The One – Barks and Bytes

July 30, 2015 By Jodi

Eleven years ago in a small town in Connecticut a litter of ten puppies was born to a beautiful Golden Retriever named Casey. Half the puppies favored their father with their sleek black fur, while the other half favored their mom and her beautiful golden coat.

.

.

A few towns over a lady waited. She had heard about the anticipated litter of puppies and was anxious for their arrival. This lady had lost her dog the year before and her children had all left home, she was lonely and wanted a puppy to share her life with.

When word reached the woman about the puppies’ birth, she instantly said, “I want a Golden male.” Since there was only one Golden male, he was “The One.”

The woman was so happy the day she brought the puppy home. His birth name was Toby, but the woman renamed him, “Sampson.”

.

.

Sampson was a happy, easy-going puppy. He and his Mama, (as she called herself) spent a lot of time together. Mama couldn’t wait to come home from work to take Sampson for a walk or cuddle up together.

The Mama took him to training classes and Sampson learned a lot of different things, but mostly he learned that his Mama loved him very much.

On the weekends his Mama didn’t want to do anything but spend time with him. She convinced her Husband (The Daddy) to start hiking together, and every weekend became a grand adventure.

.

.

Sampson loved hiking there were so many amazing things to see and smell!

Sampson’s Mama and Daddy loved him so much. They did many wonderful things together as a family.

Eventually the Mama got a companion for Sampson so he wouldn’t be alone during the day. The Mama sometimes questioned that decision because the new dog, Delilah, was challenging, but the Mama knew with lots of love and patience she’d win Delilah over.

Because Sampson had already shown her what love could do.

Happy Birthday Sampson.  You are the guy who gave me a reason to get up every morning, You’ve taught me to embrace life, and brought laughter and happiness into my life every single day we’ve been together. I really was lost before you, but you gave me hope, and helped me find my humanity when the world had beaten it out of me. You are my joy and inspiration and above all, you are the Heart in Heart Like a Dog.

.

.

.

.

I love you to the moon and back.

Mama

Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da, Omegease…

July 29, 2015 By Jodi

This is a sponsored post.  I have been compensated with product in exchange for my honest opinion.  That being said, I would never share something with you that I don’t fully endorse and use myself.

Probably one of the biggest dislikes I have to living with dogs is watching them age.

Sampson bless his sweet little heart will be 11 tomorrow.

I couldn’t honestly tell you where the time went, it seems like just yesterday when I first held the little nugget and promptly fell in love.

Golden Lab Puppy

Baby Sam, how could you not fall in love?

The D-Dog, if you can imagine will be 10 in December. Sadly I have no puppy pictures of her, but I can tell you she was definitely a 67 pound puppy when she came to us.

I’ve often written about how different my dogs are in personality, but they are also total opposites in body style. Sampson is broad in the chest and tiny in the waist and hips. This dog is not meant for jumping or even running really. When we come back from our walks, he lies on the floor panting, and it takes him at least a half an hour to recover.

Delilah on the other hand was built for speed, she is all athlete that one. She might be panting on our walk, but once she’s home, her breathing returns to normal within a couple of minutes. And jump? Damn but that girl can jump. I once saw her go from a sitting position on the floor to a sitting position in a bay window exactly the same way a cat would. She really is amazing.

Dogs (just like humans) often need a little somethin’ somethin’ to help them as they age. Sampson tore his ACL last year and since that time has struggled with strained illiosoas muscles and arthritis. Last fall we started Sampson on Rejenease by Finest for Dogs. If you missed that post, you can read about it HERE. (There is also a discount code for 25% off your first bottle and you can find that in the post also.  OH and there is also a weekly giveaway for a free bottle, you can find that HERE.) The Rejenease was what helped Sampson over the hump with the ACL recovery. Honestly, I don’t know where we’d be at if not for the Rejenease.

A short time ago Steven from Finest for Dogs asked if we’d be willing to try out his new product, Omegease. At first I was confused (I’m not the brightest bulb in the box), so I asked Steven. Do I use this INSTEAD of Rejenease or IN CONJUNCTION with it? Steven (who is always quick to respond) said, “In conjunction with it.”

Let me just go on record as saying the Omegease fits just about all of my requirements in terms of product I can stand behind.

The anchovies, sardines, herring and mackerel are wild caught (using dolphin friendly methods) in the North Atlantic off the coast of Iceland. Wild caught wins over farm raised any day of the week for me. In fact, I will not purchase farm-raised fish for myself. The very thought of it makes me sick to my stomach. The fact they are taking care not to harm dolphins in the process? That’s priceless in my book.

Plus Omegease is GMP certified and manufactured right here in the good ole’ US of A.

