Jump Mama

October 16, 2013 By Jodi

K-9 Kamp Kounselor Delilah here again, updating you on all the things we are doing to get fit and keep K-9 Kamp F.U.N.

In case you’ve been living under a rock, this month is our 2nd installment of K-9 Kamp.  A great challenge hosted by our friends Koly and Felix at Kol’s Notes, Kelly and Ike at Peggy’s Pet Place and Gretel and Chester at You Did What With Your Weiner.

k9kampbadge-300x300 Right now we are still taking advantage of walks in the woods after The Mama gets home from work.  If she gets right to it and doesn’t diddle around, we have just enough time for a 30 to 40 minute walk.

Even so, we’ve been working on some fun things to do with The Mama to help her get into shape, as well as keeping Sampson and me, healthy and active as well.

One of my new favorite games to play with The Mama is a little game I developed called, jump the leash.

It works like this.  The Mama is always holding the leash in her left hand, so I with my Ninja like Lab skills, will dart around behind her back, and then cut across her path so she has to jump the leash.

When I do this I say, “Jump Mama”

And The Mama says, “How high, Delilah?”

The Mama: Excuse me?  I do not say that!

Um, I’m pretty sure you do Mama.

Um, I’m pretty sure I don’t Delilah.  And the reason I know this, is I am too busy trying to draw air into my lungs and keep from falling on my ass.

You say Toe-may-toe and I say Toe-ma-toe Mama.  I guess we’ll just have to agree to disagree.  And Mama?

Yes Delilah.

Remember all those times you said, “Give me five minutes Delilah, I’m trying to finish a blog post?

Um…..yes?

In case you weren’t aware, I’m busy working on my latest K-9 Kamp post.  People and dogs are relying on me to help them get into shape and stay motivated.  Give me five minutes please Mama.

Excuse the interruption, The Mama struggles with not being in control.  Anyhoo the leaves are falling fast and furious in our little neck of the woods and we have to be super careful when we are walking because the leaves make the trails slippery, especially when we are going downhill.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA So whenever possible we try and stick to the flatter areas, although against my better judgement I have let The Mama off-leash a couple of times.  Just to get down the steepest part of the hills mind you.

Wherever we are, you can be sure we work The Mama hard, to make sure she’s going over, under or around various obstacles.

The harder part is getting her to move along at a good pace, she’s still a little on the S.L.O.W side.

So how are you all doing with your K-9 Kamp?  Are you helping your humans get in shape or are you just keeping score at home?

Don’t Be a Dick

October 15, 2013 By Jodi

Today is October 15th, which means it’s time for Be the Change for Animals. A day when bloggers unite to shine their lights on causes near and dear to our hearts in hopes of affecting real change for animals.

Blog the Change

I struggled with this one, I really did.  I mean, there are so many things that need to change in animal welfare it’s hard to choose just one.

While driving to a baby shower on Sunday we passed a house with a sign out front that said, “Free kittens.”  I thought perhaps I could focus on educating people about the hazards of offering animals for free, whether it be in the paper, online or via a sign in their front yard.

I mean we’ve all heard the stories of puppies or dogs offered for free, only to find out they wound up used as bait dogs for fighting rings, or were tortured and killed.  I’m sure those devious folks could find ways to use cats and kittens as well.

I made a mental note to myself to find the petition asking Craig’s List to stop taking ads for free animals.

Yesterday was Hubby’s birthday and I got super busy when I got home, so sadly the post I had planned for today didn’t happen.

But I happened to have this little gem come across my facebook page yesterday and thought it might tie in nicely with Be the Change.

Don't be a Dick This was originally (as far as I can tell) shared by Ashley Moore a vet tech at Vogel Veterinary Hospital.

Now before you go getting your panties in a bunch, I know that some of you have dogs that are not spayed/neutered.  I am also aware that some of you breed your dogs, and you are responsible dog owners that are not letting your dogs run willy nilly wherever they like, humping anything in sight.  I know that puppies your dogs are having/siring are NOT being dumped at shelters.  I’m cool with those of you who are breeding your dogs responsibly and for the betterment of the breed.

I am not speaking to you.

I am speaking to those who for whatever reason are letting their pets have litter after litter of unwanted animals.  Animals that end up in shelters where they are killed by the thousands.

Perhaps they are unaware that there are low cost spay neuter clinics available. If that’s the case and you have a pet that needs neutering and cannot afford to take it to a traditional vet, let me know.  I will help you find a low cost spay neuter clinic in your area.

If that is not the case, I beg you to educate yourself.

Don’t be a Dick.

Oh Lord, My Water Broke

October 14, 2013 By Jodi

I walked out of the bedroom door and said, “WTF is this wet spot on the floor?”

IMG_5313

My first thought was that my water had broken, but I knew that was wrong because 1) my pants weren’t wet, 2) the puddle was in front of me, not under me and last but certainly not least, I wasn’t pregnant.

My second thought was someone had an accident.

On the rug.

In front of the bedroom door, NOT in front of the ‘go outside’ door.

Then I looked up and saw the empty ice cream container.  The one I’d filled with water and left in the sink to clean out before recycling.

Yup it was clean.

A couple feet away was the cover.

IMG_5314 Wow that was clean too.

I was pretty certain I’d left it in the sink.  In fact, I know I didn’t leave it on the floor.

Oh that delightful lab, Delilah with her mad lab skills carried a half-gallon ice cream container full of water, about fifteen feet BEFORE she spilled any.

Why she spilled it there is beyond me.  My guess?  She bumped into the bedroom door and dropped it.

I told you she had mad skills.
