Hello Again Dr. B

December 3, 2012 By Jodi

Thursday evening I noticed a spot on the inside of Sampson’s left leg.  It looked similar to the spot he had in the beginning of October, except it hadn’t advanced as far.  I’ve also noticed that both of my dogs have been scratching a lot.

Another spot, it starts out looking like a bruise.

I was picking up food on Saturday so I thought I’d run it by Sandy, she’s very knowledgeable about all things dog and she usually has a holistic solution.

Her first thought on the itching was fleas. It has been a very bad flea/tick season in the northeast for these critters.  I said, “I think I’d see fleas, especially on Sampson.”  She said it could have been only one or two, you need to comb him and check his tail area to see if it feels like he has crumbs there. (Ew gross.)  She also said it could be mites, which really freaked me out. (I combed them both when I got home, no sign of fleas.)

As for the skin thing, she feels like his immune system is weak. 🙁

As you can imagine, I left Sandy’s and called the vet.  We scheduled him for 9:30 this morning with Dr. B.

I’m here to see Dr. B, can you please tell her Sampson has arrived?

Sampson was of course excited to see Dr. B.  I tried to get a picture but his excitement was very prominent in the photo, and since they shamed me good on the Human Shaming blog hop, I decided you could do without the visual imagery.

As we walked into the exam room, I noticed he had spots on the inside of each leg!

Dr. B said I just want to read through his records and refresh my memory.

You can read and pet at the same time, right? I’ve heard Vet’s are multi-taskers.

Dr. B looked him over and said, yes he has another skin infection.  Thankfully we caught it before it got too bad. She gave me (she didn’t actually GIVE it to me, I had to pay for it) an anti-biotic ointment (Mupirocin) which is applied twice daily.  She also gave me some Vetericin VF wound and skin care spray gel which she suggests I apply the second I notice something amiss.  She said many times the gel will fix the issue before it progresses.

I was concerned about his immune system and the fact that he keeps getting infections. Dr. B put him on Welactin 3, which is a Natural Omega-3 for dogs (fish oil) and she also put him on a probiotic by Animal Essentials. We’re hoping that the combination of the two will give his immune system the boost that it needs to get him over this hump.

She also said if I don’t see an improvement within a week or so, or if it gets worse to call and she will give him the oral antibiotic again.  I’m really hoping to avoid that.

As for the itching, well she ruled out fleas and mites, the official thought is the drier weather, combined with the fireplace had just dried out their skin, which hopefully the Welactin will help with.

Do you use supplements with your pets?  What do you use and why?

This Is Going To Be Harder Than I Thought

December 2, 2012 By Jodi

Remember these guys?  They are featured on the cover of The Dogs of Blogville Calendar.

Ryder and Kori from All Things Collie

I’m trying to get the Dogs of Blogville Calendar ordering worked out.  I had hopes that WordPress had a plugin for ordering.  From what I can see they do, except it’s designed for people purchasing digital items.  Which works great for e-books, but not so great for calendars.

Right now it looks like I will be ordering the calendars from either Vista Print or Costco, they are the two with the cheapest prices.  I can get the calendars for just under $10, assuming I can send them to you via Priority Mail, we should make a profit of $5 on each calendar.

I had hopes of getting the calendars for less money, so we could donate more, but I can’t find anyone cheaper than $10.

If you know of somewhere else, please let me know.  I don’t plan on ordering them until next weekend.

Right now the best I can see for ordering is to use my paypal account, if you don’t have a paypal account or aren’t comfortable with that method then you will need to contact me privately and we can make other arrangements. My paypal is connected to my auntiejodi@hotmail.com e-mail account.

It’s important to remember when you are using paypal to indicate the money is for a GIFT, if you do not do that, they will deduct a fee from it, which will decrease our donation to our beneficiaries.

There are a couple of other ways to increase profit.

1) If you live near someone and don’t mind delivering calendars, I can ship them to one address.

2) You can order more than one calendar. 🙂

3) You have the option of donating a bit more for your calendar.  The calendars are $20 each, if everyone donated just one additional dollar, it would add up.

It’s just an idea and certainly not required.

If I’ve done this right (sometimes I think I should just rename the blog “If I’ve Done This Right.) you can complete this form and all your information will be sent to me, I will then cross-check the form with the paypal payments and contact you directly if there are any problems.

I’d like to keep the ordering time short, perhaps stop the ordering by next Saturday morning so I can order them and hopefully get the calendars in time for Christmas.

Did I forget anything?

Thank You

December 1, 2012 By Jodi

Exactly two years ago today, I sat down and started this blog.

The premise was derived from the movie, Julie and Julia, (without the cooking.)  Don’t get me wrong, I love cooking but for me the idea was more about writing.

My goal was to write a blog post every single day for one year to improve my writing and eventually achieve the status of published author.

It’s still my goal today. (Well not so much the writing every day part.)

My first post, was really pretty lame. At the time I started it, I had no idea what I would write on a daily basis, quite truthfully I really wasn’t even sure what a blog was.

In fact, I didn’t have a tag line for at least a couple of months, my header simply said Jodi Stone.  It wasn’t until one of my two readers suggested a tag line that I added, “Life with Sampson and Delilah.”

My first two days didn’t have titles, I just called them day one and day two.

I didn’t know what tags were (maybe I still don’t) in fact I didn’t tag anything until more than two months into my challenge.

I didn’t know how to get readers, what a blog hop was, how a blog hop worked, what the code was or how to get it to work on my blog.

Well I think you’re getting the idea, I basically knew nothing at all about blogging.

Well, as you can tell, I’ve learned a few things. The biggest thing I’ve learned is it’s not just about writing, it’s about the interaction with my readers and the friendships and relationships I’ve made.

I completed my goal that first year, (except for one day when my granddaughter was born and that’s because I just forgot) and then I found myself committing to another full year of blogging.

Well today dear friends and family, today I completed THAT goal.  Two full years of blogging every day.

And I couldn’t have done it without every single one of you. Your friendship and support mean so very much to me, and I just want to say thank you.

Thank you for reading, thank you for commenting and thank you for all the other ways you show me how much you care.

I’ll just sleep through this bit, if you don’t mind.

A few of my favorite pictures. 🙂

Have a great weekend!
