Engaging Your Reader (Redux) – Barks and Bytes

June 18, 2015 By Jodi

Sorry to be so MIA this week, I’d been helping my sister in caring for our great-aunt who was ill and she passed last Friday. Despite us expecting it, it came much quicker than we anticipated. That combined with a couple of other things has had me down in the dumps and struggling to string a post together. I’m not sure at this point what my blogging schedule will be, but hopefully will be able to sort things out pretty quickly. I do have a couple of ideas/posts/and a new product review in the pipeline, so I basically just need to get my shit together.

I'm not trying to criticize you, but you do get a bit hysterical at times.

Please, somebody pull her head out of her ass and give her a good smack. I’d do it myself but as she loves to point out, I’m missing the opposable thumbs.

Last week I promised I’d get more into the Engaging your Reader topic. Since the topic is lengthy and the comments are amazing, I’m breaking this out into two posts. Next week I will tackle the rest of the topic.

I’ve included the outline I published last week, as well as relevant comments. I hope that most of these are self-explanatory, but I’m including my thoughts in parenthesis. On the chance that they aren’t clear, please, please leave me a comment or shoot me an e-mail. 🙂

Keep Content Relevant to Your Mission Statement

  • A blog about training dogs should have posts about training dogs. (For instance you wouldn’t include a post about your local outlet mall and the Coach purse deal you got.) 🙂
  • Product reviews should have relevancy to your mission statement. (Your mission statement says, The Good, the Bad and the Oh My God of Living with Dogs and you do a product review for tampons-that my friends is funny, but it’s a no-no.)

Paved by Paw Prints said, “What you said, about keeping content to your mission statement, is really good. I have a variety of dog-related posts planned but I think I might need to consider what the main focus of my blog really is.”

I think that was the hardest thing for me. Because my blog is mostly stories about my dogs, how do I define it? I still don’t know that my tagline is just right or that people who land here for the first time really know what this blog is about. I feel like, “The Good, the Bad and the Oh My God of Living with Dogs” is really a blanket statement. It might be time to narrow my focus down.

Write with authenticity

  • Use words you would typically use in conversation.(For instance, I swear (A LOT) in real life. I finally stopped fighting it and use it in my posts. Does it offend some people? Perhaps, but I’m being true to me and who I am and I hope that comes across.)
  • When sharing facts, link back to the source. (When you are writing about an illness/training product/supplement you want to make sure to give people the opportunity to research the topic themselves. It also shows where your source came from.)

Write about topics that instill passion in you.

  • Passion shines through in your writing and people will connect with your passion. (When you are writing about something you are passionate about you choose words that express emotions. This is what helps you connect with people.)
  • Editorial calendars are useful in scheduling posts and jotting down ideas for future posts. (I use an editorial plug in (WordPress Editorial Calendar) which was great when I was scheduling posts for Nashville. The drawback to the plug in is, you need to keep your eye on it, because you actually put the post in the calendar. If you are using the calendar just to store ideas, you could inadvertently schedule a blank or incomplete post. I also have a paper copy of my editorial calendar and use that for posts that might be further into the future. It also allows me to make notes, or jot down ideas and if I don’t use them I can transfer the idea to a different month.)
  • Bookmark blog posts that touch your heart so you can use them in the future. (These I’ll put in a draft form in the backend of the blog. I use these sometimes when I am looking for inspiration or a topic to post about or need it as a point of reference.)

Taryn said, “One of the reasons I blog is to have some place to log my agility progress.”

Excellent Taryn! Because you love agility so much that shines through when you talk about it. Not only are you sharing your passion with others, you are documenting your progress to look back on at some point.

Taryn also said, “One of the key things that brings me back to a blog over and over again is humor. If someone can make me laugh/smile consistently, they get my vote! I try to reciprocate as much as possible.

I like to use humor in my posts. I do this for two reasons. One being if I didn’t laugh about some of the shit my dogs do, I’d be in tears all the time. Two I think people in general relate to humor. One problem I have is sometimes I write something I think is funny and people get all Sirius in the comments. But then again, my humor is sometimes unique.

