Whoo Hoo Wednesday

November 14, 2012 By Jodi

When I first initiated WTF Wednesday it was based on a story I read about a man stomping on a hawk.  Thankfully the hawk wasn’t terribly injured, the man in question was apprehended by police and I wrote a scathing, humorous (at least I thought so) post.

The next couple of weeks I found other stories or people forwarded them to me and before I knew it, I was writing a weekly series.  People left me comments, on the blog and on facebook telling me how much they loved WTF Wednesday.

More and more the stories started to become depressing and hard to write, which is when I added in the Whoo/Hoo portion of the post, it gave me a respite from the horrific things I was reading.

With the time constraints I have on me this month, and the little time I get on facebook (thank you for all of you who called me out,) I decided to put WTF Wednesday on hiatus.

In last week’s WTF comments, Sue wrote, “I am beginning to edit what I see/read because I just can’t take any more cruelty stories. I don’t know if the world has become a more cruel place (I think it has) or if more is reported these days, but there’s too much violently bad news for me.”

That really hit home for me, because the stories have become more vile and disturbing, and it’s hard to even read some of these stories, never mind write about them.  More and more I’ve struggled trying to write the WTF Wednesday post.

Then Monday, Pamela wrote, “The Puppiness Project – Time To Say Goodbye”  Pamela has learned a lot from her dog Honey and she’s written more posts than she initially expected and she has shared them on her blog.

The line that really touched me was this one, “But lately, I’ve felt less enthusiastic about writing my Puppiness Project posts……I’m uninspired.”

That my friends, just about sums up WTF Wednesday for me in a nutshell.  I don’t look forward to them anymore.

Am I saying I will never write a WTF Wednesday post again?  No, never is a long time. Besides I have this spiffy badge that my friend Julie made for me.

What I am saying is when I see the story about a dog that shot a hunter in the ass, I will call him out and tell him how stupid he is for turning his back on dog with a gun in his paws. 😉

Because when you’ve lived as long as I have, you know the next WTF is just around the corner.

You may notice the title of this post is Whoo Hoo.

I do like to share heartwarming and inspiring stories with you, so I picked out a couple that really spoke to me this past week.

I hope you enjoy them as much as I did.

Rescued Michael Vick Dogs Reunited Five Years Later, CA

A bunch of the dogs rescued from the Bad Newz Kennel met again last month.  What inspires me the most is despite the horrific beginning these dogs had, they have gone on to live happy lives filled with love.  That my friends is the true heart of a dog.

People give donations for dogs seized in Bethlehem, Bethlehem, CT

If I were writing WTF post this would have probably made the cut.

The bad news is there were about 60 dogs removed from a man presenting himself as a rescue, the good news is that people are sending in donations and the dogs will get the help they need.

And how can you beat this title?

“Seeing my dog the day I got back from Afghanistan,”

Grab a tissue, it rained on my face when I watched it.

Has your blog ever evolved in an unexpected way?  Did you ever start something and then found you really had to work at it?  How did you manage, did you just work through it or go in a different direction?

WTF/Whoo Hoo Wednesday (11-7-12)

November 7, 2012 By Jodi

Welcome to WTF/Whoo Hoo Wednesday.

Some blog post or news article cross your path that left you shaking your head thinking WTF?  Or did you hear about something that raised your spirits and you screamed, Whoo Hoo?

That’s WTF/Whoo Hoo Wednesday.

My friend Julie from the Daily Dog Blog made me a nice spiffy badge.  Please feel free to use the badge whenever you’d like.

WTF?

Donations pour in for upstate NY dog set afire, Buffalo, NY

The best part of this story is the community is rallying around this puppy and donations are being made to help with his care.

The police are making strides with their investigation.

Oh and this just in, there’s a special place in hell for people who light puppies on fire.

What kind of monster sets a puppy on fire?  I’m the first one to tell you that I hate the fact that so many animals are surrendered to shelters, but really if you don’t want a dog, at least have the humanity to bring it to a shelter.

Speaking of bringing animals to a shelter.  I was on the phone today making my hotel reservations for Blogpaws 2013,  the person assisting me on the phone was telling me her daughter is one of those folks that constantly find abandoned animals.  The last time her daughter brought a lost animal to the Humane Society, she was given the third degree.

I get it, shelters are over-whelmed, but if you make it difficult for people to surrender animals then they tend to do stupid things, like abandon animals in a remote location, tie them to sign posts on the side of the highway or light them on fire.

Think about it for a minute.

Whoo Hoo

Dog’s dying wish, COEUR D’ALENE, ID

I saw this video on the No Dog About It Blog, while not my typical Whoo Hoo post, it still made me feel good.

A woman desires to give her older dog a last experience doing something he loves.

It shows that some people do have hearts like a dog.

And finally, I think this may be my last WTF/Whoo Hoo Wednesday post for the month of November.  If you’re my friend on facebook you know I’ve asked people to shame me when they catch me on it, because I’m supposed to be writing the rough draft of a book, which means no time for facebook!  Facebook is where most of my WTF’s and Whoo Hoos come from.

