Welcome to this week’s edition of Follow-up Friday, the blog hop that wraps up your week and leads you right into the weekend.

Follow-Up Friday Blog Hop

Follow-Up Friday Blog Hop

This week I’m flying solo, so let’s get right to it.

Where have you been?

So it’s a mixed bag of nuts.  Some of your dogs wait up and some don’t.  Just like mine.  One waits, the other does not.  Maybe Delilah is just warming the bed for me?  Yeah, I’ll go with that. 🙂

Strange Doin’s

You guys are so kind, but it’s the hair, definitely the hair.  I almost never have a frown on my face. But when I do, well I probably resemble him more.

Genevieve said, “Were the kids dressed up like Pilgrims?”

No.  The young man we met had a nice shirt, pants and tie along with a hat, while some of the girls were dressed in gowns/fancy dresses and one young woman looked like something from a Dickens play!

And you’re welcome.  I know most of you left here singing, “I’m Mister Heat Miser, I’m Mister Sun.”  LOL and if you didn’t then well you will now. 😉

Thanksgiving Treats

Well first off the dog’s treats.  I used roughly two large apples, a quarter cup (or less) of oat flour and a good shake of cinnamon.

For our apple crisp I was looking to incorporate some pecans in the crumble part.  Here’s a picture of the finished crisp.  I will give the entire recipe and how I did it in a future post.

And if any of you tried this recipe, I’d love to hear what you thought.  Hubby who loves his dessert says this has to rate right up there in the top ten.  It’s very tasty.

Oz said, “I need to share this recipe with my Aunt who has Celiac and must be gluten-free! She gets upset around the holidays because of all the tasty desserts and treats that she cannot have.”

I hope she tried it Oz, I know how hard it can be, especially around the holidays!

Jan K asked, “Does it have to be almond flour or could I use another kind?”

I imagine the almond flour is probably the best IF you are making it Gluten Free.  Some of the GF flours have very strong tastes, so I suggest either the almond or oat flour.  IF you want to make it and aren’t worried about gluten you could probably just use regular flour.

Kristine said, “Wow, if I didn’t know better, I would wonder if Delilah had been conversing with Shiva.”

That wouldn’t be the first time this thought had crossed my mind Kristine.  I’ve often wondered if they weren’t somehow related. 🙂

Donna asked, “Did you mention to Arianne that Delilah is a LAB? LOL!”

Oh yes Donna, that came up. 🙂

While I think there is an entire post on this topic, I will say this.  Delilah running off really had nothing to do with the food.  How’s that for a tantalizing hint? LOL

November 28, 2013 By Jodi

Today we are participating in the special edition of the This ‘N That Thursday blog hop hosted by 2 Brown Dawgs and Ruckus the Eskie.  Thank you to our hosts.

Before I tell you what we are thankful for, I have a couple of quick things to discuss and then we’ll let you get back to time with family and friends.  After-all, isn’t that what this holiday is all about?

You may have noticed a new badge in our sidebar.  It is the Advent Calendar for Dog Lovers badge and this year I am as excited as all woof to tell you that we are co-hosting this AMAZING event.  Pulled together by the brilliant and extremely talented Jodi Chick of Kol’s Notes, and joined by other amazing bloggers such as Emma from My GBGV Life, Jen from My Brown Newfies and Gizmo from Terrier Torrent,  the Advent Calendar is going to be an amazing extravaganza!!

That’s right, I said Every.  Single. Day!

What’s more, the grand prize package (yes, there is a GRAND prize) is worth over $800!  All the details will be available December 1st on Jodi’s blog, but don’t worry, any day that we aren’t hosting the giveaway we will have links to the blogger who is.

Black Diamond Necklace

The other event I’m excited to tell you about is an auction taking place right now on Bringing up Bella.  Leslie won a beautiful black diamond, paw-print necklace and she’s auctioning it off with proceeds going to Save a Sato, an organization working tirelessly in Puerto Rico to save street dogs.  You are probably aware that Leslie’s darling Bella is from Save a Sato, so this cause is near and dear to her heart.