Emma said, “We try to keep a basic schedule so readers know what to expect and when to expect it, but we like to use variety in our schedule.”

I think schedules are good, especially when you are producing a daily post and you are very wise to use variety with that.

And just because it’s a nice comment. 🙂

Lauren Miller said, ” I also love your blog because when I read it, it DOES feel like we’re sitting down with a cup of coffee and just talking.”

Thank you Lauren. I really want people to feel comfortable on this blog and know it is a place to feel loved and supported. 🙂

You Make Me Smile – June 14, 2015

June 14, 2015 By Jodi

You make me smile (or laugh), the sweet, funny, loving things my dogs do on a daily basis that brings a smile to my face, or a laugh to my lips.

Delilah the way your nose knows

Chocolate Lab

.

where all the chippies hiding spots are…

Chocolate Lab

.

and the fact you inspect them thoroughly….

You make me smile.

Do your dogs know where all the wild critters hide in your yard? Do they track them like Delilah does?

Follow-Up Friday – June 12, 2015

June 12, 2015 By Jodi

Welcome to this week’s edition of Follow-Up Friday, the post where I highlight awesome comments, answer reader’s questions and generally just wrap up my week, and this week, I also try and pull my foot out of my mouth.

You Make Me Smile – June 7, 2015

Golden lab

Just a few more rays….

Many of you commented on the Vitamin D factor, which truthfully, I never considered. Maybe he knows something I don’t. 🙂

Ann Cluck said, “Lady Girl loves to sit in the sun and she pants as well. I make sure she has water outside and she has shade if she chooses to use it. I also have a doggy pool for her!!”

Snap! I forgot about the pool! I have to see about getting that set up this weekend.

JanK said, “Cricket will usually move to the shade or come indoors before we have to make her move. We always have a bowl of water on the deck and in the yard too.”

He probably would have too, it was just making me nervous to watch him panting like that.

Paved by Paws said, “With Cody’s thick coat, it’s sometimes a challenge to keep him cool in the summer. I offer plenty of shady spots (which he enjoys) and over his dinner, I pour some water so he’s getting that extra hydration from his meals.”

That’s a very good point. Delilah is a good water drinker, but Sampson sometimes worries me. I often add a little water to his food as well, just to be on the safe side.

There Will Be Swag

Chocolate Lab

I smell dogs, dirty clothes and Jones Natural Chews.

Cupcake said, “NOTHING gets in here without a thorough check. It becomes an issue when my head gets caught in the handles of the grocery bags and I have to stand there till Mom helps to get me out.”

Oh Cupcake. You really do make me laugh. I might have to feature you in Sunday’s post. Has mom ever put a picture of that on the blog?

2 Brown Dawgs said, “I think at least two of them would not climb in a suitcase or anywhere else looking for treats. The third one, I am not so sure….”

Originally I would have pegged Storm to be the one climbing into the suitcase, but based on your Merrick review, I am really leaning towards Freighter. 🙂

Jen Gabbard said, “Oh Delilah; I feel like that’s probably said constantly in your home lol. 🙂

You are so right, that is said many, many times, but it is usually accompanied by lots of swear words. LOL

Jan said, “To get at pig’s ears and beef liver my dogs would have broken into the suitcase. Your girl was actually quite restrained.”

LOL she actually makes quick work when food is involved.

Monika said, “Sam has always equated suitcases to being shuttled off and spending the next X number of days with my grandchildren who I affectionately refer to as the Pterodactyls (screechers that they are). They love him to pieces and he definitely likes them, but as kids go, they kind of terrify him. Shoot what am I saying, they terrify me too! ”

Oh dear lord forgive me for laughing at this.

JanK said, “Oh, you were so organized! I had everything packed haphazardly, and I sure was glad that we drove so I didn’t have to worry about getting my swag home. The dogs have had their noses in all the bags ever since I got home, and I’ve just been picking out stuff to give them here and there.”

