I Knew That’d Bite Me In The…Barks and Bytes

September 17, 2015 By Jodi

I’m not big on decorating my house for holidays.

Okay, it’s true I do decorate the inside at Christmas, but rarely do I do any type of decorating on the outside.

So when I happened to be at the Home Depot with my grandchildren for their monthly workshop, they requested we go look at the Halloween items and I’m not really sure what came over me, but I found myself picking up a few items to decorate the house.

You saw the scarecrow in the #dogfallfun picture I posted on Monday. **Side note** Have you entered our Instagram contest yet? It’s not too late, I’d love for the winner to be one of you!

We took it out on the little balcony at the front of the house and I asked my little granddaughter where we should place it. She suggested in front of my bedroom window.

HELL NO! Do you know how many times a night I’d wake up, look out that window and crap my pants?

I convinced her to prop the scarecrow in the corner, by the slider (out of sight of any glass). I was perfectly content to leave it there, I mean in the past we’ve had things stolen from our vehicles and our yard and it would piss me off to walk the dogs up in the woods and find my scarecrow propped up staring at me. Not to mention the start I’d get from a distance thinking it was a real person.

But when I came home from work on Tuesday Hubby had the scarecrow and his sledgehammer.

“I thought I’d put this up, where do you want it?”

We debated it. He wanted it close to the house, but I was afraid it would startle mom if she looked out the window. (We don’t need her crapping her pants!)

Since I didn’t want it too far from the house, I suggested the middle of the lawn, on the other side of the sidewalk. Which meant it was in front of the front door.

She looks cute, right?

She looks cute, right?

This is going to bite me in the ass I thought to myself, but aloud I said, “It will probably drive the dogs crazy.”

In hindsight I should have taken the dogs outside immediately. During the daylight so they could check her out. But I didn’t.

Flash forward to 6:00 yesterday morning.

Did I remember that the fuggin’ scarecrow was out there?

No. No, I did not.

It’s been darker in the mornings now, and that makes it harder to get up, but I did. I’d been in that great zone, you know the one, where you sleep really good right before it’s time to wake up.

I got up, got the dog’s food ready, dressed myself and grabbed all my gear. I leashed up the dogs, opened the front door and all I can say, is thank DOG there is a storm door in place, because Delilah lost her shit.

LOST. HER. SHIT.

I took a deep breath, grasped the leashes tightly, opened the storm door and was dragged eight feet to the scarecrow, where she inspected it thoroughly.

What the woof are you doing on my lawn?

You let your mom dress you like that when you go out?

And then again when we got back home because there was more light and she could.

You don't smell like any dog I've ever sniffed.

No wonder you’re so stiff. You have a pole up your ass. You know that right?

I knew that’d  bite me in the ass.

Go Check

September 15, 2015 By Jodi

I love to watch Delilah just being a dog. Honestly, she is such an incredible athlete. When she runs, jumps or is just playing, she makes everything look so effortless.

Running -She’s so sleek when she runs, and fast. This dog is so fast and can turn on a dime.

  • A few years back on one of our wood walks, she was lagging behind. Hubby, Sampson and I had just taken a left on to one of the trails and we gave a shout for Delilah. We all turned to wait for her and here she comes a running with a deer hot on her heels. We all stood there, staring and she took the turn onto our path like it was nothing and the deer continued on the other path. (Hubby insists it only LOOKED like the deer was chasing her, that the deer was actually on a parallel path, but this is my blog, it’s my story and I’m sticking with the deer was chasing her.)
  • Once she ran up a rock that was almost vertical, she was just running around in the field, when suddenly she looked up at the top of the rock and just ran up it. Hubby and I stood there with out mouths open, a shocked expression on our faces.

Jumping – Delilah has mad jumping skills, she could easily jump over a five foot barrier. Thankfully she doesn’t know this, and please, do me a favor and don’t tell her.

  • There have been times when we’ve been walking in the woods and she’s jumped over a four foot wide, three foot high pile of brush like she was jumping over a puddle.
  • She once cleared the three foot high gate from the kitchen to the living room at our old house. No biggie, right? Wrong! The gate had two bar stools with backs that were 4 1/2 feet high, the seats of the stools were facing the gate and that added a width of 18 inches or so, AND they had laundry baskets on the seats. She sailed right over it. Like the cow jumping over the moon.

Besides the pure joy of just watching her running and being a dog, it’s so good for her physically. Running keeps her heart and her muscles in prime working order.

But sadly, after all the times she’s taken off on me, I can’t trust her off-leash like I can Sampson, so I’ve been working her with a command I call, “Go Check.”

It means exactly that. When she or Sampson spots something incredibly enticing and Sampson takes off to explore it, I will reach down and unclip her and say, “Go Check.” She now has permission to run and investigate and somehow, she knows that means it’s a quick sniff/look and then right back to me.

Here I come!

Here I come!

It’s little bursts of running, but it is something. I feel it’s a win-win, because she is doing something that she loves (and that I love to watch) and yet she is coming right back to me.

You Make Me Smile – September 13, 2015

September 13, 2015 By Jodi

You make me smile (or laugh), the sweet, funny, loving things my dogs do that make me smile or laugh.

Delilah, the way you wear your slobber like a fashion statement…

.

.

You make me smile.

I don’t know how she does it. She is constantly drooling on our walks and somehow she ALWAYS ends up wearing it.

Do you have droolers? Do they drool on their walks? What’s up with that?
