All Aboard the K9 Kamp Express

May 31, 2013 By Jodi

I mentioned yesterday that today’s post wouldn’t be my traditional Follow-Up Friday. No worries, no worries, the post will go off tomorrow and normal activities should resume next week.

The reason we’re deviating from our regularly scheduled blog post is easy, it’s K9 Kamp time!  Created and hosted by Kol’s Notes and Peggy’s Pet Place, it’s an awesome challenge designed to help you and your dog shape up.

I was first approached about this opportunity in the beginning of the month.  To say I’m honored to be asked is an understatement.  I’m thrilled beyond words as there are some amazing bloggers, some awesome sponsors and some truly great prizes.  k9kamp canine fitness blog challenge

For the K9 Kamp kick off we’ve been asked to share our reasons for getting involved and what our favorite activity for keeping fit is.

Well both of those are easy.  We’re getting involved because the health and well-being of our pets as well as you and your pets is important to us.

When Sampson first joined our family and was a little bit overweight I’d always say, “I’d rather have a fat dog that lives a shorter but happy life, than to have a skinny dog that doesn’t seem happy.”

That’s a very naive statement to make but very easy to say when your dog is a year old.  HOWEVER once that sweet little puppy begins to show signs of aging, well you quickly wish you could take back those extra treats and eat your words along with them.

Keeping your dog (and yourself) fit can be a real challenge. When Delilah’s health issues prompted us to make some major decisions, we decided to go all in.  That meant a very strict, monitored diet and daily exercise.

Diet is easy, but I can’t say the same for exercise.  The easiest one I know, that the dogs and I both enjoy is walking.

Sampson is less inclined to do anything more physical than walking, running or wrestling, but Delilah enjoys exercising her mind as well as her body.   Which is why she and I take classes every couple of months or so.  It gives her the opportunity to learn something new and entertains that chocolate brain of hers.

At Delilah’s annual exam last Thursday, she weighed in at a svelte 71.4 pounds, she’s even lost a half a pound or so since last year.  This tells me that our half-hour walks, and the choice of food and treats we are using are working well for her.

Since I have large dogs, it’s important to me that they maintain a healthy weight. This cuts down on their risk for certain diseases, as well as helps lower the stress on their bones and joints.  This is extremely important during the aging process.

One of my favorite photos but you can see how heavy they were.

One of my favorite photos but you can see how heavy they were.

In fact, when our vet first saw Sampson and Delilah after their dramatic weight loss (Sampson 25 pounds, Delilah 33 pounds) she exclaimed, “You deserve a medal for what you have done for these dogs, you’ve probably given them an additional two to three years of life.”

Now that is something I can get on board with.

Jodi and Peggy have the down and dirty on their blogs, so head on over and check it out. We’d really love it if you’d join us in this challenge, I mean really, what have you got to lose, except maybe the five pounds you’ve been trying to shake?

See you on the trails!

A Dog Walker’s Chinese Star

May 29, 2013 By Jodi

It was a four bag walk.

When the first deposit was made, I carefully picked it up, looping the bag into a knot, juggling it between managing Delilah’s leash and dispensing treats.

When the second deposit was made, I repeated steps one and two, then tied the two bags together.

Sampson and Delilah each did their business one more time, each time I picked up the poo, sequestered it in its own bag and then tied the bag to the others.

As I tied the fourth one in place, it hit me.

No….not the poop, the idea.

Safety is always a concern for me on our daily walks in the woods.  I worry about Stranger Danger, uncontrolled dogs and wild animals.  I always travel with my trusty little pepper blaster pistol in my back pocket, ready and willing to unleash a powerful blast of burning fury at the offending perpetrator.

Now staring at the baggies in my hand, I realized I held what equates to a dog walker’s Chinese Star.

Behold, the dog walker's weapon of choice.

Behold, the dog walker’s weapon of choice.

Drum roll please…..

Yes, it’s true.

My dogs are capable of producing Weapons of Ass Destruction, or WAD’s if you prefer.

Who needs a pepper blaster when you can easily wind the baggies up and hurl them like a shot-put?

Don’t believe me?  I didn’t think you would, so I made a little video to prove the WAD’s capabilities.

(If the video does not work, click here.)

Warning you need really good aim though, because these baggies are versatile but they’re not tough, and while they are warm to begin with, they are not heat seeking nor do they have lock capabilities.  Too hard of a toss or bad aim and you’ve got a…… mess of ass destruction on your hands.

(If the video does not work, click here.)

What do you think, should I apply for a patent?

Marrow Bones From Jones All Natural Chews

May 28, 2013 By Jodi

While I was at BlogPaws I stopped by the Jones Natural Chews booth to meet my friend Flea.

The folks at Jones were one of the sponsors of BlogPaws so naturally I left the booth with a couple of treats for Sampson and Delilah.

Imagine my surprise on Saturday when I was handed a bag with a variety of Jones treats to take home with me.

IMG_5048 One of the treats I was excited about were these marrow bones.

I figured once they got all the marrow out, I had another set of bones to pack with pumpkin.

Back story: We’d left my mother and niece in charge of the dogs, for 36 hours.  Thirty-six.  A day and a half.

All they had to do was to feed the dogs two meals, Saturday dinner and Sunday breakfast.  The meals were meticulously prepared and placed in plastic baggies in the refrigerator, and labeled, Sampson dinner, Delilah dinner.  You get the picture, right?

Hubby spent 25 minutes explaining to my niece the additional supplements each dog required.  (This was I think, the flaw in the plan.)

For those of you playing along at home here are the key points: 36 hours, 2 dogs, 4 meals.

Despite the instructions and the prepared food, the labeled baggies AND the fact that my mother has fed the dogs many times herself, somehow, incredibly Frick and Frack managed to feed the dogs three days worth of chicken necks for Sunday breakfast.

This equates to about 2 1/2 pounds.  EACH. Of chicken necks. In one meal.

Which I did not realize until after I’d fed them their dinner, when I went in the fridge to get their second course and noticed the individual baggies which I questioned Hubby about.

Hubby was furious and I have to admit I wasn’t too happy either.

I called my niece who was supposed to be in charge, but she had no explanation.

If I’d known about this before I fed them dinner, I wouldn’t have fed them.

Of course, Sampson and Delilah couldn’t understand why they didn’t get a snack on Sunday night.

Monday morning I held back on a full breakfast and called the vet, who recommended they get no more bones for a couple of days and suggested there might be a bit of straining as they tried to pass all that bone.  She advised straight meat and veggies for a couple of days.

Dogs on raw diet usually have a harder, more compact stool, so I watched and waited, waited and watched.  Finally on Wednesday there was no more bone in their stool.

Still we held off on the marrow bones, until Saturday night, and let me tell you, the dogs were excited to get them.

IMG_5051 Nom, nom, nom, what’d you make me wait for?

IMG_5053 Nom, nom, nom.

After about 15 minutes or so, I took the bones away, labeled a baggie for Sampson and another for Delilah and put the bones in the fridge.

I packed them with pumpkin and put them in the freezer the next day and they’ve been enjoying the same marrow bone for three nights now.

I’ve got a wedding in August I need to be gone five days for, anyone want to dog sit?

It’s Tasty Tuesday, hosted by Kol’s Notes and Sugar the Golden Retriever.