I will still post every Wednesday, but unless I inadvertently stumble upon a story, it won’t be a WTF/Whoo Hoo post.

And if you catch me on facebook (as a few of you have) please reprimand me (thank you for those who did) this book ain’t gonna write itself. 🙂

And because I can, I’m showing a photo of Sampson that I really love.

My handsome boy.

And don’t forget to send in your pictures for the calendar contest!  So far I have three entries. Woot! Woot!

My word count is at 8,846.

WTF/Whoo Hoo Wednesday

October 31, 2012 By Jodi

Welcome to WTF/Whoo Hoo Wednesday.

Some blog post or news article cross your path that left you shaking your head thinking WTF?  Or did you hear about something that raised your spirits and you screamed, Whoo Hoo?

That’s WTF/Whoo Hoo Wednesday.

My friend Julie from the Daily Dog Blog made me a nice spiffy badge.  Please feel free to use the badge whenever you’d like.  I am going to figure out how to add badges to my side bar, I promise!!

Meanwhile, since I’ve really limited myself to time spent with my arch-enemy facebook, I’ve not had a lot of WTF’s cross my path, so I’m shooting from the hip on this one.

In the past I’ve appealed to animal rescue organizations about their criteria for placing dogs.  Specifically I’ve heard of people (myself included) being turned down for puppies because someone was not home all day.

That’s water under the bridge now.  I have Delilah and I guarantee she is puppy enough to satisfy anyone’s puppy itch. 🙂

The pig came that way, I swear. I did NOT chew off its ears.

The reason I raise this issue again is we ran into our friend Brady and his mom on our walk Saturday morning.  Brady’s mom was struggling with two small dogs on leash.  One looked like a white Scottish Terrier while the other was a Jack Russell.

The JR definitely had issues with other dogs, because as soon as he saw my dogs he started wigging out.  Brady’s mom was practically dragging the dogs through the woods, the JR snarling and barking.

Of course this did not sit well with Delilah and it was a real hairy minute there before we untangled the two dogs.

Brady’s mom wanted us to walk with them and help the dogs adjust but I said, No way, this is not going to help.  I used my treats to guide Sampson and Delilah in another direction.

As we were wrapping up our walk we ran into Brady and his mom again.  She had brought the smaller dogs home and had come back because she thought she had one of my leashes.  (She didn’t.)

We had a minute to chat and I asked about the dogs.  She told me they were her mom’s dogs, she’d recently put her mom in an assisted living facility, and while they had paid for her mom to have the dogs in the facility her mom really couldn’t care for them, so she and her partner took them.

The kicker is this.  The JR was adopted 7 months ago from a humane society in Florida.  They were told the dog was about three years old.

The humane society adopted out a three year-old dog to a 79 year-old woman.

WTF?  Did they really think a 79 year-old woman would 1) be able to provide the basic needs for a three year-old dog (such as exercise and training) and 2) outlive the dog?

So here, seven months later the poor woman needs to go into assisted living and who takes care of the dogs?  Someone who really doesn’t want them.

It’s not fair to anyone, least of all the dog.

When I spoke to her on Saturday her plan was to send the dog away to a trainer at Cabela’s.

I did offer to help her but sadly, our training methods differ.

Angry child hangs dog because he was ‘mad.’ Salinas, CA

Just when you think you’ve seen and read everything you see something like this.

WTF?  Really, WTF?

A 12 year-old boy hung his dog because he was mad at it.  The boy who showed no remorse, was booked as a juvenile on animal cruelty charges.

My God, can you imagine what this kid will be doing in ten years?

Makes you wonder WTF is going on in this kid’s house.

Sacramento, CA

This came across my facebook page last night.  Apparently there’s a growing trend in Sacramento to cut off puppy’s ears and then treat the puppy with Aleve for pain.

There’s a sweet little pittie who’s shutting down at the Front Street Shelter.  If you are in the Sacramento area or know someone who is, this guy could use some help.

All I have to say is, what the fuck is wrong with people?  I don’t see the appeal in a dog with cropped ears, but I can tell you I’m thinking it might be a fitting punishment for people who do this.

Can you imagine?  All you’d have to do is take one look at them and go, yup that piece of filth abuses animals.  Then you can treat them accordingly.

I can’t really think coherently about this topic, I just feel like letting loose with a string of derogatory comments, but that won’t accomplish anything.

Pitbulls against misinformation has set-up a ChipIn to offer an award for reporting puppy ear butchers.  If you have even a dollar, it adds up.  You can contribute here.

Former Marine Raises $4K for Dog Reunion, Afghanistan/Alexandria,VA

I love our military and this story makes me love them more. A marine takes care of and falls in love with a dog in Afghanistan, when his tour is up, he comes home, but still wants the dog.  He finds an organization that will help but he needs $4,000 to bring the dog over.  He puts this up on facebook and before long he has raised the money he needs.

The dog is currently in quarantine and they should be reunited within the next ten days or so.

Warms the cockles of your heart, eh.

That’s it for us, how’s things in your neck of the woods?  Everyone make it through Sandy?  Any WTF’s or Whoo Hoos to share?
