Trick or Treat Giveaway Hop

October 20, 2016 By Jodi

The Trick or Treat Giveaway Hop is a sponsored event. All brands and bloggers have provided compensation to be included in this giveaway. All content and opinions expressed are 100% my own and may not reflect the values of all brands and blogs involved. Sponsors include Caru, Nature’s Logic, and The Honest Kitchen.”

trick-or-treat-hop Trick or Treat.

When I was a kid, the whole premise of Trick or Treat was, you knocked on someone’s door, and said “Trick or Treat.” The idea was the nice person who was at the door, would give you a treat. Those folks that didn’t give you a treat, (or the ones who gave out APPLES and PENNIES) were fair game to have  some kind of dirty trick played on them. Like toilet papering their house or something.

Well times change (as we all know) and the devious bloggers at Kol’s Notes, and Beagles & Bargains, decided to put their own evil little spin on Trick or Treating. That’s right, they came up with a Trick or Treat blog hop, the key difference being, participating bloggers will be showing you how to train your dogs with tricks and YOU get the chance to win a $300 gift card to PetSmart and some amazingly awesome treats, by our sponsors at Caru, Nature’s Logic, The Honest Kitchen.

But this isn’t like your traditional blog hop where you link up. Oh no. You don’t have to do anything like that in order to win prizes. All you have to do is visit the participating bloggers and enter using the widgets on their blogs. Sounds easy, right?

I’ll give you the participating bloggers in a minute, right now I’m going to show you how easy it is to teach your dog a trick that I’m calling, “BOO!”

I read somewhere that if you have a dog that is exhibiting a behavior you aren’t particularly fond of, teach the dog to do the trick on command, and the dog will do the behavior less. It sounds good in theory, we’ll see how that works.

So Delilah has a habit of coming up behind me (or Hubby) and shoving her head between your legs. If you follow us on Instagram, you’ll have seen pictures of this. Personally, I think it’s adorable, unless I’m in the middle of bending over, or have, say, a hot cup of tea in my hand. You can see how that might be problematic, no?

I thought, let’s try and teach this on command and see how it goes.

Here’s what I did.

I started out with Delilah in a sit behind me. (When you look at the video you’ll notice I have to  redirect her a bit. I told you there were some tasty treats involved.)

I told Delilah to “Stay” and then I took a few steps away from her. (Remember, you want to start off easy and close, you can increase your distance over time.)

Once I was in position, I opened my legs and called her to me, and gave her the treat.

If your dog is hesitant, you can actually bend down and look at them from between your legs, this should be exciting enough for them to come to you. Or you can show them the treat and then toss it a few inches in front of you.

Once your dog has the idea of what you are expecting of them, you can add your cue word.

And that’s how we trained “BOO!”

Check out the video to see how it looks. (I apologize for the darkness and lack of clarity, and then annoying music that doesn’t stop, but I promise, I’m working on getting better!)

Well, that was pretty simple, right?
You may not get off so easily with some of the other tricks, but the good thing is you can get some awesome treats. Check it out.

So, if you’re looking for some great tricks to add to your dog’s resume, check out Kol’s Notes, Beagles and Bargains and these other awesome bloggers.

You Make Me Laugh – October 16, 2016

October 16, 2016 By Jodi

You make me laugh (or smile), the sweet, funny, loving things my dogs do on a daily basis that brings a smile to my face, or a laugh to my lips.

Sampson and Delilah, the way you stalk the chipmunks in the neighborhood…

You make me laugh.

Our neighborhood is over populated with chipmunks, they are everywhere. EVERYWHERE!

They have multiple holes and escape routes in every yard.

Our next door neighbor put a big rock over one of the holes in their yard, which was quite interesting to Sampson.

I can smell you.

I can smell you.

And then on Friday, Delilah heard them squeaking in the wooded area between our house and our neighbors. She stopped and listened intently, I think she was secretly hoping she could catch one.

And I can HEAR you.

And I can HEAR you.

I swear she would have gone bounding up there, given the opportunity.

Are your pets captivated by any smaller animals in your neighborhood?

Pet Blogger Showcase – October 15, 2016

October 15, 2016 By Jodi

Welcome to this week’s edition of the Pet Blogger Showcase.

Par for the course, I can’t whittle this list down to just three. I. Just. Can’t. So I picked three with an honorable.

All of the entries were just so good. I started reading and pasting links in and when I finished the pawty, I looked at the post and I had five. *SIGH* You guys make it hard!

So here we go!

Life with Dogs

Life with Dogs

Acupuncture with Bruiser by Christy Caplan at My Life with Dogs – I’m a firm believer in different modalities for treatment. For myself, I prefer to treat as naturally as possible and I carry that philosophy over to my dogs as well. Both of my dogs have had acupuncture and it has helped them both. If you’ve ever considered it, or wondered if it worked…wonder no more.

Meow Lifestyle

Meow Lifestyle

Cats of Istanbul by Jenna at Meow Lifestyle – I love reading how other countries handle their stray animals, I think we can learn a lot from different programs that other countries have in place. What surprised me about this post was how Istanbul has a trap/neuter/release program for dogs, but not for cats. In fact, the cats in Istanbul were more like dogs in the way they approach humans, while the dogs were the complete opposite!

All Things Collie

All Things Collie

A Danger to Any Dog by Kathleen Piro at All Things Collie – Bloat is one scary disease.  Most dogs die, either from the bloat itself, because their owners weren’t aware of the signs, or from surgery.  The only dog I’ve ever heard of that survived bloat was Thunder from Two Brown Dawgs, and that’s because Linda knew the signs. It’s such a serious disease that I’ve heard of Military dogs having their stomachs tacked to prevent it. If you have a dog that is on the high risk for bloat list, I encourage you to read this post and know the signs. Heck, even if your dog isn’t a high risk, know the symptoms and signs, you never know whose dog you could help save.

Honorable Mention:

Travels With Barley

Travels With Barley

That Guilty Feeling by  Beth at Travels With Barley – Because really, what owner hasn’t done something inadvertently to their pet, and then carried the guilt after?
