Day Thirty Two – Mama, where did I come from?

January 1, 2011 By Jodi

Did you ever ponder the above question?  No, not in the sense of conception, but did you ever look at your family and wonder if you’re related to them?  That happens to me, a lot, in fact last summer  I asked my aunt if I was adopted.  She laughed and said, no honey you are not adopted.  But I am about as different from most members of family as any one person can be; especially my mother.

Here’s an example: we live in a raised ranch; the basement is finished and my mom lives in the “in-law suite” as I like to call it.  Our garage is attached, because my mom lives in the basement a lot of our storage is in the garage or in a crawl space that is in our garage.  That is where we store our Christmas decorations; to get to the garage I have two choices, I can go down through my mother’s area or I can go outside and enter through the garage.  Usually I just go through my mom’s.

This morning I went downstairs and she was sitting at her computer playing a game. I wanted to let her know that I would be putting my Christmas tree away (I’m allergic to pine so I have an artificial tree) it’s a beautiful tree, stands about 7 feet tall and weighs at least 75 pounds.  The tree comes in three pieces, the branches in the base and middle sections automatically fall down when you set them upright.  I brought the tree up in three pieces because obviously I cannot carry 75 pounds all at once.  I decided it was best to put the tree back downstairs in three pieces.  So anyway I tell her, I will be putting my tree away this morning, and she says, “Maybe I will put my Christmas tree away.” Ok.

I went back upstairs to get the biggest section of the tree (I believe in getting the worse part over first), now when you walk down the stairs, once you open the door there is a post (it is a basement after all) and this is where my mother chose to display the Christmas cards she received.  Well anyway, here I truck struggling with the heaviest part of the tree and it’s very bulky to boot and guess where my mother is?  Yup, you guessed it, she is standing at the pole taking down her Christmas cards. I fell down the last step because I was carrying that big ass tree and didn’t see the last step.  What do you think happened? She asked if I was ok, then went back to taking her cards down.  I struggled through the room and into the basement and she never even offered to open a damn door for me.

I don’t know about you, but if the situation were reversed I certainly would have 1) been standing out-of-the-way and 2) at the very least opening some doors!!

Then there was the time she called me up at work to tell me that the dryer wouldn’t turn on.  She said, there’s a red light blinking that says check lint screen and I did, but the dryer won’t turn on.  Mind you, that red light blinks EVERY time you use the dryer.  I came home from work and turned the dryer on.

Maybe tomorrow I will tell you about the time we “lost” cable.  In the meantime I will be pondering that question, “Mama where did I come from?”

Day Thirty One – Happy New Year

December 31, 2010 By Jodi

First I will start by saying I hope you have a happy and blessed New Year!  In 2009 I was really looking forward to 2010 because I thought it wasn’t going to be as busy as 2009 (I had 4 major birthdays and 1 wedding) but it ended up being just a busy in a different way.  So here I am saying that I am looking forward to 2011 and hoping this is a less busy, less stressful year for me.  Enough about me.

Guess what?  I am going to take Lloyd’s advice and try to be a little fun and spontaneous, so seeing that it is the long holiday weekend and I was very busy today, I didn’t get to read a lot, but I very quickly read the article that the exiting governor of New Mexico (Mr. Richardson) decided to spend his last day as governor doing nothing, meaning he did not pardon Billy the Kid.

What do you think?  I think if he was promised a pardon then he should get the pardon and I really think that somewhere there are documents that indicate whether he was promised a pardon and they should abide by those documents.  When you think back to the time period people kept personal diaries and everything was hand written so I’m sure Mr. Wallace MUST have written it somewhere, whether in his personal diary or in a letter to someone.  Because if I know human nature and Mr. Wallace tricked Billy, then he bragged about it somewhere.

That’s all I got tonight, have a safe and happy New Year!  I’m watching “The Other Guys.”

Day Thirty – Shouldn't the sentence fit the crime?

December 30, 2010 By Jodi

I know I just wrote a blog last night about NOT being able to write a quick on the fly blog, but today I am livid with an article I read on CNN regarding two sisters in Mississippi who have been released after serving 16 years in prison.  Yes, you read that right, released….not paroled not pardoned but released, guess what their crime was?  They “lured” two men to an ambush area where the men were robbed by three teenagers who hit them with a shotgun and took $11.00.  Yes, $11.00.   The two sisters were convicted of armed robbery, while the three teenagers received lesser sentences and have already been released.  And guess what else?  The Governor of Mississippi is proud to have been able to “suspend their sentences indefinitely.”  REALLY?  PROUD?  I would be embarrassed and ashamed for not having PARDONED them sooner.  16 years in jail for $11.00, Michael Vick served less time than that and we all know what that Mo’Fo did!

But wait, it gets better…one of the conditions of the suspension is that one sister has to donate a kidney to the other sister who is on dialysis.  That’s what it really boils down to, is the money for the dialysis, if that woman did not have a kidney problem they would not be eligible for parole until 2014!  It sickens me to know that injustices like this continue to occur in this day and age.  Those women should probably have spent no more than six months in jail, then parole and then it’s over.  Instead 16 years later, they still sit in jail waiting for the paperwork to be processed.

“We need more days like this in Mississippi,” NAACP President Benjamin Jealous said at a news conference Thursday at the State Capitol building in Jackson. “We need more days like this in our country.”

Really, I think not.  I don’t think there should be any pride in this debacle, instead the state of Mississippi, their governor, their parole board and the NAACP should be ashamed and embarrassed that this didn’t happen 15 years ago.