In order to up the ante, Leslie has agreed to match the bid (up to $500.)  A necklace this beautiful won’t last long, so hurry over and place your bid today!

What we are thankful for.

I’d just like to take a minute today to share what we, at Heart Like a Dog are thankful for.

First we are thankful we have each other.  Sampson and Delilah bring such joy and laughter into my life every day, they truly are blessings.

We are thankful for family and friends whom we hold dear and we count you, dear readers among them.

We are thankful for the material gifts we have, even though at times we struggle, we are grateful for food, shelter and basic living necessities which so many in today’s world are lacking.

We are thankful as always for our military.  For our men and women who at a moments notice will leave family and loved ones to protect us from those who would do us harm.

Today, on this day of thanks we salute you.

Class Clown

November 27, 2013 By Jodi

I recently mentioned that Delilah and I had once again started scent training.  This is something we do for fun, to challenge Delilah and keep her brain busy.

Our first class was called Beginning Nosework.  In this class we used only food for our ‘finds.’  It worked like this.  Our instructor Arianne, placed about 10 empty boxes on the floor.  One box was the food or ‘find’ box.  (It’s important to always use the same box for food as eventually the box will begin to smell like food.)  While we distract our dogs she hides the food and then we psyche our dogs up to go and find it.

It’s like Hide ‘N Seek for dogs. Sort of.

This time around we are taking Advanced Nosework.  This means our dogs already know the ‘game’ and now we are going to begin transitioning them from food to other scents.  The first scent we are working with is birch, we use birch because it has a very strong, distinct odor.   I have a half a q-tip with a drop of birch on it and I placed this inside a 4 oz jelly jar.  I had Hubby punch a bunch of holes in the lid.  Most people use small tins to hold the q-tip, but I like the jelly jar for right now as it’s too big for Delilah to eat.

I can’t imagine how much it would cost to remove a tin from her stomach.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA You can see the container in the upper left section of the bicycle wheel.

We are in our third week of a six week course and right now we are still pairing the food with the birch.  Arianne will take the birch container and place a couple bits of our food on it.  She hides them together and we encourage our dogs to find it. When they do, we reward them with more food.

Typically when we work we stand on the side of the room and when it’s our turn, I ask Delilah if she’s ready and then I tell her to find it.  I will then drop the leash and she will make a bee-line for boxes.

She knows how and loves to play this game.

Last night there were only two of us in class.  The other handler has great control over her dog.  He’s a beautiful Rhodesian Ridgeback named Oakley.  When he’s ready to work she removes his leash and he runs right over to start his search.

I figured it was a small class so I’d try un-clipping Delilah.

You see where this is going right?

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA Our find was somewhere in this mix of obstacles.  You will notice I say obstacles because as the dog becomes more comfortable with boxes, other items (as well as height) are added.

Delilah is sitting in front of me like an angel dog.  I say, are you ready?  Go find it!  And I un-clip her leash.

Like an runner dashing off the line when the starter’s pistol signals, Delilah is off.   Instead of running for the search course, she runs directly over to Arianne’s box of goodies.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA Hmmm, there’s a lot of high value treats in here.  A lot better than that stuff she’s feeding me from Trader Joe’s.

I call her.  And call her.  And call her some more.  She ignores me.  I go up to her and clip her leash on and lead her back to our place on the side and we try again.

Right back to the treats!

This really had Arianne interested.  She was determined to figure out why Delilah reacts this way off-leash.

Luckily for me, Arianne had a few tricks up her sleeve, which I will share in another post as this one is getting quite long.

I shall just assure you that by the last search of the night, I was indeed un-clipping Delilah’s leash and she was running directly to the search area.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Do you have a Delilah?  A Dog that dances to her own tune?  It’s one of the many things I love about this dog.