I probably wouldn’t have been so organized if I was driving and had the extra car room. I knew space would be limited and wanted to make the best of it.

Engaging Your Reader

Open mouth insert foot should have been the title to this one. The information I presented on that post was an outline, a list of talking points as it were to help keep me on task as I did the individual sessions.  Each of the folks who attended my session got a sheet with that exact information on it. When I decided to do the post on engagement I didn’t want those folks to think I was giving out more information to you than I gave to them, so I simply put my notes up.

I’m afraid some of you might have come away with the idea that I was trying to discourage folks from joining blog hops and that couldn’t be farther from the truth.

I do after all co-host a blog hop myself. 🙂

I did post an update on that post, trying to clarify my position. Please, please go back and read it. You can find the full update HERE.

All that being said, there were so many wonderful comments on that particular post that I will be highlighting them in another post next week. It may turn out that gets broken out in smaller posts as well, but we shall see when I delve into it. Hopefully I’ll handle that much better than I handled this one. 🙂

ALSO on that post, Paved by Paws  was inquiring of ZoePhee, “Hi Lauren – I love your blog, too! However, I’ve discovered I can’t comment on your posts because I don’t have one of the required accounts. Is there any way to get around this?”

Paved by Paws I’d like to answer this for you. If you go to the comment drop box on Lauren’s blog you will see these options.

.

.

Choose Name/URL and a box appears where you fill in your first name and the URL of your website. (You can see mine has already been filled in.) You should then be able to comment.

I Thought I Saw

Chocolate and Golden Lab

Nah, nothing can hurt you in the bushes. Stick your nose in a little further.

Taryn said, “Where I live in Northern Virginia, I’ve seen pretty much the same list of animals. That’s why leashes are so essential! When I need to speed my guys up, I say “Jig, Jig, Jig”.”

I’m glad I’m not the only one with a speed up command! I’m not even actually sure how I came up with it, but it works.

Sue said “Beware those black and white creatures! Rudy got skunked a couple days ago.”

OH NO Sue! That really stinks. (Hangs head in shame for the terrible pun.)

Mary said, “Torrey is the same way. Sticking her head in bushes, running ahead. Hopefully we can avoid a skunk. They seem rather ballsy from what I just read.”

I say “Get your skunk on” is the new Honey Badger. 😉

Monika said, “For some reason, Go-Go-Go at my house means pause, turn around, look at Mom, blink as if it were spoken in Yugoslavian, then ever so s.l.o.w.l.y. and I do mean slowly, amble forward. It’s usually in my galley kitchen or at the back door hallway when I’m trying desperately to bring in a heavy load of groceries and maneuver around Sam. One of these days dog, one of these days.”

Once again you make me laugh. That is what happens when I say, “Get out of my way,” at my house.

Jan said, “Some friends found an orphaned skunk and had it de-smelled a few years ago. Big mistake. It was nocturnal and kept them awake all night. It was mean and fearless when it was awake. Now I understand why.”

I would never…No, no thank you. What possessed them?

Jackie Bouchard said, “That is funny about the skunks spraying a car. If you want to read some funny shit about skunks, you have to read “Winterdance” – Gary Paulsen’s book about training for the Iditarod when he didn’t know WtH he was doing. (We have never been skunked. I’m knocking on wood!)…Thanks for clearing up the blog hop thing. (I have a pet peeve about bloggers who join a hop with a post that is COMPLETELY off topic. When Peggy and I used to do the Give Cancer the Paw hop, we had a couple of posts join that had zero to do with cancer. I think especially since it was a blog for info/support about such a sensitive topic, that really pissed me off!)”

Thanks Jackie, I’m sorry for the confusion. I understand your frustration, sometimes we have people join the hop that aren’t bloggers or don’t link back to us. Maybe we need a blog hopping 101 course? 😉

That’s it for me, thanks for hanging in and bearing with me.
