WHY – Barks and Bytes

March 24, 2016 By Jodi

I apologize in advance to my savvy vet tech readers. And if by some crazy chance a veterinarian actually reads this and you yourself are savvy, I apologize to you as well. As a dog owner and lover, I think there are some things I shouldn’t have to explain when I’m with my dogs at the vet.

Specifically:

Why all dogs should be on leash in common areas.

One would think this was a no-brainer, no? It’s actually happened to me.

Twice.

The first time it happened was when I took Sampson in for his surgical consult. While my poor lame dog was stressed out and waiting to be seen, two GSD’s and a Pug came charging up to him after having an exam room door opened. There was a lot of loud dog noises, which ended when I screamed, “HEY!” at the top of my lungs.

Afterwards the receptionist told me, “We’ve told him they have to be on leash, but he doesn’t listen.” I told her if it had it been Delilah it may not have turned out so well.

The second time was recently at my own vet when I went in to pick up Sampson from one of his tests.

A cute little off-leash dog came running up to me while I was waiting. The woman called the dog over, leashed her up and was then called into the exam room. I asked the ladies at the front desk about it and they kind of just shrugged.

Do people in the animal industry NOT understand that not all dogs or owners are comfortable meeting other dogs?

Delilah’s titchy. Sometimes she’s fine, other times she’s not. I prefer just to avoid the situation all together. It just makes it easier.

Sampson loves other dogs, but he gets so excited to meet them, that he bounces about and pulls me. It’s just not a pretty, nor pleasant experience. Never mind the fact that if two dogs don’t like each other, and either a dog or human gets hurt, there is a liability issue.

Look...no props, no background. You call that photography?

Hey, you don’t like every person YOU meet, why should I like EVERY DOG I meet?

Last week when I took Sampson in for Physical Therapy, there was a woman standing in the doorway of an exam room with her dog in her arms, and I had to walk Sampson past her. I said, “Can you go in the room?”

I think the Physical Therapist was taken aback because she smiled at me and said, “We have to share.”

I don’t mind sharing, but I know my dog and I know what I can and can’t do with him. Not to mention, the other dog was much higher up than my dog, and they were already encroaching into a hallway which was narrow to begin with and my dog is injured.

I’m certainly not comfortable in that situation and I’m not sure how comfortable my dog is, so to me it’s best to eliminate as many risk factors as I can.

Hey, at least I asked the woman nicely, I mean, I didn’t go all backwoods hood rat on her ass. 🙂

Rat-a-tat-tat-tat

March 22, 2016 By Jodi

Yesterday was the second day of spring.

Our weather forecasters waffled all weekend. We might have snow, it might be a slushy mix, we were getting a Nor’easter. I decided to take the wait and see approach.

When I got up and looked out my window yesterday morning we’d gotten about four or five inches of snow.

I took Sampson out first. One of the big reasons we walk, is to help get things moving along…if you get my drift.

Being on short walks, Sampson usually does his business within the first five minutes. Yesterday was no exception, and Sampson decided to do his business in the deep snow.

So there’s a reason it’s called a steamer. The poop is leaving a body with temperature of approximately 101 to 102 degrees and hitting air temperature of 28 degrees. AND when something hot hits the snow…well it basically just drops.

Simplified:

The snow is cold.
The poop is hot.
When poop hits snow,
It just drop, drop, drops.

Trying to pick something up that keeps melting the snow around it can be quite challenging. Let’s just say it took me a few minutes and I ended up with a bunch of snow in the bag.

SO when Delilah decided to go under a tree where the snow wasn’t so deep, I was super grateful.

Picking her business up was much easier than Sampson’s, with the exception of her kicking. Delilah tends to kick stuff over her business. (Even though I’m picking it up!)

Typically I know exactly when she’s going to kick and I take evasive maneuvers to avoid whatever it is she’s kicking, dirt, grass…SNOW.

But it was 6:00 am, and apparently I wasn’t quite awake. So I bent over to pick up the poopies and it was like someone was shooting paint balls at my ass.

Rat-a-tat-tat-tat-tat-tat-tat-tat.

I stood up and hissed at her, “Will you please stop pummeling my ass.”

Where's that friggin' coat you promised me?

Well I can’t flush it. As you love to point out, I don’t have opposable thumbs!

Does anyone else have these kinds of problems?

You Make Me Laugh – March 20, 2016

March 20, 2016 By Jodi

You make me laugh (or smile), the sweet, funny, loving things my dogs do on a daily basis, that brings a smile to my face, or a laugh to my lips.

Sampson, the way you focus on the dog, and ignore everyone else around you…

Golden Labrador

You make me laugh.

Yesterday was my niece’s birthday and since she adores Sampson and he adores her, I thought it would be nice to stop by on our way home from rehab, and wish her a Happy Birthday in person.

They were both thrilled and my niece climbed in the car and everything was hunky dory. UNTIL my sister came out with her dog, Mo. Sampson and Mo gave each other a good sniffing and then my sister brought Mo back inside.

And then everything else was ignored as Sampson stared at my sister’s door, until she brought Mo back. Then the two of them had a Mexican stand-off while my niece and I laughed ourselves silly in the car.

Do your dogs get focused like Sampson?
