BlogPaws Gives Back

May 25, 2017 By Jodi

One of the sessions I was looking forward to attending at BlogPaws conference was, “Overworked & Overwhelmed? The Four-Step Process for Reinventing Your Writing” by Robbi Hess. After a rough start with a flight delay, I was concerned I’d miss the session, but luckily for me, we made it with time to spare.

I got a lot out of Robbi’s session, so when I saw her Friday, just before lunch, I stopped her to let her know how much I appreciated what she had shared. She kindly asked me to sit with her at lunch, so we plopped our stuff down and headed to the buffet table. When we returned to the table, two lovely ladies had joined us. As we ate, we talked. (Duh…like you’d expect anything less!) And at one point, one of the women said something that alerted me to the fact that she would be speaking later. Naturally, I asked her what session she was hosting and the response was, she was the Keynote Speaker! I think my exact words were, “Oh Shit, I’m having lunch with the Keynote Speaker!”

During her speech, Kathleen asked if any of us were up for a challenge, I raised my hand. Well, let’s face it, I’m at this conference to learn how to be a more effective blogger.

The challenge was this: post at least one community related post from BlogPaws, once a week for twelve weeks, and make sure to tag BlogPaws in the post. I was already thinking of posts that I would be sharing, so this seemed an easy task.

My plan is to have my usual Sunday post, a post on Tuesday that is my personal post, and a post on Thursday that is somehow related to BlogPaws and the community. Of course, there could always be more, because I have a LOT to tell you.

So here we are post one.

If you’ve never attended a BlogPaws conference, one of the first things you’ll note, is how much money BlogPaws gives out. Not only do the Nose-to-Nose winners get a donation to the 501c3 charity of their choosing, this year more than one blogger received checks to their favorite charities.

And every year (at least those years I’ve attended) a K-9 Officer in the area receives a protective vest. This year it was Daisy, from the Myrtle Beach police department.

Also, every year the local Humane Society has a booth in the exhibitor hall. And every year, the Humane Society gets a donation. As many of us immersed in the animal welfare field know, medical expenses can be quite large. This year, besides the $2,000 check for the shelter, an anonymous donor gave a $20,000 donation to the veterinary clinic that serves the Humane Society of North Myrtle Beach. Just imagine the medical services they can get with $20,000.00!

Of course, there is always swag at BlogPaws.  LOTS OF SWAG. Sometimes you get items in your bag that you can’t use. There’s always a Swag Exchange table located in one of the common areas of the conference, where people can exchange their swag for something they want, or just leave it. When the exhibition hall closes, any items left on the Swag Exchange table is donated to local shelters. It’s nice to note that many of the exhibitors also donate product they have left. The shelters can then use the items for the benefit of their animals. Whether it is something like a treat or food, that they can absolutely use, or it’s a product they can use as a giveaway to help raise money for their shelter.

I admit, I did not keep track of everything that BlogPaws gave away this year, but I know for sure it was in excess of $60,000.00. Talk about giving back to the community!

This is just the beginning. I have SO much more to tell you and I was only gone for four days!

You’re Gonna Love My Nuts

April 21, 2017 By Jodi

Since I went back to work full-time, walking the dogs has been a challenge. Hubby works late three nights a week, but on his two early nights, he’s agreed to walk the dogs with me.

I’m not going to lie. I struggled the first week. The first night we went up to the woods. Delilah and I went one way and Hubby went the other way with Sampson. When I turned around and they were gone, I literally sobbed. When I told Hubby, he said he was pretty sure Sampson did too. 🙁

You guys, I’ve been walking both dogs by myself for at least five years. For the last two, they’ve been walked separately twice a day. I guess you could say, we’ve sort of got a rapport going.

Breaking that up is harder than hard.

SO, this week, Hubby and I have been walking the dogs together. I think it’s a bit of a challenge for Sampson, but we keep it slow and only go around the neighborhood or field.

I’ve said many times, I need to have a Go-Pro camera set-up, because you just can’t make this shit up.

We were walking past one of the houses with dogs that bark at us.  Delilah and I were ahead of Hubby by a good 25 to 45 feet.

I heard a noise, and it sounded like a dog hitting a blind. I heard Hubby said, “Now THAT was funny.”

I turned, saw a dog in the window and thought, the dog must have banged the blind or something.

Then Hubby says, “Do you see that nut rolling down the street?”

I turned to look and he pointed to the other side of the street, where sure enough, an acorn was rolling down the street, hugging the curb.

Apparently what happened was, a chipmunk with an acorn in his mouth was running across the street, when it suddenly realized Delilah and I were there.

The chipmunk must have experienced an OH SHIT moment, he dropped his nut and turned around and ran the other way.

Oh shit! I dropped a nut.

Neither Delilah or I saw him.

The things you see without your Go-Pro.

Inquiring minds…

March 29, 2017 By Jodi

I’m going to test long time reader’s memories. Do you remember that Caring For Critters Round Robin that took place back in September of 2014?

Courtesy of Jen Dehaan from Pizels.

For those new to the blog, or those that need a reminder of something that happened 2 1/2 years ago, this blog has a Community Page (located in the teal bar below the header and above the blog post,) or you can just click HERE.

The Round Robin involved a number of bloggers sharing their stories and experiences with medical and behavioral issues they’d experienced with their pets. There is a lot of good information there, but of course, not everything is covered.

There is a lot to learn from reading other people’s blogs, but sometimes, when your in a blind panic trying to figure out a course of treatment for your pet, you can’t always recall who posted about what.

Pet bloggers share a wealth of information. Whether they are entertaining, educating or just sharing experiences, I find I learn so much from all of you. I belong to a number of Pet/Blogger/Pet Blogger pages on Facebook, and when I’m searching for information regarding a health issue one of the dogs has, I stalk those pages. The one thing I haven’t found is a page dedicated to health issues.

Currently, Stone Manor is experiencing a couple of challenging health issues, and while I have reached out to those of you, that I know have dealt with them, I thought it might be nice to have a page just for health/behavioral issues.  Do any of you have an interest in such a page?

I plan to write about our issues in depth, it’s just right now, it seems like it’s one thing after another with these two. We’ve had recurring urinary tract infections for both dogs. Sampson has been struggling with his partial CCL tear, and now it seems like the Meniscus might have torn as well. Also, Delilah has lost five pounds in the last six months, and her recent blood tests has our vet thinking she has Inflammatory bowel.

Additionally, after having been on 20 hours of work a week since last July, I just been offered a new job and will be going back to work full-time on April 10th.

SO, what are your thoughts? Does anyone think a page for health would be worthwhile, or are there too many pages?

Inquiring minds want to know…
