Generally I try to be a very positive person, but trying to get this writing career of mine off the ground is really discouraging me.  Please don’t get me wrong, I have some very awesome friends and family who continue to read every day, to like my posts and to comment on my blog and I appreciate you more than I will ever be able to express.  Some day if I ever get my career off the ground, I intend to have a really big party and invite you all! 

I like to think I am a realistic person, I know I am not J.K. Rowling and I certainly don’t have a Harry Potter novel in me; I think I’m capable of being a writer and making a modest living at it.  I am not one of the people who think they are perfect, in fact I am very aware of my flaws and limitations and have no problem sharing those.  I am also not a mother who thinks her children can do no wrong and that extends to my dogs; as you obviously know if you have ever read anything I have written about Delilah.

So when I tell you that Sampson is special and that I want to share him with the world, it is not just my thoughts or ideas.  Anyone that meets Sampson falls in love with him; even if you are not a dog person you will love Sampson.  Besides being adorable, his personality is amazing and it terrifies me that he is getting older and I still have not shared him with enough people.

I’m not writing this so you all say, “Oh Jodi, don’t give up, you are a good writer” and all kinds of other stuff.  Why I’m writing this is to get your ideas.  So far, I’ve established facebook pages for both of the dogs, I have this blog and I have Sampson’s website, the problem is I don’t know what to do next or how to generate interest.   When I went to the Pet Writing Conference in February there was a woman there who was trying to find someone interested in her book, she was showing someone,  her dog has over 5,000 friends on facebook.  I sit here and go WTF?  Everyday I update those facebook pages!  I put funny sayings and thoughtful sayings and Sampson has lost 4 fans in the last month!  I guess I feel like I’m at an impasse and I wonder, am I too focused?  Am I overlooking something I should/could be doing? 

You all have been so supportive of me and always help me when I ask, so I ask you now, do you have any thoughts as to what I can do to help move this along?  If you aren’t comfortable leaving a message, send me an e-mail auntiejodi@hotmail.com

Where The Wild Things Are…Day One Hundred and Thirty

Chet was outside working in the yard; I went out to ask him something and I noticed the neighbor’s dog.

Immediately I thought, “Isn’t the dog a little old to have his tail docked?”  Then Chet told that the dog had gotten loose and gone to the park at the top of the street and came back missing his tail.  Something ferocious that is not afraid to attack a large dog lives in the woods at the top of the street.  The poor dog had bite marks all over his tail.  The neighbor told Chet the story and also indicated, “This dog does not back down from a fight.” 

I have to admit, I’m a little freaked out.  Without knowing the entire story, such as the time of day the dog got away, if it was gone overnight etc…it makes me a little nervous taking my dogs up to the woods.  I’m not entirely certain that Delilah wouldn’t want to try to fight. I do carry  Pepper Blaster II and had really thought about it more for protection against the two-legged predator as opposed to the four.  From what I’ve read, it should work on a wild animal.

 I wonder what kind and size of animal might be up in the woods and hungry and vicious enough to take on a large dog.  I know you can’t tell from the picture but this is a decent size dog; I would say somewhere in the weight range between Delilah (78 pounds) and Sampson (97 pounds.)

Chet said he thinks the dog is part Chow....that is nothing to fool with.

I’m very grateful that most days/evenings Chet goes walking with us, still I’m a wee bit  nervous about taking my dogs to where the wild things are.

You Need A Tick Kit …Day One Hundred and Twenty Nine

The other night when Sampson had the tick over his eye, Chet and I went crazy looking for our “tick kit.”  What is included in our tick kit is a nice pair of tweezers with broad, tapered ends and a “Ticked Off”, purported to be “The World’s Simplest” tick remover.   I must confess, it works pretty well.  Trouble was we couldn’t find our tick kit; so we had to make a new one.  When we have it; we keep our tick kit close by a covered glass jar, that has about a half to an inch of rubbing alcohol in it.  When I pull a tick off one of the dogs, it goes into the rubbing alcohol, where they eventually die.

Since we ran out of  Earth Animal, Bug off, I went online to see about purchasing some, Bug Off spray is listed at $26.99, the problem is that shipping is over $10!  So I sent Chet to Sweet Pea Pet Store to see if they sell it.  The don’t.  They did have something called “Neem Protect Spray”. Neem Oil is a known tick and flea repellent, so Chet bought some.  I don’t think it is as pure and natural as the Bug Off because it has Polysorbate 20 in it, but I think for now it will do the trick.

I think every house hold should have a tick remover kit, especially if you have dogs.  They are very easy (and pretty inexpensive) to put together, but can really come in handy should the situation arise where you need to remove a tick.
