Let Sleeping Dogs Lie – Throwback Thursday

July 21, 2016 By Jodi

I love going through posts for Throwback Thursday. It gives me the opportunity to see where I’ve improved in my writing, and how my point of view has/has not changed.

I’ve also noticed that I posted about sleeping.

A lot!

Let Sleeping Dogs Lie Original posting date: October 18, 2011.

Where does your dog sleep?

Our dogs sleep in their bed and we sleep with them; at least that is what they would lead you to believe.

We have an over-sized queen bed; that uncomfortably fits all fur of us.

When Delilah first joined our pack we struggled with her jumping on the bed. I would get up and pull her off at least five times during the night. It was a battle fought and won by persistence. Hers.

Once the battle was won; we needed a nightly routine in order to ensure we at least had a chance to get a spot on the bed; it starts with Sampson and I in the bed. Sometimes Delilah is there too, but as soon as she thinks I’m heading her way she usually gets up and sits beside the bed.

I position myself; then using carrots, I lure Sampson up the bed toward his pillow, each time Sampson gets a carrot Delilah does as well.

After about three carrots I have Sampson where I want him and I say, “Okay, pretty come on.” Up she jumps to the bottom of the bed where most of the time she curls up on MY feet. If I move too quickly because I don’t have my feet in position before she gets settled; my darling diva growls at me.

I try to manage her by reaching down and petting her while I position my feet; the surprising thing is if I move during the night, she normally doesn’t growl. Go figure.

Sampson meanwhile has chosen a parent to lean against. He stretches his legs straight out against the other parent’s back. In this manner we go to sleep, Hubby clinging desperately to one side of the bed, while I cling to other and Sampson sleeping blissfully between.

It surprises me that this doesn’t upset me. In fact there are times when I wake up in the night to find his head tucked under my chin or resting on my shoulder and I smile. I. Smile. In. The. Middle. Of. The. Night.

Or my legs ache from remaining in one spot for too long, or my butt is freezing because it is hanging off the bed and I laugh. To myself of course, but I laugh.

Last night I rolled over and Sampson was facing me; I took the opportunity to give him a little good night kiss, he shifted his position and put his nose right up to my nose, typically this would freak me out; (if I can’t breathe cool air I wig) instead, I snuggled closer and I smiled.

Please keep the typing to a minimum...I'm trying to sleep.

Please keep the typing to a minimum…I’m trying to sleep.

Almost five years later, and I still have sleep stories. And I still smile in the night if I wake up and there is a dog cuddled up against me.

Are you one of those crazy dog moms like me, who likes their dog cuddled up against them?

Murphy’s Law of Dog Walking

July 19, 2016 By Jodi

Murphy’s law is an adage or epigram that is typically stated as: Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong. Source

I observe a lot of things when I’m out walking my dogs. Truly if you read this blog at all, you know our walks are usually pretty entertaining.

Some general things I observe are what I like to refer to as, “The Murphy’s Law of Dog Walking.”

Sometimes ya just gotta laugh.

Sometimes ya just gotta laugh.

Your dog will more than likely go where no man has gone before – example: if they can squish themselves under a bush or between two rocks, yup, that’s the place to do their ‘doody.’ (Yeah thanks, and I thought squeezing into some dressing rooms was hard.)

The softest, loosest poop will be in the yard with the longest grass, making it next to impossible to remove from your neighbor’s lawn without removing a good bit of their grass. (You’re welcome for trimming that bit of yard you lazy ass.)

You don’t look at your dog before bending down to scoop and wind up with a mouth or face full of dirt and leaves, when they decide to ‘cover’ it up. If it’s your lucky day, there’s no poop, rocks or sticks in it.

The day you don’t see that squirrel? Your dog will, requiring a trip to the emergency room to have your dislocated shoulder painfully snapped back in place. (Where did ALL the damn squirrels come from anyway?) A few years back we had practically no squirrels at all, now our neighborhood looks like there’s a fire sale at the peanut factory. You better run, Squirrel.

That light and gentle rain that began when you first started your walk, will turn into a deluge when and only when, you’re at the half-way mark of your walk. Shoulda grabbed a hat.

Trying to swat bugs with a bag of dog shit in your hand will result with you knocking yourself in the head or face with said bag. (Thank dog for lavender scented bags.)

You will walk past house after house and your dog will decide to poop at the only house where the owner is outside. Or they will stop to squat, right as the person opens their door to step outside. “Hi, how you doing? I’ll just pick this up and be on my way.”

That one morning you decide to walk on the side of the street with the e-fence dog, that is the day that the door opens and the dog comes charging out at you. Well that picked up my heart rate, probably burned 100 calories right there.

I’m sure there’s more and I’ll jot them down as I think of them. What about you, do you have any Murphy’s Laws of Dog Walking to add?

You Make Me Laugh – July 17, 2016

July 17, 2016 By Jodi

You make me laugh (or smile), the sweet, funny, loving things my dogs do on a daily basis, that brings a smile to my face, or a laugh to my lips.

Delilah, when you smile and you remind me of my ex-mother-in-law…

Chocolate Labrador

You make me laugh.

I don’t know why, but sometimes when Delilah smiles, she reminds me of my ex-mother-in-law. I think it’s something about the way the lips position themselves around the teeth, but whatever it is, the expression on her face in this picture made me laugh.

Do you ever look at your pet and get reminded of a person? It’s weird, right?
