Follow-Up Friday – October 31, 2014

October 31, 2014 By Jodi

Welcome to this week’s edition of Follow-Up Friday, the post where I highlight reader’s comments, answer questions and generally just wrap up my week.

You Make Me Laugh – October 26, 2014

Does this leaf make my mouth look big?

Does this leaf make my mouth look big?

Jan said, “It is in the Poodle genetic code that they aren’t allowed to drool and panting is only allowed at temperatures over 100. :-)”

Do you think they can breed that in? LOL

It’s NOT Okay

Von said, “I had an unsocialised and reactive dog; I understand the frustrations of trying to give one a nice outing. But you need to calm down. All your neighbours are not going to stay inside while you walk your dogs, so try to relax and enjoy your walk. Yes, that’s easily said, but damn, the whole world is not trying to annoy you.”

Oh my!  I’m sorry if I gave the impression that the whole world is trying to annoy me, or that I think my neighbors should stay inside.  Since you’ve had a reactive dog I’m sure you understand how months of hard work can be shot to hell from one encounter.  I wish my neighbors would walk their dogs (there are too many of them that never leave their yards) I just wish they’d realize they aren’t the only ones out walking their dogs and that not all dogs are friendly.

As for the calming down part, I do agree there are times when I can over react.  The incident in the park was not one of them.  1) We have leash laws in our state and 2) it is not a dog park.  I had never seen the dog before and the owner was yards and yards away.

Emma said, “We don’t get it when Mom says we might not be friendly and they keep letting their dog approach us. What is there to not understand???”

I wish I knew Emma. They are really taking a risk of hurting themselves or their dog.

2 Brown Dawgs said, “I do not understand clueless people. But I do blame the newer methods of dog training which basically teach people that all dogs are friendly and all dogs should be friends. I think of this as the dog park mentality.”

What gets me is the people that look at you like, what do you mean the dog might not like a dog?  Like dogs can’t have personalities just like people!

Blueberry’s Human said, “Yikes. Apparently, dog ownership comes with dealing with moron dog owners we will meet along the way. ”

Um, yeah, apparently so. 🙁

Cappie said, “No argument with any of this. I have a scar on my wrist that says every friendly dog off its leash has the capacity to become not-friendly without a lot of advance warning.”

I’m sorry to hear that.  Sadly not all dog people are responsible.

Kimberly Gauthier said, “I’’ve finally reached a point where I have to bury my head in the sand most days, because I know that because of my blog and obsession with our dogs, I’m never going to be satisfied with the average dog owner and how they raise their dog.”

It’s hard not to feel that way.  There are so many clueless people.

Leah Erb said, “You are so brave to drop your leash when a dog runs up to you. How did you get the guts to do it the very first time?? ”

I don’t think it was about me being brave, it was about making Delilah feel safe, like she had options.  I actually started it in obedience class where there wasn’t much opportunity for escape.  Now when I do it, I just keep my fingers crossed and figure if I have to, I’ll track her down.

Mom Kim from Team BeagleBratz said, ” It reminds me about what I say about other drivers – you can be as defensive and safe a driver as possible – it is the OTHERS who will cause problems and when they do – they will wonder what happened – it was someone else needing to be more careful.”

Sadly you are very right.

Jen said, “I’ve been lucky, every time a dog has tried to get in Elka’s face, I’ve been able to body block and keep that dog away with my body language. But clueless owners…I could bitch endlessly about that…”

If It’s Not One Thing…

First the blood work.  Delilah’s little raisin ingestion had no adverse effects on her kidneys.  Her liver levels went up again but she’s really only 3 weeks post surgery and they did give her antibiotics.  I’m staying the course for the moment and will re-evaluate in the beginning of December.

2 Brown Dawgs said, “I wonder if Delilah’s nail may be split or maybe she did what Freighter did and shoved the nail up into her toe? Those can be really difficult to spot and are very painful. We couldn’t even see it first. I am guessing it hurts her so you may want to keep an eye on it.”

I’ve been thinking about it since this comment.  I think the nails might just have been short.  They did trim them when she had her dental which was only a few weeks ago, but I will keep an eye on her.

Beth said, “When Theo eats something he shouldn’t,,, like 60 grapes in no time at all, I give him a small piece of bread soaked in the amount of hydrogen peroxide appropriate for his weight. I am reluctant to force anything down his throat and he happily eats the soggy bread.”

THAT is brilliant.  Thank you for sharing.  It’s a lot better than the way I did it. 🙁

Blueberry’s Human said, “Delilah is in a class all by herself – she cracks me up! Have you gotten a sign yet that they often have in warehouses – you know, “_____ Days Without Incident”. Then you fill in the number! You could customize it “12 Days Since I Had to Induce Vomiting in Delilah!””

BWA HA HA I love it!!

Kirsten said, “You can’t reinforce an emotion, and dogs don’t fake being afraid–they react because they actually are afraid.”

I’m more worried that it hurt her. 🙁

Dog Walking, Not for the Faint of Heart

Lauranne said, “that first picture you have published. After looking at it a couple of times I genuinely thought you had taken it and that you were some amazingly talented photographer (which you are) and then I noticed the tree and thought, wow that’s an amazingly neat tree.”

