Full Of Pep….Day Three Hundred, Forty Seven

November 12, 2011 By Jodi

The raw diet has been a blessing for us in helping the dogs lose weight.  Besides the raw food, I have also changed the treats they get.  Mostly they are getting carrots, garlic tablets, (for flea and tick protocol) dehydrated chicken breast, and freeze-dried liver.  I have gone from giving them a processed snack at night and have switched to stuffed Kongs.  I am very conscientious about what they are eating.

I mentioned in a post a couple of weeks back that Sampson has lost 20 pounds in one year.  Actually all told he has lost about 29 pounds!  At his heaviest he weighed 115 pounds, he now weighs 86.5 pounds.  A huge difference.

Delilah has also lost  32 pounds, at her heaviest she weighed 105 pounds and she now weighs 73.5!

Our vet was so excited when she saw the dogs at Sampson’s annual check-up she was practically giddy, she said by helping him and Delilah lose the weight, we have probably given them 2 to 3 years extra life.  Music to our ears.

Besides looking fantastic, both dogs have a lot more energy.  Just this past summer Sampson could barely hang in for 40 minute walk.  This morning we did an hour, 55 minutes of which was on trail.  Up and down hills, over and under branches.  Sampson would run ahead, then run back to me.  At the 55 minute mark when we popped out of the woods, he still had the energy to engage in some running and wrestling with Delilah.

The increase in energy level is noticeable.  In fact I have noticed them wrestling more frequently and believe it or not they even seem to rest better.

My pups are full of pep!

Follow-Up Friday….Day Three Hundred, Forty Six

November 11, 2011 By Jodi

For those new to the blog, my follow-up Friday provides me with an opportunity to update or revise a post from the previous week.

Tasty Tuesday – Author’s Note:

I think I should probably clear something up about the green beans.  The dogs don’t normally  eat the green beans frozen.  I buy the big bag at my local warehouse club and then I put some of the green beans in a medium size container in the bottom drawer of my fridge.  The beans last about three days in the bottom drawer, most days the beans are thawed but on the days when I forget to fill the container, the dogs happily eat the frozen green beans.  It really is no different from putting green beans in their Kongs and freezing them (which I have done.)

Veteran’s/Armistice/Remembrance Day

I do want to take a moment today for reflection.  Today is Veteran’s Day, a day when we remember and honor those who selflessly serve (d) in the military.  Other countries call this Armistice Day or Remembrance Day.

My freedoms are important to me and I sleep peacefully in my bed at night, because there are fearless men and women separated from their loved ones, who stand vigilant and ready through the dark and sometimes noisy night to protect those freedoms.  While I can’t thank them all personally, I can send a shout out to those I know (and love.)

So today especially I want to thank my daughter Cassie, my nephew Andrew, my son-in-law Alex, Esther Stevenson, Daly Miranda, Reuben Luyanda, Antonio Alcover, Matthew Lorenzen and his wife Karen, Jeremy Lacey and Brandon Griffith. These soldiers currently serve in the US Military both home and abroad.

I’d also like to thank those who previously served, my nephew Kyle, Amanda Hannon, Lilliana Alcover, Kim Russell, Lloyd Sweeney, Tommy Smith and my own dear Hubby.

For a lovely post about a dog who served click here.

Obedience And Agility…Day Three Hundred, Forty Five

November 10, 2011 By Jodi

Tonight at the half-way mark of our drop-in obedience class, Sara took out some agility equipment.

The A-Frame, See-Saw and Dog Walk.

My favorite little lab mix Zoe was there and I have been itching to get Zoe on the agility equipment to see if we can help her and her mom Marcie, gain some confidence.

I offered to try Zoe on the Dog Walk, I used a treat and up she went, like she was an old pro! She was just as good on the A-Frame, in fact the only equipment she was hesitant on was the See-Saw, she went on it well enough, she just wasn’t expecting the quick drop once she reached the top.

You may remember Maggie from an earlier post where we worked on getting her through the tunnel, this time we used the treats to get her up and over the dog walk.  She did fantastic!

Sampson did the A-Frame and the Dog Walk, but he really doesn’t care for the See-Saw, Delilah of course LOVES the agility and will do just about anything for a speck of food as evidenced in the photo below.
