Happy Gotcha Day Delilah!

May 26, 2015 By Jodi

Eight years ago today I stood in a commuter parking lot along with about 50 other people, an empty leash in my hands, waiting for the dog that would inevitably change my life forever.

It was a rough first day, noticed the red-rimmed eyes.

It was a rough first day, noticed the red-rimmed eyes.

If you want more in-depth about that first day, you can read all about it, HERE.

I’ve had a rescue intake coordinator tell me she’s a poster dog for rescue, but that wasn’t always the case. We had a rough and bumpy road in the beginning.

The dog that came off that transport truck wasn’t afraid of people, but she was aloof, almost as if she didn’t have much use for people, or hadn’t learned how to bond with them.

She sometimes listened (some things never change) and could follow basic obedience commands, but she didn’t much care for petting and being loved. It took us some time to figure out that she liked her chest rubbed, she was good about letting you clip her nails, but didn’t like her ears touched and definitely don’t move your feet near hers, especially when she’s sleeping!

Today she actively seeks out affection and has gotten better with allowing people other than my husband or I to love on her. She loves to climb up in my husband’s lap and has even done that with both of my sisters as well.

Now what? Bob made it look so easy.

I told you’d I’d fit.

She mimics Sampson by lying on her back and wiggling around waiting for belly rubs when we come home from work.

Nothing makes me smile more than when I rub her ears and she takes in a deep breath and lets it out with a big sigh.

Or when she rushes to greet me, voicing her joy at my return home.

Or when I climb into bed and she looks back, then leans into me, waiting for me to rub her to sleep.

Or when she stuffs her head between my legs, demanding attention and sitting while I give it.

Chocolate Lab

Yes, right there, that’s the spot.

Delilah, you’ve taught me patience. You’ve brought me joy. You’ve made me laugh when I thought there was nothing to laugh about. You’ve comforted me when I’ve been sad and hugged me when I cried. You’ve challenged me to be a better person and I sure hope I’ve risen to the challenge.

Yes, it’s been a bumpy road, but I wouldn’t trade one second of it.

Thank you for eight amazing years Delilah Rose, it’s true what they say. One woman’s trash is another woman’s treasure and you surely are a treasure to me.

Happy Gotcha day my love.

Shaking My Head

May 25, 2015 By Jodi

Saturday I had scheduled a pedicure in preparation for BlogPaws, I also had a few errands to run.

Hubby’s plans included cleaning up the side yard so he could take advantage of a shed special the Home Depot had.

I left the house around 8:45 am and got back around 1:00. As I pulled up to my house I noticed a chocolate lab in my neighbor’s yard.

Hmm, I wonder whose dog that is? I thought to myself.

Then I looked up at my house and saw the gate was open.

I looked back at the dog, “That’s my dog!”

I pulled over and rolled down my window to shout up at Hubby who stood in the yard grinning at me.

At this point, Delilah also saw me and ran up to the car, which is exactly when the grin left Hubby’s face as he realized Delilah was loose and I knew it.

Chocolate Lab

You’re over-reacting, I was just patrolling the yard and lost my way.

The exact same thing happened a month or so ago when he got a new grill. My son-in-law came over to help unload the grill and they left the gate open. It was a nice day and I had the back door open and Delilah took advantage of it.

I went outside to discover Delilah monging on something in my neighbor’s yard (which I’m pretty sure she was doing on Saturday also.)

I was good, I kept my cool and simply said, “WE have to make sure the back door is closed when WE are leaving the gate open.”

His response, “The back door was closed.”

He just didn’t realize Delilah was already outside.

Today we ask you to remember those who paid the ultimate price in service to their country.

If Thwarting Were an Olympic Sport

May 18, 2015 By Jodi

If thwarting were an Olympic sport, this dog…

This dog would be a Gold Medalist.

Chocolate Lab

Gold Medal? That’s a flour right? You can eat flour, right?

I’m not sure if it’s intentional or not, but this dog manages to get in my way more times a day then I can count.

Certain times are worse than others.

When I’m in a hurry.

  • I walk in the door with a couple of bags full of groceries and am rushing to the kitchen to put them away because they’re heavy.

She’s running right in front of me, trying to beat me into the kitchen.

  • I walk in from work and have to pee.

I say a quick hello and rush towards the bathroom with Delilah hot on my heels. I try and get my pants undone and Delilah shoves her head between my legs.

Do you know how hard it is to try and pull your pants down with a dog’s head between your legs?

The other time she’s spot on her game is when food is involved.

  • It is close to meal or snack time and I get up to do something.

She is right behind me, prancing along, or she stops and waits, standing right where I need to go.

  • When I’m preparing food in the kitchen.

I wouldn’t mind so much if she’d stay in one spot. But no matter how many times I say, “Delilah get out of the kitchen” or “Sit right there” she gets up and comes right back. I can’t tell you how many times a day I say, “Stop licking the floor!”

Last week I found myself saying, “That’s your face I’m TRIPPING on.”

You can’t make this shit up.

Our kitchen is an open kitchen so there’s no way to shut her out of it. Which means you just have to stay on top of it, but man this dog is persistent, and the minute you turn your back, she goes for the gold.

Yup, if thwarting were an Olympic Sport, I’d have a Gold Medalist on my hands.

Tell me what sport you’d add to the Olympics that your pet would medal in.
