I Thought I Saw – Barks and Bytes

June 11, 2015 By Jodi

We don’t live in the country, but there is a lot of wooded area in and around our neighborhood. There is a town park that consists of 183 acres that links up via trails to the park at the top of our street.

Most encounters are casual and by that I mean, from a distance. Yesterday we walked out the door and started down the drive way when Sampson noticed a deer across the street. Of course that set him barking, which got Delilah barking and so we waited until the deer had moved along and then continued on our way.

Living in the area I do it’s a given we will encounter wild animals. To date I’ve seen a coyote, lots of deer, a rafter of turkeys, a fox, raccoons, owls, chippies, snakes.

Surprise Mutherfucker!! He, he, he, you should see the look on your face. (Photo courtesy of Animal Pictures.)

Like I said, most of these encounters are casual. But when I see something that has the potential (in my opinion) to cause harm, well let’s just say the hair on my body stands on end and I shiver.

Then I beat feet.

The one thing I hadn’t seen that I’d been dreading was a skunk. I’ve sure smelt them in my area, but hadn’t seen them.

During the fall, winter and spring months our morning walks often take place in the dusk/dark, and my dogs love to shove their heads in bushes.

Chocolate and Golden Lab

Nah, nothing can hurt you in the bushes. Stick your nose in a little further.

After Storm from 2 Brown Dogs got skunked, I really started to think about this more. Then someone posted on Facebook that their dog got skunked, then another. I started to wonder….is my time coming?

Sampson is usually the one who chooses the path we walk and he usually gets fixated on one route, we do that route frequently until he gets fixated on a different route.

Oh shit, does this mean he’s obsessive compulsive? WTF Sampson!

So one day last week we’re traveling his little route and the dogs are doing their sniffing/peeing business and one of them shoves their nose into a bush. I see a bushy black animal with a white stripe push it’s way farther back into the bushes.

I Thought I saw a Skunk.

Go, Go, Go

The hair on my body stood on end. The exact words out of my mouth were, “Jesus Christ, Go, Go, Go”, and I started walking as fast as I could away from it. Thankfully my dogs understand the concept of Go, Go, Go, which by the way, most of you will have an emergency recall, but I also think it’s important to have a command for when you really need to hustle with your dogs, for whatever reason. Somehow ours has become Go, Go, Go and it works.

Afterwards I was unsure if I’d seen a skunk or a cat, I mean it happened so fast. Did it push it’s way through the bushes or did it jump? Do skunks jump?

I had to find out if skunks jumped, so I turned to Google.

I found a website with info about skunk that actually made me giggle. I know, right? Who giggles about a skunk?

From the Wildlife Hotline Website:

“Skunk versus anything – Skunk wins.  The thing to remember is that they KNOW it.  Many of us in the wildlife management community sincerely love the skunks.  Even when they a little babies, they have the ego of a skunk.  Skunks do not care if you see them at night.  These are not animals that you shine a light on and they scatter.  They just don’t care about you, or your dog, cat, or even your car for that matter.  To a skunk, nothing is a threat.  Do you know why you smell skunk when one gets hit by a car?  It’s not because they naturally release their scent upon death.  You smell them because the skunk saw the car coming, and they sprayed the car to make it stop.  It never occurred to the skunk that the car wouldn’t back down – everything else does.” Source

I’m not sure about you, but that last bit about the skunk spraying the car struck me funny.

It seems I wasn’t quite clear in that post regarding blog hops. I do hope to cover the topic in a post next week, but in the meantime please go back and read the update. 🙂

Engaging Your Reader

June 9, 2015 By Jodi

Before I went to BlogPaws I promised I’d share my tips for Engaging Your Reader with you, my readers. My session was a little different this year than the last time I spoke. This year my session was a ten minute table discussion with nine different people.

I wrote a quick outline of talking points I could hand out to attendees, but tailored the individual discussions based upon a questionnaire I e-mailed to them.

The reason I did this is reader engagement is different for everyone. Some folks want more readers, some want more comments and some people to return to their blog.

For me, it’s a combination of all of the above, but also about building a community. I really feel this blog has a great sense of community. I notice when I’m reading your comments that some of you comment on previous comments. It’s like a little neighborhood coffee klatch.

Once a while back when I was trying to get a feel for what my blog is about, Jen from My Brown Newfies said something like, “Your blog is like Cheers, where everybody knows your name.” That was a huge compliment for me and it really set me on the path to where I wanted to go with this blog.  (Thank you Jen! XOXO).

So enough babbling, here are my tips on Engaging Your Reader.

