So We Have This Snake…

August 26, 2013 By Jodi

Neither Hubby nor I care for snakes.  Last year Sampson, Delilah and I came across a small garter snake on one of our walks.  I screamed, “Oh Oh” then “Leave it” while every hair on my body stood on end for at least five minutes.

There it happened again just thinking about it.

So when the Hubby showed me the photo of the snake in the wood pile, well you know my reaction.  I said it had to go and he said it ate spiders.  That’s a big payoff for me folks.  So now we have this snake in our wood pile.  The wood pile is off the deck so it’s a safe bet that Nagini (as I’ve named the snake) and I can live separate lives. Which is exactly how I want it.

And yes, as some of you pointed out Nagini is larger than most garter snakes I’ve seen and yes we know he eats more than spiders.  (For the sake of this article I will refer to Nagini as he.  More for my piece of mind then anything else, because the thought of a female making more snakes in my wood pile is too much for my little mind to comprehend.  Although I do love the idea of a female in a ‘wood’ pile, if you get my point. 😉 )  In fact, I’m betting Nagini has been helpful in cutting down on our mouse population.  No complaints on that front either.  Come to think of it, I haven’t seen the neighbor’s cat recently though…

For reference we have a large back yard and right now it looks like a jungle, so I’m fairly certain Nagini has been eating very well.

Nagini's feeding ground when he's not in the wood pile.

Hubby seems to be getting used to Nagini, in fact I took a picture of him outside working in close proximity to Nagini just the other day.

Brave or crazy? You be the judge.

Brave or crazy? You be the judge.

I was safely up on the deck taking pictures while Hubby was inches away from the snake.

After one of our bug infested walks I said to Hubby, “I was thinking of trying to clicker train Nagini, then I could put a leash on him and he could walk with us and eat all the bugs.”

Hubby responded with “You could wear him around your neck and he’d snap, snap, snap” and he made a motion of the snake moving from one side of my head to the other.

Let me think about that for a sec…”Um No.” Come on!  It’s a freaking snake!

On Thursday the guy came to spray our yard for ticks and apparently Nagini does not care for the smell.  He vacated his spot on the wood pile.

We thought, he’ll come back.

So Friday I went out to check after I got home.  Safely from my spot on the deck I peered over at the wood pile, but I couldn’t see Nagini.  I leaned over a bit and thought, that might be him.

And then I had a very scary thought.  I thought, maybe I can go down there and lift the tarp with a stick and see if the snake is there.

I know right?  WTF was I thinking?

I walk down from the deck and I could feel the hair on my arms standing up just a little at the thought of my boldness.  As I walked past the rack of already cut and stacked wood I saw something black out of the corner of my eye.  I screamed and jumped before I realized it was just the top of the rack.  It was at this point that I realized two things.

1) Nagini could not be seen on the wood pile

2) I wasn’t going to lift the tarp

I went back inside to wait for Hubby.

When he came home we both went outside and he said, “He’s not there, he’d be right there on that piece of wood.”

“Well maybe he moved somewhere else” I sighed.

Hubby lifted the tarp and moved along the wood pile.   “No he’s here.”

“Where?”

“Right here.”

“I can’t see him.”  Of course I couldn’t see him, he was on the far side of the wood pile at least 25 feet away and I was on the deck.

Hubby lifted the tarp a little higher and I leaned over the deck a little more and there, I saw him!

Hubby said, “I think he’s sleeping.” Then, “He’s not moving.”

And then Hubby reached out and touched the snake!!

“Oh my god!  Oh my god!  You touched it. ” I squealed, running for the house rubbing my arms to get the hair to lay flat. Nagini slithered further into the wood pile.

A few minutes later Hubby came inside, I was still beside myself.  “You touched it, you touched a SNAKE!”

Hubby said, “I have to use the bathroom.”

At which point I babbled something like, “Make sure to wash the snake off your hands before you touch your snake with your hands.”  Or something like that.

And then Hubby turned, looked right at me and licked his finger.

I lost my shit.

After my hysterical screams of “Oh my god, you’re disgusting, you licked a snake”  yadda yadda yadda Hubby said, I touched it with this finger (he held up his pointer) and I licked this finger and he flipped me the bird.

Yes, Nagini has become a source of amusement around our house.  Where do you find your humor in your daily life?

You Make Me Smile – August 24, 2013

August 24, 2013 By Jodi

This is my post that typically runs on Sunday. The Dogs of Blogville was supposed to run today but we had a little bit of a problem with a couple of photos submitted so I’m going to need another day. 🙁 No worries, you will still have one full week for voting.

You Make Me Smile

One of the big reasons I started this blog was for all the crazy, funny things my dogs do that bring a smile to my face or a laugh to my lips.

Sometimes it’s not easy to write a full blog post about it and sometimes I forget to share.

Some posts will be You Make Me Laugh and others will be You Make Me Smile, but they will all be the silly, sweet, funny things Sampson and Delilah do that help make crazy days just a little bit easier.

Feel free to share what your pet does to make you laugh/smile in the comments.

Delilah, when you stretch out across Daddy's pillow and lay your sweet head on my leg, you make me smile.

Delilah, when you stretch out across Daddy’s pillow and lay your sweet head on my leg, you make me smile.

It also melts my heart and makes me sigh with contentment.

