Did You Hear That?

December 2, 2018 By Jodi

Delilah is a dog that likes to walk when she’s doing her business. That’s how she got the nickname Delilah Shitwalker. I don’t know how she does this, I mean, I’ve done walking squats and there’s nothing pleasant about it.

This only becomes problematic at certain times of year. Times like when it’s dark when we walk or when there are a lot of leaves on the ground.

Times like now.

Usually I’m pretty good at keeping track of where she’s walking, but the past two weeks, I’ve lost track of two turds.

I know.

The good news is, the town hasn’t picked up leaves yet, and they will use a big vacuum. Odds are, the vacuum will just suck it up and no-one will be the wiser.

Last night we walked while it was still light out, and I was able to keep track of where she was going. Of course it helped that she ended up in the street and dropped her last one there.

Honestly, how many dogs do you know that shit in the street?

Anyhow, I was watching her like a cat watches a mouse, when suddenly a dog barked on the next street over.

Did you hear that?

I laughed when she stayed in her squat position, but stopped what she was doing to look in the direction of the dog bark.

You make me laugh (or smile.) The sweet, loving, funny things dogs do that make us laugh or smile.

What did your pet do that made you laugh or smile this week?

Two Reasons Why My Dog Reminds Me of a House Elf

November 25, 2018 By Jodi

I’m a big Harry Potter fan (the books, NOT the movies!)

In the Harry Potter books we learned about House Elves. House Elves, in case you live under a rock, are indentured servants who ‘serve’ the house of their owners/masters, and the majority of them do it flawlessly. Most owners don’t need to punish the House Elf if something isn’t done to specifications, because a House Elf will generally punish themselves.

HOWEVER, IF the owner needs to punish an Elf, the very worst thing they can possibly do is to give them clothes. Clothes basically releases the Elf from service, and makes them a “Free Elf.” To most House Elves, being dismissed from service is disgraceful, and they will not be able to find work again.

Delilah reminds me of a House Elf in two ways.

One, she is constantly ‘cleaning’ up after me. She’s always in the kitchen checking the floor for scraps. In fact, last night I was putting the eggs into the egg container, and the carton slipped and fell on the floor. Delilah quickly swooped in and picked up an egg, egg shell and all, in order to help me clean up.

Because she had the egg shell, I took it away from her, and cleaned up all the shells, before I let her finish her job.

The other way Delilah resembles a House Elf is her loathing of clothes.

Normally, I don’t put clothes on my dogs. I do use boots in the winter when the snow and salt are on the roads, and when it’s super cold, I have a jacket for Sampson.

I also use the same coat for Delilah. Yes, it’s a slightly  big, but I put the coat on her first, then I put Sampson’s harness on her, and it works.

This past Thursday, we had one of the coldest Thanksgivings on record, it was so cold, I broke out the coat.

Delilah’s reaction was priceless. I held up the coat and she ran away from me. We did this for a couple of minutes and at one point, she ran to the Dog-Daddy, and shoved her head between his legs.

It’s like she’s a House Elf and I’m presenting her with clothes.

We Siriusly laughed over this one.

Food Motivated Dogs – A Blessing or a Curse?

October 28, 2018 By Jodi

First, I want to apologize to you all for not getting around to visit your blogs lately. It’s been a busy couple of weeks, with a lot going on. (More on part of this on Wednesday’s post.) Hopefully things are settling down, and I’ll be back to catching up this week.

One of the things that kept me busy this past week, was a work event. Wednesday I had the opportunity to get some overtime at work. One of my engineers asked me to attend a public meeting in a town about an hour and a half from my house. Because I had to be at the meeting for 6:30 PM, I didn’t have the chance to go home first to walk the dogs.

I had to get a dog walker.

You guys know me, I trust very few people with my dogs.  I could go to one of those dog walking websites, or I have a friend whose sister walks dogs. I also happen to know my friend’s sister, so Aileen came over last Sunday to reacquaint herself with the dogs.

I gave her as much information as I could. Showed her where leashes and harnesses are kept. Where to find poop bags. Which dog goes out which door (Sampson out the back, and Delilah out the front). I showed her where the treats were and told her it was up to her if she chose to use treats or not. While she was here, we walked around the neighborhood, and I pointed out all the DADO houses.

Honestly, I was as comfortable as I CAN BE leaving my dogs in the care of someone else.

Wednesday as I was driving to my meeting, I was tempted to text Aileen to see if she had gotten there yet. To see how the walk went, how the dogs were. BUT, I WAS driving, so I restrained myself.

Thankfully, just as I arrived in town, I received a text from Aileen. The context of which made me laugh out loud.

Aileen: All went well, I just got back with Delilah. They both peed several times and pooped once. I’ll lock up, leaving now.

Me: Thank you SO much.

Aileen: I gave them water and treats too…Delilah walked me to the closet to remind me.

Hubby laughed just as hard as I had when I shared the story. Honestly, there are blessings and curses to having food motivated dogs, but if there’s anything you can count on, there will be laughs.

You make me laugh or smile, the sweet, funny, loving things dogs do that make us laugh or smile.

What did your pet do to make you smile this week.
