs said, “I wonder if Delilah is nervous because she can’t see exactly what you are doing when you clip her back nails.”

I suppose it’s possible, I’ll have to see about positioning myself better the next time I clip them.

Two French Bulldogs said, “Mom is laughing cause we are going to be the death of her.”

Yeah, I think we have to laugh.

Saved by Dogs said, “Sure people can get things backwards but to not want a Lab – why their thinking must be pure broken!”

I know, I know.  As much as she vexes me, she also brings a lot of joy and laughter, she’s just frustrating sometimes. 🙂

That’s it for me, I hope you all have a wonderful weekend!!