What are some of the cute things your ‘babies’ do when they snuggle in for a snooze?

Follow-Up Friday – August 23, 2013

August 23, 2013 By Jodi

Welcome to Follow-Up Friday, the blog hop that let’s you wrap up your week and leads you right into the weekend.

Joining me this week is my sweet friend JoAnn from Sand Spring Chesapeakes.  I love reading about JoAnn’s adventures with Gambler, Glory, Nellie and her heart dog Norman.  Not to mention her new little kittie, MK.

Follow-Up Friday Has Fleas

Jackie asked, “Why aren’t you supposed to bend down so much? Is that a “rule” when dancing with your dog?”

I’m not really sure, I’ll throw this question out to all my professional friends out there. 😀

Hoarders the Delilah Edition

Jackie said, “Rita likes her toys strewn about! I pick them all up and toss them back in her basket or on her bed, and then she’ll plop down in the middle of them. Wish I could train her to put them away!”

When Sampson first came to live with us, he took all his toys and put them in his crate.  I figured it was because he came from a litter of 10 and never had anything that was HIS.  Of course, he doesn’t do THAT anymore!

Those of you with multiple dogs know that sometimes hoarding can become an  issue. Thankfully Sampson is so easy going he basically lets her do what she wants.  We do monitor the situation though to make sure that his treat is already done before she does her quality control check.

Troll in the Dungeons

For those who follow me on Facebook you’ll know I’ve named the snake Nagini, after Voldemort’s snake in the Harry Potter series.  Apparently Nagini is the name of the snake in Riki Tiki Tavi, but I read that story so long ago I can barely remember it.  I just remember being terrified for the little mongoose.

I am planning a whole post on Nagini which should be on Monday, so I’ll respond to questions then and also tell you a bit about what’s been going on at our house with Nagini.

And for those who might have been wondering, my Mama has assured me that there is NO Troll in our basement.

I Feel Like a Number

All Things Collie said, “I know how you feel. I ended up blocking one FB friend, because all she posted 24/7 were pictures of dogs who were about to be euthanized.”

There is a newly formed rescue in my town and I friended her page on FB.  She posts dogs and I saw one post of hers where she said something along the lines of SHARE THEM ALL.  But the reality is, it’s a fine line between sharing and inundating and inundating can turn people off.

2 Brown Dawgs asked, “I take it they have to wait 10 days for quarantine to be up?”

I imagine that is the case, I’ve never actually checked. 🙁

Many of you shared my sadness and sense of hopelessness.  When you start looking at the number of homeless animals in this world it can be very depressing and overwhelming.

I had to share this comment from Shoes on the Wrong Feet.  I cried when I read it, but in a good way.

“As you just learned from my blog, we adopted a rescue dog several weeks ago. I do not know anyone who has a rescue dog or any experience with one – except you (not that I actually know you – real life know you.) I thought of you and Delilah and the story you told about her being transported and the scary, terror of it all, as we petted and loved on Haley. In a way your story, your experience helped prompt me to open my arms to Haley and invite her into her forever home.”

“You do make a difference, Jodi, you do.”

Thank you Shoes, you will never know how much that means to me.

I want you all to know that you too make a difference.  It may not seem like it sometimes and sometimes it is very overwhelming but you ARE making a difference.

Jessica shared that one of the dogs she spotlighted has been adopted.

It does work!

No More Pictures

I had a couple of other pictures that might have worked, but unfortunately they are still on my old computer.

Dawn said, “The one I submitted of my Maya is still cute. But if most of the pictures you received are even half as gorgeous as the ones you took of Delilah and Sampson then my Maya’s photo probably doesn’t stand a chance.”

This contest is all about YOU getting your friends and fans to vote.  It really has nothing to do with how cute the photo is.  It’s sort of like Bristol Palin on Dancing With the Stars.  She had no real talent, but she had a mommy with quite a following. 😉

Molly the Wally said, “It is going to be epic this year. YEA!!!!!”

I think you’re right Molly, it IS going to be epic!

Side note: Does anyone know Pippa the Sheltie?  Her mom sent a picture that is too small.  Julie and I have both sent e-mails and I’ve left a comment on her blog, but we haven’t had any success in contacting her.  I’d hate to have her miss the contest.

This ‘N That Thursday

Animal Couriers asked, “Poor old Samson – has he had this treatment before?”

No, the last time he went in for his paw he was treated with an anti-inflammatory, and the Holistic Vet gave him some skin drops and liver detox drops.  The drops helped for a bit, then they stopped working.

Emma said, ” If you ever notice one of the pups starting to lick all the time, put some Desenex Athletes Foot Powder on the area.”

She got this tip from a breeder.  Thank you so much for sharing that Emma!

Pam said, “It’s hard for me not to edit my photos in some way or another. Like hey, this is a perfect picture… you know, except for that whole giant eye booger thing.”

Okay this was my mistake.  I should have told you this, I’m putting it on my list for next year’s contest. Julie can take things out of photos.  My photo from last year had a paper bag in it but Julie removed it so it didn’t show up on the calendar.

We know that some people are really good with photo editing while others are not and we are trying to keep the playing field as even as possible.

Here is my picture from last year.

The paper bag did not make an appearance in the calendar.

That’s it for this edition of Follow-Up Friday, many thanks to Sand Spring Chesapeakes for co-hosting!  Have a great weekend!