It’s true.  I really took that picture!!  Here’s what it looked like before I modified it on PicMonkey.

Still freaky.

Still freaky.

I always feel like....somebody's watching me.

I always feel like….somebody’s watching me.

Molly the Wally said, “Those darn crows on our park have been known to attack dogs during the breeding season so we keep way from where there nests might be”

Holy smokes!!  I don’t know what I’d do!

Jan K said, “I was out in the yard at dusk the other night and heard those birds cackling away. My hubby was on the deck and I kept asking him if he heard them, but he didn’t. I swear at one point they sounded exactly like a human (or witch) laughing! It was really kind of freaky.”

Oh that would freak me out!

Don’t forget to enter the give-away!  Even if you can’t use the products yourself, you can always donate them to a shelter!

That’s it for me.  Have a safe and Happy Halloween from all of us at Heart Like a Dog!

What scares you about this picture Mama?

It’s Howl-O-Ween woman, can’t you get it right?

Follow-Up Friday – October 24, 2014

October 24, 2014 By Jodi

Welcome to this week’s edition of Follow-Up Friday, the post where I highlight reader’s comments, answer questions and generally just wrap up my week.

You Make Me Laugh – October 19, 2014

Ooooh, something delicious must have been here.

Ooooh, something delicious must have been here.

Cupcake said, “Mom laughs at me when I am sniffing the grass so hard and so fast, and then one blade of grass pinches me and I jump a mile and give that ouchie piece of grass the skunk-eye.”

LOL Cupcake, sometimes Delilah jumps for no apparent reason too!

Pamela asked, “How do you keep from getting down on all fours to see if you can figure out what she’s smelling?”

Um…that’s easy Pamela.  I know what the dogs do on that grass. 🙂

That’s a Wrap Folks…

Emma said, “No, we didn’t participate because Mom said we had nothing to write, but over the course of it all we thought of lots of things, but never got to writing about them.”

I though maybe you and mom would have written about your lip surgery or even Katie’s arthritis.  😀  If you decide to write a post, let me know and I’ll add it to the page.

Beth said, “I learned so much and also feel so much better knowing that I’m not the only one that sometimes feels overwhelmed by the stress that comes with caring for ill pets–we have such an amazing community!”

Thank you Beth!  I was hoping that’s what the Community Page would accomplish.  To let others know they are not alone and there are many times different choices.

What’s Lost is Found

Bandit is home!

Bandit is home!

Lauranne said, “And the happy news has completely overcome my embarrassment at taking over half of that post to figure out what on earth a BIL was – i thought it was something nasty that a doctor may need to look at ;0)!!”

Oh my dear, I’m so sorry.  I was trying not to write Brother-in-law 15 times! LOL  Then I went back and read it and realized I wrote it out, abbreviated it and wrote it out.  There was no consistency in that post. LOL

Chelsea Price said, “Thank you for this post. Wow – 5 miles is quite a distance for such a small dog! There has been a local yellow lab missing since August in our area…it just breaks my heart.”

That is so heartbreaking.  We have a town about 15 miles away and the two little dogs were either taken or escaped during a burglary.  Their “mom” has been searching for then since February.  The not knowing is the worst part.  I think even if the news were bad, at least there would be closure.

Mr. Grouchy Pants

Genevieve said, “Overreacting after the fact – maybe. It must be awfully tempting to leave a poop bomb on that lawn, though.”

Aren’t you kind.  Poop is mild compared to what I was thinking. 😉

Emma said, “Mom always takes it personally and gets upset when humans bark at us for something we didn’t mean to do or something like what happened to you. ”

I think it’s hard not to take it personal.  Especially when you are THAT dog owner, that is responsible and respectful.

Retro Rover said, “Ugh! People who don’t like dogs are the worst Ive been asked by people not to have my dogs go on the curb across from their buildings”

WHAAAAT?  How?  That’s not even…..it’s the city’s curb!!

Sue said, “First, thanks for the warning. I sent Rudy out of the room ;-) So, um, this guy thought you were waiting so you could take your dogs up into his yard to poop or something?”

LOL Sue, poor Rudy!  I have no idea what he was thinking, if I was going to sneak poop into his yard it wouldn’t be in broad daylight!

2 Brown Dawgs said, “Next time your reply should be: “They aren’t on your lawn they are on the right of way. The city is nice enough to let you use it. Right now my dogs are using it.””

I wish you’d been there. LOL I hate confrontations with people.

Slimdoggy said, “My mom used to say to me whenever someone hurt my feelings was “Consider the source” – an obvious jab at the person to put it back on them…so I say – The guy’s an asshat…don’t let him spoil your walk.”

You called him an asshat.  I love you Kate.

Jessica said, “Seattle is pretty dog friendly but I am aware that some people just don’t like your dog on their lawn period. When we are out on walks, I make every effort to keep them from walking on people’s lawns. We have sidewalks though. You didn’t have a choice. As you said, technically you weren’t on his lawn. He’s the dumb asshat.”

