Blue Sky Day

October 26, 2016 By Jodi

Those of you that follow us The Instagram or The Facebook, already heard this news, but I just have to share it here.

Since Sampson did a partial cruciate tear back in January (nine LONG months ago,) our walks have been timed. Initially, we started out at five minutes, and gradually, over time we worked ourselves up to eight minutes out and however long it took to get back. A few months ago, Sampson saw our vet, and she felt he was still struggling with strained Iliosoas muscles, and it wasn’t the right time to increase his walks.

So in the last few months, I’ve made some changes in our routine. Mostly, we are playing with meds and supplements to see what works best for him, but I also started giving him some leg massages, and they seemed to help. (I will have a future post on exactly what supplements and treatments we used.)

It was also a hot and humid summer, and Sampson does not like hot and humid, so he was quite content with the small walks, and visits to his favorite people around our neighborhood.

Sampson has always loved the cooler weather. When he was a puppy, he would often times sit outside in the snow. Just sit there.

It turned cooler this past weekend and Sunday was awesome, I’m calling it “A Blue Sky Day.”

My Bubbers climbed into bed with me, and we snuggled for about 2o minutes.

After that we got up to take our walk. The morning was cool, and crisp. I’m not sure if it was the cooler weather, or the fact that our morning walk took place in sunshine (as opposed to the dark,) or hell, maybe just our hard work and diligence has paid off. All I can say is my boy had such a pep in his step, that when my eight minute timer went off, we were only a couple of houses away from the top of the hill.

Three more houses and we would hit the flat part, and then another minute beyond that and we were at our afternoon turn around point.

It was such a NICE day, and he was SO HAPPY, and peppy.

SO, we went for it.

I watched him carefully, slowing him down when I felt he was going too fast….and…we went around the block!!

I can’t tell you how excited I was. AND we made it around the block in about the same amount of time that Delilah does it.

Yesterday afternoon…we had another Blue Sky Day!  It started out the same way, with that pep in his step, he headed down the hill, instead of up. So when we reached our turn around point, I just kept going and took him a bit further than usual.

Of course, I tried to document it with a photo, but someone just wouldn’t cooperate.

I know what you're doing.

I know what you’re doing.

You want me to look into this camera.

You want me to look into this camera.

News flash, Mama!

News flash, Mama!

It's not gonna happen!

It’s not gonna happen!

Blame it on the Blue Sky Day!

You Make Me Laugh – October 23, 2016

October 23, 2016 By Jodi

You make me laugh (or smile,) the sweet, funny, loving things my dogs do on a daily basis, that brings a smile to my face, or a laugh to my lips.

Delilah, the way you jump up on the couch, demanding attention from The Daddy when he gets home from work, even though you KNOW you AREN’T supposed to be ON the couch…

Chocolate Labrador

You make me laugh.

Yeah, she jumped up on the couch like she owned it. Makes me wonder what she does when I’m not home. 🙂

Do your dogs do things they know they aren’t suppose to me, and do you laugh at them like I do?

Trick or Treat Giveaway Hop

October 20, 2016 By Jodi

The Trick or Treat Giveaway Hop is a sponsored event. All brands and bloggers have provided compensation to be included in this giveaway. All content and opinions expressed are 100% my own and may not reflect the values of all brands and blogs involved. Sponsors include Caru, Nature’s Logic, and The Honest Kitchen.”

trick-or-treat-hop Trick or Treat.

When I was a kid, the whole premise of Trick or Treat was, you knocked on someone’s door, and said “Trick or Treat.” The idea was the nice person who was at the door, would give you a treat. Those folks that didn’t give you a treat, (or the ones who gave out APPLES and PENNIES) were fair game to have  some kind of dirty trick played on them. Like toilet papering their house or something.

Well times change (as we all know) and the devious bloggers at Kol’s Notes, and Beagles & Bargains, decided to put their own evil little spin on Trick or Treating. That’s right, they came up with a Trick or Treat blog hop, the key difference being, participating bloggers will be showing you how to train your dogs with tricks and YOU get the chance to win a $300 gift card to PetSmart and some amazingly awesome treats, by our sponsors at Caru, Nature’s Logic, The Honest Kitchen.

But this isn’t like your traditional blog hop where you link up. Oh no. You don’t have to do anything like that in order to win prizes. All you have to do is visit the participating bloggers and enter using the widgets on their blogs. Sounds easy, right?

I’ll give you the participating bloggers in a minute, right now I’m going to show you how easy it is to teach your dog a trick that I’m calling, “BOO!”

I read somewhere that if you have a dog that is exhibiting a behavior you aren’t particularly fond of, teach the dog to do the trick on command, and the dog will do the behavior less. It sounds good in theory, we’ll see how that works.

So Delilah has a habit of coming up behind me (or Hubby) and shoving her head between your legs. If you follow us on Instagram, you’ll have seen pictures of this. Personally, I think it’s adorable, unless I’m in the middle of bending over, or have, say, a hot cup of tea in my hand. You can see how that might be problematic, no?

I thought, let’s try and teach this on command and see how it goes.

Here’s what I did.

I started out with Delilah in a sit behind me. (When you look at the video you’ll notice I have to  redirect her a bit. I told you there were some tasty treats involved.)

I told Delilah to “Stay” and then I took a few steps away from her. (Remember, you want to start off easy and close, you can increase your distance over time.)

Once I was in position, I opened my legs and called her to me, and gave her the treat.

If your dog is hesitant, you can actually bend down and look at them from between your legs, this should be exciting enough for them to come to you. Or you can show them the treat and then toss it a few inches in front of you.

Once your dog has the idea of what you are expecting of them, you can add your cue word.

And that’s how we trained “BOO!”

Check out the video to see how it looks. (I apologize for the darkness and lack of clarity, and then annoying music that doesn’t stop, but I promise, I’m working on getting better!)

Well, that was pretty simple, right?
You may not get off so easily with some of the other tricks, but the good thing is you can get some awesome treats. Check it out.

So, if you’re looking for some great tricks to add to your dog’s resume, check out Kol’s Notes, Beagles and Bargains and these other awesome bloggers.
