There Will Be Cats

July 24, 2014 By Jodi

In Tuesday’s post, I shared an adventure Sampson, Delilah and I had on one of our walks.  It was a frustrating experience when someone let their two dogs out into their e-fence.  The resulting chaos was not exactly the way I like to start my day.

Besides the dog incident there were a couple of other interesting things that happened on that very walk.

The first happened before the dog encounter and the second after.

The first one was okay because Sampson and Delilah were too busy sniffing to be looking ahead on the road.  I on the other hand, am always looking, which is how I spotted it.  At first I was unsure.  Is that a small dog?  Did someone put something in the road?  But then it turned and as I watched it run off into the rising sun I realized it was a fox!

The dogs were oblivious until we got to the spot where the fox was standing and then they picked up his scent, but he was long gone by then.

The second incident was not okay.  Mostly because I was already pissed off about having lost the wrestling match and having to man handle my dogs away from the area and it could have turned out very badly.

So we get past the two crazy dogs and I can see there’s something up in the road, just lying there.  I can tell right away it’s a cat.

Yes, sometimes there will be cats on walks.

So from a safe distance of about three houses away I say, “Hey cat, you might want to move.”

The cat who was lying with its back to me, turned its head, looking over its right shoulder and then turned away. I’m getting the cat equivalent of the finger.

I slow the dogs down and try again, “Hey cat, I have two big dogs here, you may want to move.”

Obviously he lives with dogs because he is confident that his 12 pound self can easily take on two 70+ pound dogs.  He again looks over his should and again looks away.

“Hey CAT! Go! GET!”

By now both dogs are interested.  “There’s a cat Mama, I see a cat, let go of the leash, I Must. Chase. The. Cat.”

“Leave it!” I say.

I've heard they taste like chicken.

I’ve heard they taste like chicken.

Delilah is now at the end of the leash straining to get away.  I can’t turn around because we are only five minutes from home and turning around will be too much for Sampson who is also now straining to get to the cat.

Then it dawns on me.  This cat is fucking with me.

“Hey Garfield” I say, “I’ve got my hands full here trying to keep these two BIG dogs from making you their breakfast.  You can do me a solid if you just get up and walk away.”

That fucking cat is enjoying this.  He (I’m calling it a ‘he’ because he’s acting like a dick at this point) turns and once again gives me the cat equivalent of the finger and turns away.

I say, “Enough!” and “Leave it” and “Dirty old cat, probably has fleas anyway.”  Okay, I didn’t really say that last bit.

I ask Sampson to sit and he does.  Yay for me!  Delilah though, Delilah is still thinking this cat will be a tasty appetizer to hold her over until breakfast.

I gently grab her by the back of the neck and tell her again, “Leave it.” Nothing.

I’m frustrated now and I do something very dumb.  I lift her face up to mine and tell her, “That’s enough.”  I’m well aware how lucky I am that she didn’t bite my face off.

I finally pull out the big guns, the JNC Lamb Lungs and shove one in front of her face.

That worked.  And so we made our way home, where I promptly made some coffee and laced it with a healthy dose of whiskey.

How do your dogs do with cats on the walk?  How do you handle it?

Word count, I’ve added almost 400 words to my book between Tuesday and yesterday.  My total count is now 45, 149 words.

Happy 19th Birthday to Cokie the Cat!!

March 14, 2013 By Jodi

Back in December I was partnered with Cokie the Cat’s Blog for the Pet Blogger Gift Exchange hosted by Something Wagging This Way Comes.

cokielgfile Cokie, enjoying some down time.

I found out last week that today is Cokie’s 19th birthday, can you imagine?

I thought a song would be a really nice way to honor Cokie’s birthday, I started with the tune from the Beverly Hillbillies.

Come and listen to a story ‘bout a cat named Cokie

He wore a diaper but that’s no jokie.

But it just wasn’t working.

Then I thought, hmm maybe a children’s song, like Mary had a little lamb might be better.

Kristin had a little cat, little cat, little cat

Kristin had a little cat and Cokie was his name

They lived way out in Hollywood, Hollywood, Hollywood

They lived way out in Hollywood and Twitter was his game

Hmm working a bit better, but I couldn’t get beyond that.