Out here when we have sidewalks, there is usually a patch of grass between the walk and the road.  Is that how it is in WA?  If we had that I would make every effort to keep them doing their business on that patch.  But without the sidewalks, they kind of have to go on the lawns.

Flea said, “Some people are just crotchety. Must be really sad being him. I’m glad you’re not like him. Bring him some cookies. Take the dogs with you. Right up onto his porch.”

That’s a great idea!  I love how you think.

FRANKIE and ERNIE said, “No WONDER the poor guy is such a GROUCH… He obviously does Not share his life with a Dog.”

You know Frankie and Ernie, that’s exactly what I said, once I got over the hurt and shock.

Hawk said, “Some people! Really! Glad he’s not my neighbor! I think he needs a dog…but I wouldn’t want to be the dog!”

I don’t blame you for not wanting to be the dog!  I suspect he wouldn’t be a great dog owner. 🙁

That’s it for me folks, have an awesome weekend!

Follow-Up Friday – October 17, 2014

October 17, 2014 By Jodi

Welcome to this week’s edition of Follow-Up Friday, the post where I highlight reader’s comments, answer questions and generally wrap up my week.

You Make Laugh – October 12, 2104

Definitely Hosers

Definitely Hosers

Emma asked, “Have you tried carrying a squeaker in your pocket that sometimes will draw attention?”

No I have not!!  THAT is BRILLIANT!  Thank you Emma!

Sue said, ” Suddenly they remember very few commands, if any. And they certainly don’t want to look into the camera. It’s like their in a witness protection program!”

LOL oh Sue, that made me laugh!  It’s true though.

Kitty Cat Chronicles said, “I too have a Sampson and Delilah – the cat versions! It’s so unusual to find another Sampson spelled with a “p”. :) My cat’s nicknames are Sampy and Deli (like a deli sandwich).”

First I love that your cats have the same names as my dogs. 🙂  But if I told you all their nicknames, it would probably be a whole post!  LOL  I’ll start with the two most common nicknames for each of them, Sampson is “Sam-man” or “Punkin” and Delilah is “Sweet Pea” or “Pretty Girl.”

On the Right Track

Sophie said, “The best news is that the liver appears normal.”

Yes that IS the best news.  If the liver looked unusual or had obvious abnormalities we may have made different choices.

Cupcake said, “I love how you always have a plan B.”

I ALWAYS have a plan B and if by some odd chance I don’t, I’m usually pretty quick to formulate one. 😉

Emma asked, “Unless it is really a serious issue, she wouldn’t do the biopsy either, and what would it really accomplish?”

And Sue said, “Totally supports your decisions. Why put Delilah through the biopsy? Jeffie is the same age and I would make the same choice.”

You both expressed exactly our thoughts.  And honestly, even if it were something really AWFUL I think we would make the same choice.

JoAnn asked, “Great plan, BTW do you fast her before her liver tests? ”

No we don’t.  We’ve never been told to.  Should we?

Just a Run of the Mill Dog

Lauranne asked, “I am assuming your sister reported this horrible lady? ”

I will tell you, probably not.  Back when my sister got Bandit, it wasn’t a punishable crime and really in most states, it’s still not.  Which is so sad.

Emma asked, ” I wonder why he ran?”

My sister and brother-in-law own 11 acres, sometimes they let the dogs out to run.  I suspect either something frightened Bandit and he ran off and got lost, or he wandered too far and got turned around and frightened.  He was seen shortly after he went missing last Sunday and hasn’t been seen since.

My sister and BIL have set up a feeding station in the area he was last seen, and have left a pillowcase with their scent on it there as well.  But so far the food hasn’t been touched. 🙁

Fur Everywhere said, “I do not know how someone can live with him/herself and run/manage a puppy mill.”

I agree with you.  It’s hard for me to imagine how someone can have so little disregard for another living being.

A Win for Sampson

Don't you love it when a plan comes together?

Don’t you love it when a plan comes together?

Sophie said, “I personally think he is performing a service by “teaching” others the joy of dogs.”

I just wish more people would open their hearts to the possibilities.

2 Brown Dawgs said, “I bet he knew that woman would be there and that is why he picked that route.”

Do you know, I wouldn’t put it past him? LOL  He remembers where he meets people and where people are nice to him and he looks there.  I can guarantee you if we go that way again he will know right where to stop. LOL

Emma said, “I’m a people dog, and I can’t get enough of people, but I’m not much for other dogs.”

That’s the funny thing Emma, once he greets the dog, he ditches it for the person.

Sue said, “I think he’s a wonderful canine goodwill ambassador!”

And he sure loves his job. LOL

Mary said, “These guys are the same way. Sometimes I don’t want to be social however.”

I’m in that boat with you sister. 🙂

Jen Gabbard said, “I’m a dog person and absolutely love meeting new, friendly dogs. I love that he sat there patiently with that big perfect smile.”

And that is the beauty of Sampson, he’s a very charming dog.

Finally, I just want to let you all know that I’ve got family coming in this weekend, so I will get to your posts as soon as I can.

Have a great weekend!
