Hickory Dickory Dee – Barks and Bytes

April 30, 2015 By Jodi

Tuesday night I was busy in the kitchen when a shadow in the backyard caught my eye.  My faithful sidekick, Delilah the Velcro dog was with me, so I oh so casually made my way to the window to check it out.

It was a cat!

I contemplated opening the door and letting Delilah chase it off (I mean, this was the kitty that stalked us not too long ago,) then I thought about shooing it away myself, but I noticed the cat was inspecting the chipmunk holes and thought, maybe this is a good thing. I left the cat alone.

As discreetly as I could, (so as not to alert the D-Dog) I kept tabs on the cat.  The cat inspected one area then another and finally I couldn’t see him anymore.

A short time later Hubby went outside to start the grill and the dogs and I went with him. Hubby and I were discussing which trees we wanted to cut down when all of a sudden Delilah made a mad rush in one area of the yard.

Shit she must have found the cat!

Sure enough, there was Delilah, fur up and Mr./Ms. Kitty all puffed up, high in the tree.

Cat stuck in tree

The colors are lovely, but I felt bad for the kitty.

I brought the dogs inside and went back out.  “Here kitty, kitty” I called.

“Meow” said the cat.

“Come down here kitty” I said, “The bad doggie has gone back inside the house.”

“Meow” said the cat.

“Can you bring the ladder up here?” I shouted to Hubby.

“I’m not climbing that tree.”

“Can you bring the ladder up here for me?” I asked.

“You’re not climbing that tree.”

“Why not?”

No response.

I contemplated the tree. Hell I can climb, it’s tall but not that tall. I even like climbing, I climbed to the top of the rope tower three years ago when I took my grandson to the dinosaur park hauling him up behind me. I eyed the tree again. Hubby stood there eyeing me.

Then Hubby walked away.

“Where are you going?” I asked Hubby.

“To get the ladder.”

Good man.

BUT the ladder wouldn’t reach the tree because there were smaller trees around it and they had too many branches, which impeded the ladder’s placement.

Maybe the next door neighbor would let us attempt a rescue from his yard? I marched over in my PJ’s and knocked on his door.

He wasn’t home.

I marched back home and grabbed a box of cat food and a small dish.  I shook the box and added a small amount to the bowl, I set it in front of kitty on a stump and tried again.

“Here kitty, yum, yum,” I said.

“No thanks, I’m set here” said kitty, except to me it just sounded like, “Meow.”

Cat stuck in tree

He inched his way down, settling himself in the crook of the tree.

Darkness fell. I checked a couple of times before I went to bed, shining a flashlight in the direction of the tree and each time, two little eyes peered out at me from the dark.

I felt horrible, but it looked like kitty had settled in for the night.

When I got up yesterday morning the first thing I did was check on kitty.

He/she was still there.

I felt bad, this is a young cat and here it spent the entire night stuck in a tree.

Then the crows started in.  Those fucking crows, it reminded me of the time when poor little Bob was stuck in the tree.

I made a plan. If the cat was still in the tree when I came home at lunch, I would text my neighbor and ask him to help me rescue the cat after work. Or I would call animal control, or the fire department.

I guess the crows must have worked their magic because when I checked at lunch, kitty was gone.

So by now you must be wondering about the title of this post. Well to commemorate the event, I wrote a poem.

He was so afraid of her bite

He stayed there all night

Is She Going To Fart and…

April 13, 2015 By Jodi

I talk to my dogs all the time. In fact, I talk to them like they can understand me.

But sometimes, sometimes I just can’t believe the things that come out of my mouth.

Like Friday when Delilah farted and I said to her, stand up when you do that, I want to get that on video.

I'm not bad, I'm just photographed that way.

I’m not bad, I’m just photographed that way.

Let me back track a bit.

Friday when I came home from work, I discovered Delilah had eaten some bubble gum. I typically don’t have bubblegum in the house, but I’d bought some for my grandchildren for their Easter baskets and left three pieces on the top of my desk.

The top of my desk, which is a good 4 feet high. It had been sitting there for the entire week, but for some reason on Friday, Delilah decided to climb on the top of my desk and eat the gum.

Wrappers and all.

Of course I panicked.  I know certain sugarless gums contain ingredients that can be deadly to dogs.

While I was dialing the vet’s office, I was looking up the ingredient list online.  As best I could tell there was nothing that could harm her, but better safe than sorry.

Most of the time when I call the vet’s office a person answers the phone, but there are occasions when the staff is busy and an answering machine picks up.  The spiel is if you can leave a message please do so, if you feel you have an emergency press zero.