Chocolate Lab

I’d like to engage you in feeding me some treats. Thankyouverymuch.

Keep in mind this is an outline of talking points.

Keep content relevant to your mission statement.

  • A blog about training dogs should have posts about training dogs.
  • Product reviews should have relevancy to mission statement. (A blog about dog training should have products used for training dogs.)

Write with authenticity.

  • Use words you would typically use in conversation.  (Many people say reading my blog is just like sitting down and talking with me.)
  • When sharing facts, link back to your source.

Write about topics that instill passion in you.

  • Passion shines through in writing.  People will connect with your passion.
  • Editorial calendars are useful in scheduling posts and jotting down ideas for future posts.
  • Did you read a blog that touched your heart?  Bookmark it for future use.

Connect with other bloggers.

  • Link back to a post that inspired you.
  • A well thought out comment adding to the discussion will encourage others to check out your blog.
  • Connect with other bloggers on social media.
  • Ask for another blogger’s help if you are stuck on something.
  • Collaborate with other bloggers for special blog hops or events. ( example: Caring for Critters Round Robin.)

Don’t engage in too many blog hops.

  • Non-blogging readers may not understand (or care) what blog hops are.
  • Don’t become predictable, it’s easy for someone to blow off reading your post when you become predictable.

I want to try and express this a little better, as I’ve heard this may seem like I’m against blog hops, which I’m totally not!

Blog hops are great, I love blog hops, heck the best blog hop I know is Thursday’s Barks and Bytes hosted by 2 Brown Dawgs and yours truly. 🙂

Blog hops are a great way to connect bloggers (or readers) with other bloggers passionate about a particular topic.

For instance, Barks and Bytes is sort of like gathering around the water fountain at work on Monday and catching up with your co-workers. It’s a great way to connect with other bloggers and work on building your own community. Fit Dog Friday is amazing if you are looking for tried and true tips to help get and keep your dog in shape. Tasty Tuesday is the place to go when you are looking for treats to spoil your dogs.

I’m just saying, you want to be cautious about when you join a blog hop, why you join and how often. Don’t join in just to join in. Join a blog hop because its message speaks to you, you think it will interest your readers and because you have something to add to the conversation.

Do you have any tips for engaging your readers? What does engagement mean to you?

Discuss.

There Will Be Swag

June 8, 2015 By Jodi

One of the things I learned on my first trip to BlogPaws was there will be swag. Lots and lots of swag. Besides the bag of stuff you get at check in, there are sponsor booths and you get tons of stuff there as well.

When BlogPaws was in D.C. I flew down and Hubby drove down to pick me up, I didn’ have to worry about getting the swag home, we had a whole car I could fill up if I needed to.

I knew I didn’t have that luxury for my Nashville trip. I debated shipping my stuff home but at the last minute, I changed my mind and packed in an extra large suitcase, one with plenty of room. I figured I’m either paying for shipping, or paying to check a bag.

Once I got to Nashville, I unpacked my suitcase and set the empty suitcase on the luggage rack.

I went through the swag bag and pulled out the items I knew I wouldn’t use and set them in a bag. The stuff I knew I’d be bringing home, I packed in the bottom of the suitcase. When I was finished wearing a particular outfit, I’d pack it away in the suitcase.  Monday morning when it was time to leave, all I had to pack was my pajamas and toiletries.

The first thing I did when I got home (after hugging on my dogs) was to bring the suitcase in and settle in to do some laundry.

The dogs were very interested in my luggage.

Delilah in particular couldn’t wait for me to unpack, she had to stick her nose in the suitcase to sniff out goodies.

Chocolate Lab

Beef liver, pig’s ears and rollers, oh my!

In fact, she was so interested she actually climbed into my suitcase.

When is your next trip? If this is what you bring home, you better start traveling more.

She grabbed a small greenie I brought back for my sister’s dog, but luckily I was right on her and got it away.

Later when Hubby got home I was showing him the treats I’d brought home and I must have left the pig’s ears (Miss Flea sent home one for each of them) on the pool table. I was doing dishes and I heard a noise, that almost sounded like soda can pop. When I went into the living room I saw the bag that held the pig’s ears chewed and torn on the floor and Delilah finishing up her snack.

Somehow I missed the second pig’s ear, but thankfully Delilah made a dash for it, so I was able to save it for Sampson for a later time. Maybe when Delilah has to go for her annual vet exam.

As for the swag I didn’t want…well Flea was donating what as left of the Jones booth to a friend of hers who has a rescue in South Carolina, so I donated my stuff too.

Do your dogs help you unpack after a trip? Are they bold enough to climb into your suitcase?