Maybe something a little more modern, like One Direction’s What makes you beautiful.

So you’ve got fur, but your heart’s pure

When you run through the house you’re a blur

The way you tweet, you are so sweet

The kindness you show can’t be beat

Everyone else in the world can see it

Everyone else but you

Cokie you light up the world like nobody else

The way you structure a tweet makes our hearts melt

Nope, that fell short too.

I went back to the children’s rhyme.

There was a woman had a cat and Cokie was his name-o

C-O-K-I-E, C-O-K-I-E, C-O-K-I-E

And Cokie was his name-o

Her name was Kristin, her heart was true, she was the grandest dame-o

C-O-K-I-E, C-O-K-I-E, C-O-K-I-E

And Cokie was his name-o

They lived way out in Hollywood, and glamour was their game-o

C-O-K-I-E, C-O-K-I-E, C-O-K-I-E

And Cokie was his name-o

They had a blog, they loved to chat, Twitter was their claim to fame-o

C-O-K-I-E, C-O-K-I-E, C-O-K-I-E

And Cokie was his name-o

Today is his Nineteenth birthday, but this song is really lame-o

C-O-K-I-E, C-O-K-I-E, C-O-K-I-E

And Cokie was his name-o

I give up.

Instead I’ll just wish Cokie the happiest of birthdays, surrounded by everyone and everything he loves.

Thank you Cokie and Kristin for your kindness and generosity over these past four months, but most of all, I thank you for your friendship.

Happy, Happy Birthday!

Happy Birthday Used without permission from Kristin.  Of course I’ll remove it if she asks. 🙂

Do you know Cokie?  Have you wished him a Happy B’day yet?

Of Baths and Backs… (Day Ninety One)

March 1, 2011 By Jodi

Getting ready for our bath.

Do you give your dog(s) baths at home; take them to a groomers or use a self-wash?

If you are bathing your dog at home it is important to have all the items you will need BEFORE you put the dog in the tub.  Items you probably need include towels, wash clothes, shampoo, and a plastic container for rinsing.  Once the dog is in the bathroom you will want to shut the bathroom door and also doors to any other rooms you may not want them in once they are out of the tub.

Usually I bath the dogs at home, Sampson is very good and loves the tub and his bath; Delilah not so much.  We had a real dilemma three years ago when Chet tried to bathe Delilah while I was gone, the bathroom is quite small and Delilah fights the bath.  Chet threw his back out so bad that he was incapacitated for an entire week!  I came home and with a little Yankee ingenuity coaxed Delilah into the tub.

Delilah climbing into the tub.

I started by placing a few treats in the dry tub and I walked away.  She climbed in the tub and back out, I repeated the process until she was comfortable with the tub.  Then I put the stopper in and began filling it; I washed her as the tub was filling. Once she was cleaned and rinsed, I pulled the plug and toweled her off as best I could.  I make her wait in the tub and then I put the towel down on the floor and let her out, trying to dry off her feet, legs and underside.  Usually the dogs shake and that makes a huge water mess on all over the bathroom, but that is why you bring more than one towel.  I usually close off any rooms that I don’t want them going into while they are wet (Sampson loves to jump on the bed while he is all wet and rub himself all over it!)  Be extra careful because it is easy to slip on the wet floor.

We have also tried the self-wash, lots of daycares and training centers are offering the self-wash.  Julie use to take care of Sampson and Delilah at daycare until she left to open her own shop, luckily for us she let us use her facility  Julie’s Barks and Bubbles and was kind enough to allow me to take pictures.

The Professional Tub

There are steps leading up to the tub so you do not have to lift your dog.

Delilah in the tub

Sorry about her eyes, but as you can see in the picture, there is a place to tie the dog off, so she cannot escape and hurt herself.  A good self-wash should have everything you need to wash your dog, including the shampoo and towels; they will even have drying systems.

Sampson didn't mind the dryer at all!

I think he is even smiling in this shot.

I think the self-washes run about $15 per dog and if you have the extra cash, it saves a lot of wear and tear on yourself, the dog and your home.

Whichever way you choose to bathe your dog, be safe and happy washing.