The package touts the benefits as follows:

• Improves skin and coat condition
• Thickens fur and reduces shedding
• Increases endurance and heart health
• Boosts the immune system, reducing allergies
• Improve cognitive function in older dogs
• Helps dogs with kidney disease
• Lowers blood pressure and triglycerides
• Fights cancer
• Helps with Inflammatory Bowel Disease
• Lubricates and supports healthy joints

As you can see a lot of the benefits of Omegease are helping behind the scenes, in ways not necessarily visible to our eyes. (Sort of like raising kids. You’re not really sure they got much of what you taught them until you see the final results.) 😉

A little over a month ago, we started Sampson and Delilah on the Omegease. The bottle says typical results are three to four weeks. Well here we are five weeks later…so what have I seen?

Well there is definitely less shedding. Before starting the Omegease Delilah’s hind end looked like she was blowing her coat, and no matter how many times I combed it, I couldn’t get it to stop. During one of our visits to the vet, one of the techs took a large comb and finally got them out. They haven’t been back since.

Because I use a natural flea and tick spray, when we come home from a wood walk I comb the dogs out. I had been getting a lot of dander in the fur that came out on the comb, but since adding the Omegease to their diet, I see less and less dander.

Sampson and Delilah get two walks per day, each walk is usually 25 to 30 minutes long. Our first walk is at 6:00 am and our second walk is usually around 2:00 pm. Last week we had a little issue in our yard (Hubby discovered a bee’s nest) and while Hubby worked to remove this from our yard and make it safe for all of us, we had to go out with the dogs to make sure they avoided the area. I decided to take the dogs out front, so I put Delilah on leash and out we went.

Sampson was off-leash, while Delilah and I headed down to the little patch in front. After Delilah did her business we turned around and headed back. Delilah started walking in the street and when we reached the end of the driveway, Sampson trotted out with a jaunty little step all set and ready to go for a third walk! I had to laugh, it was so damn cute. I also notice he doesn’t seem to be as slow to get up as he has been in the past.

All in all I’m saying the Omegease is working pretty well.

Besides the great bennies to my dogs, what I also liked was the Omegease comes in a handy pump bottle, with simple directions. The dosage is measured by your dog’s weight, Sampson gets two and a half pumps, while Delilah gets two.

The bottle does NOT have to be refrigerated, it sits right on my counter top next to their other supplements. Sometimes when I add a new supplement it’s tough to work it into my daily routine, having the bottle right on the counter makes it that much easier to remember.

What I didn’t like is the pump. If you don’t get that last drop out, it can drip on your counter and leave a bit of a mess. I have to remember to give the bottle a little shake before setting it back down.  (Remember, if you shake it more than four times, that’s playing with it, as my mother-in-law used to say.) 😉

Are you ready to try some Omegease? Steve has generously agreed to give 5 (yes that’s right, five!) lucky readers a free bottle to try!  All you have to do is leave me a comment telling me which dog you want try this supplement with.  This is a deal breaker folks, comments that do not list the dog’s name will not be considered in the drawing.

I'm a happy dog since I started taking Omegease.

I’m a happy dog since I started taking Omegease.

For an extra entry into the contest, share this post on Facebook (you’ll find buttons at the bottom of this post) and tag either me personally, or Heart Like a Dog and I’ll be sure to give you an extra entry.

Omegease is available on Amazon and Amazon only ships to the US so sorry my friends, this contest is only open in the US.

BUT WAIT, there’s more.  If you don’t want to wait to see if you’re a winner, Steve is giving Heart Like a Dog readers a 30% discount, which is available for one bottle.  This discount will be available until January 31, 2016.

Here’s how it works.  Once you’ve added Omegease to your cart select the “FREE shipping” option.  If you are an Amazon Prime member you automatically get free shipping.

On the final “Place Your Order” page, there is a “Gift cards & promotional codes” box.  This is where you enter the code, “JODISAVE”, click apply and it will automatically take 30% off your first bottle of Omease.

Isn’t that awesome?  I can’t wait until some of you start using it, and hear how well it works for you.

UPDATE: Steven has informed me that there has been a problem with damage to his 16 oz bottles of Omegease, so Amazon has suspended sales but ONLY on the 16 oz bottle. The 32 ox bottles are still available!

AND FYI: STEVEN IS READING AND RESPONDING TO QUESTIONS, SO IF YOU HAVE ANY, PLEASE FEEL FREE TO LEAVE THEM IN THE COMMENTS.

Some of the mumbo jumbo I have to add. I make the rules. Rules are subject to change. The contest will be open until next Friday, August 7, 2015 at 11:59 PM EST.  Winners will be notified via e-mail and I will also announce them some time the week of August 10, 2015.

You Make Me Laugh – July 26, 2014

July 26, 2015 By Jodi

You make me laugh (or smile), the sweet, funny, loving things my dogs do on a daily basis that brings a smile to my face, or a laugh to my lips.

Sampson, the way you destuff Mr. Hedgehog, then bury your face in it so it looks like you have a beard…

Golden Lab with Beard

.

You make me laugh.

The other morning Sampson decided it was time for Mr. Hedgehog to be destuffed, when he caught me watching him, he put his head down and it looked exactly like he had a beard. Of course I burst out laughing.

What do your pets do with their empty stuffies?
