Cooperation

December 10, 2011 By Jodi

I have a blog post swirling around in my head, trouble is in order to write it, I need Sampson’s assistance and he’s just not cooperating.

This thing that Sampson does usually happens when we first come home, so every time I walk in the door I have my cell phone in hand and ready to record.  To date, I haven’t been able to catch it.

But a funny thing did happen today when I came back from grocery shopping.

Hubby was up on the roof trying to fix an annoying leak.  So I brought the groceries from the car to the front step, with the intention of bringing them in one at a time and putting the groceries away.

Six bags of groceries set on the front stoop along with my pocketbook and a bag full of canned cat food.  In my left hand I had a case of Clementines and my right hand held my cell phone.  Using my right hand I opened the storm door just as the wind kicked up, wrenching the door from my hand and causing me to lose my balance.

I struggled briefly, trying to regain my footing but to no avail.  My right leg went left, my left leg went right and down I sat on top of the groceries as an “Oh No” groan escaped from my lips.

All I could think of was ‘please don’t let me sit on the eggs.’

Thankfully I didn’t.

And that little stinker still didn’t do what I need him to do!!

Christmas Miracle

December 9, 2011 By Jodi

The doorbell rang.

Bosco and Banjo the family’s two dogs tore from the living room. Bosco hit the scatter rug, landed on his rump and slid into position in front of the door, where Banjo joined him a few seconds later, both dogs barking furiously.

Janet shouted over the noise of the television, children and barking dogs “Eric, can you get the door?”

The doorbell rang again. Janet took a deep, calming, cleansing breath, raised her voice an octave and shouted again “Eric! My hands are covered in flour, can you please get the door!”

This time her words rang out as a command rather than a request.

The doorbell rang one more time. Janet rolled her eyes and reached for a towel. The last thing she wanted to deal with today was another donation seeker.

Already stretched to her budget’s limits, she prayed the cause would be frivolous, ensuring no guilt when she said, “I’m sorry it’s not in our budget this month.”

With Eric’s unemployment running out and no jobs to be found Christmas was going to be difficult enough this year.

The doorbell rang again, and Janet snatched the door open, the words “Good grief” dying on her lips at the sight which greeted her.

“Merry Christmas ma’am” the man from the local fire department, dressed liked Santa thrust a basket filled with wrapped gifts into her hands.

Another basket filled with food, was set at her feet, “Christmas blessings to you and yours” said a woman dressed like Mrs. Clause.

Janet stared stunned, at the crowd of Carolers gathered at her front door.  She lifted her eyes to heaven, found and focused on the Christmas Star.

Two tears rolled down her cheeks,  and as the Carolers burst into “Joy To The World,” snow began to fall.

(After reading a post at Gone For A Walk, I checked out Write On The Edge [I really do learn so much from all of you!] and decided to try my hand at one of their writing prompts.  I can’t wait to hear what you think.)

A Change Of Venue

December 8, 2011 By Jodi

Tonight we decided to deviate from our Thursday night obedience class and do something different.

We loaded the dogs in the car and went to the track at our local high school.  This is something we did quite frequently last year.  When we are the only ones there, it is a great opportunity to let the dogs run.  Sometimes we let them both off leash, but tonight I kept Delilah on the thirty footer.

There was one other couple there with a small white dog who played ‘run the fence’ with Sampson.  I kept Delilah away from the fence because sometimes, I know you’ll be surprised by this, but sometimes Delilah can be a little snarky at fences.

The moon was almost full, but still very high in the sky so the ground was dark.  We started our first lap around the quarter-mile track, Sampson and Delilah leading the way.

Intent on keeping up with Delilah, I followed her onto the grass, completely forgetting the torrential rains we had last night.

Splash.  “Ugh!”

Splash. “Ugh!”

Splash. “Ugh!”

Dammit, I stepped in a puddle!  Right from the get-go.

Thankfully it was just my toes that got wet, which wasn’t so bad.

Hubby made sure to close all the gates as we passed them, just in case the dogs wandered away from us, but they stayed pretty close and came back each time we called them.

I tried to take a couple of pictures but either because of darkness or movement, I only got one picture of Delilah checking out the bleachers.

We managed five laps around the track.

While I don’t see any marathons in our future, we did manage to tire out the puppies.