I pressed zero.

Me, after identifying myself: Yes, Delilah ate bubble gum.

Vet tech: How much gum did she eat?

Me: I think it was about three pieces. With the wrappers.

Vet tech: What kind of gum was it? Did it have Xylitol in it?

Me: It was sugarless Bubble Yum, original flavor. I don’t think it had Xylitol, but she ate the wrapper too, I’m on the website and I don’t think it does.

Vet tech: Hold on a minute, let me ask the vet.

Vet tech: How is she acting?

Me: She seems fine.

Vet tech: Okay, let me talk to the vet and check the information we have.

Half a minute passes.

Vet tech: Okay, I checked the information we have and that gum had no Xylitol in it, Dr. B says Delilah should be fine, but just keep an eye on her.

Me: Is she going to fart and blow a bubble out her butt?

Vet tech laughing: Oh my god, that would be awesome.  No, no she shouldn’t, but if by chance she does, make sure you get a picture of it, I’m pretty sure it would make you some money.

Me: I bet it wins America’s Funniest Videos.

Flash forward a half an hour.  I’m in the kitchen prepping dinner.  Delilah saunters in and sits down.  As is her custom when she sits in the kitchen, she farts.

Which is when I say, stand up when you do that, I want to catch that on video.

And for the record, she did not fart and blow a bubble out her ass.  Truthfully, I’m kind of disappointed, I imagine I could have got a lot of mileage out of that one.

Divide and Conquer

April 6, 2015 By Jodi

Before Delilah joined our pack, Hubby, Sampson and I use to hike at least once per weekend.

Once Delilah joined the family our hiking kind of tapered off.  Part of the reason was we were in the process of moving and settling in to a new home in a new town.

Then I discovered the field and trails at the top of our street and while it isn’t an off-leash park, mostly it’s only locals who frequent the area and most of them leave their dogs off-leash.  Wood walking was open to us once again.

Sampson and I both adore walking in the woods.  Sampson is usually a pretty good little guy, with the exception of the one time we lost him (if you’ve never read this post, at least go check out the video) and the time he thought it would be a good idea to leave us behind and go running with another pack of dogs.  Typically he runs ahead a bit, but then stops to look and wait for me.  Normally he doesn’t get too far ahead.

After Sampson’s ACL surgery last year, his recovery restricted him from walking on uneven surfaces, so our wood walking time dwindled down.

Delilah’s wood walks of late have become challenging to say the least.  I find myself dealing with one of three problems, either she’s scarfing dog poop, causing deep revulsion for me, or she’s pulling me through the woods, causing intense discomfort.

Oh and did I mention she likes to run off?  Yes, the darling Diva that lives in my house is a neighborhood trash picker.  She doesn’t just run off willy nilly through the woods.

Oh no.  That’s just too tame for our Delilah.

No, Delilah likes to leave the woods and scavenge for food in the places she knows will have it, people’s houses.

Oh yes, one time she walked right into somebody’s garage. WHY the hell their garage door was open is beyond me, but open it was and in she went.  Thankfully I got her out of there before their dog discovered her.

As Lauren Miller noted in last Thursday’s post about her dog Zoe, “I’ve always struggled with loose leash walking with Zoe because the environment is way more rewarding than anything I could ever offer her. There are squirrels, rabbits and deer oh my and she couldn’t give a crap about what I’m doing.

You said it so perfectly, this is true of Delilah as well.  She does amazingly well for the longest time and then one day, pfft, she’s gone off on a tear and I’m left in panic mode.

Last weekend I decided to change all that and in doing so, I rediscovered just how much I enjoy walking my dogs.

My secret?

I decided when time allows, I will take the dogs on individual walks.  So last weekend, Sampson and I set off for the woods.

We had the trails all to ourselves, we walked the trails, just him and I and it was so nice.

Golden Labrador

Try and keep up Mama, I know it’s been a while but you can do it.

I kept his walk to about half an hour and then headed home.

Then I grabbed Delilah and we walked the neighborhood.  We did our traditional route and Delilah wanted to continue so we did.  All told we walked for about 50 minutes.

I find it’s much easier walking with only one dog, although I don’t always have the time for it, but I figure if I can work each dog individually with their triggers, eventually walking together will get better as well.

Divide and conquer?

Hell yeah, I have opposable thumbs too. 🙂

Do you work your dogs individually or is it easier for you to work them at the same time?  Give me your secrets in the comments.
