Sampson’s Puzzled – This ‘N That Thursday

November 14, 2013 By Jodi

Today we join our friends at 2 Brown Dawgs along with their co-host Ruckus the Eskie for This ‘N That Thursday.  2 Brown Dawgs says it’s a little of this and a little of that and anything in between!

Delilah and I are back in Nosework class again!!

Tuesday night Delilah and I started Advanced Nosework.  For those unfamiliar with this sport, Donna from Donna and the Dogs has a small series running on her blog that explains this sport.

In our beginner class our hunts/finds were strictly food.  This time around we are introducing birch.  I’ll have a full post on how we’re doing that coming up soon.

In the meantime, here’s Delilah back in the classroom setting.  She’s just like her Mama, she loves to learn!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA Why are you making me wait?  I see the boxes in the middle of the room, let’s work!

 Then there were two.

Two weeks ago as I was taking my grandson home Hubby warned me of a dead deer in the road.  I don’t know about you but seeing any animal lifeless on the side of the road, just about breaks my heart.  It is so sad.

I worry about the deer.  The herd is getting smaller and smaller.  When we first moved to our home seven years ago there was a herd of about eight deer.  The last time I saw deer running in the woods there were three.

Last week the dogs were going ballistic and I looked out the window.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA Looks like the herd is down to two.

Jigsaw Puzzles

Do you like jigsaw puzzles?  I recently got into jigsaw puzzles on my iPad.  Sadly the one I loved didn’t update their app for the new operating system Apple came out with so I’m still in the market.  If any of you have a jigsaw app for your phone or iPad that you love, would you please share it?

In the meantime, I found this picture of Sampson standing on a trail of leaves and thought, that might make a pretty challenging puzzle.  What do you think?

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA Puzzle? You’ve got me puzzled with that thought Mama.

Follow-Up Friday

For those of you participating in tomorrow’s blog hop, my co-hostess is once again, the only Flea you wouldn’t mind hanging around your dog.  Yes, it’s Flea from Jones Natural Chews!

Join us tomorrow as we answer questions, highlight reader’s comments and wrap up our week!

Many thanks to 2 Brown Dawgs and Ruckus the Eskie.

It’s a Piece of Fruit

August 13, 2013 By Jodi

When I found out today was the two-year anniversary for the Tasty Tuesday blog hop I wanted to participate.  I had the option of baking something, sharing a frozen treat or showing what my dog would do for fruit.

Of course we all know I have the best intentions when it comes to making treats for my dogs but I rarely do.  When I’m going in the kitchen to bake it’s generally for myself.  I know what a selfish bitch.

I don’t do a lot of new frozen treats and when I do, I usually share them on the hop.

That left me with showing what my dog would do for a piece of fruit.  I chose Delilah to represent.

Delilah is food motivated.  No secret there.  In fact she’s so food motivated it is sometimes difficult to work with her, she’s so damn enthusiastic.  One of the first times I used the clicker she was so focused on the food in my hand she couldn’t do anything.  I asked a trainer how to get her to focus on something other than the food.  She said use a food with a lesser value.  I didn’t have the heart to tell her I was using a canned green bean.

It’s a bountiful fruit time in the northeast, yet I had no fresh fruit available, so I turned to my freezer.

We started off with a bowl of frozen pineapple.

We started off with a bowl of frozen pineapple.

I will sit for a frozen piece of pineapple. Yes I will.

Will I sit for a frozen piece of pineapple? Yes I will.

I will down for a frozen piece of pineapple. Yes I will.

Will I down for a frozen piece of pineapple? Yes I will.

I will sit pretty for a piece of frozen pineapple. Yes I will.

Will I sit pretty for a piece of frozen pineapple? Yes I will.

I will wiggle on my back for a piece of frozen pineapple. Yes I will.

Will I wiggle on my back for a piece of frozen pineapple? Yes I will.

They say a picture is worth 1,000 words, but it certainly cannot convey Delilah’s enthusiasm for this little bowl of pineapple in my hands.

Would you like to see what else I'll do for a piece of frozen pineapple Mama?

Would you like to see what else I’ll do for a piece of frozen pineapple Mama?  Yes I would Delilah.

So we shot a little video.  Except I transferred it to the Mac and deleted it from the camera in the process.  And I couldn’t upload the video to You Tube.

For the record, I’m pissed off.  At You Tube.  And myself.  But after talking with my IT person at work, I have hopes that I can figure it out, but not until I’m home sitting in front of the Mac.

I’m sorry.  I screwed up and you got screwed out of a cute video.  With any luck, I will have it available tonight and I will update this post and include the video in This ‘N That Thursday as well as Follow-Up Friday.

Keep your fingers crossed.

Congratulations to Jodi Chick and her awesome blog, Kol’s Notes and her fantastic co-host Sugar the Golden Retriever for sharing and celebrating Tasty Tuesday’s for two years!   We look forward to sharing many more with you.

UPDATE:  Yes!  I figured it out.  Without further ado, here is proof of what Delilah will do for a piece of frozen pineapple.

Standing Outside The Fire

June 12, 2013 By Jodi

Last night was the last Freestyle class for Delilah and myself.   Ariane said it could be as long or as short as we’d like.  I figured if I could string three tricks together I’d be happy.  I took the four or five solid tricks she knows and plotted it out in my head, how I might be able to make them flow together.

All week I’d been thinking of the song I’d play for our performance, I was pretty set on “Hey There Delilah” by The Plain White Tees, but decided to go through my songs on the way to class and see if I found one I thought fit her personality a bit better.

As it turns out, I thought the lyrics to Standing Outside the Fire by Garth Brooks exemplified her zest for life pretty well.

We call them cool
Those hearts that have no scars to show
The ones that never do let go
And risk the tables being turned

We call them fools
Who have to dance within the flame
Who chance the sorrow and the shame
That always comes with getting burned

But you’ve got to be tough when consumed by desire
‘Cause it’s not enough just to stand outside the fire

We call them strong
Those who can face this world alone
Who seem to get by on their own
Those who will never take the fall

We call them weak
Who are unable to resist
The slightest chance love might exist
And for that forsake it all

They’re so hell-bent on giving ,walking a wire
Convinced it’s not living if you stand outside the fire

Standing outside the fire
Standing outside the fire
Life is not tried, it is merely survived
If you’re standing outside the fire

There’s this love that is burning
Deep in my soul
Constantly yearning to get out of control
Wanting to fly higher and higher
I can’t abide
Standing outside the fire

Standing outside the fire
Standing outside the fire
Life is not tried, it is merely survived
If you’re standing outside the fire

Standing outside the fire
Standing outside the fire
Life is not tried, it is merely survived
If you’re standing outside the fire

Normally I love to go first.  Not last night.  I waited.  We went fourth.  What I didn’t anticipate was a change in venue, from our little corner of the room to the center.  The center she associates with scent training.

Yeah, I lost her a couple of times.  But I promised you the video so here it is.  Ariane was filming and might have missed the first few seconds.

If the video doesn’t work, click HERE.

Next time it might be wise to let her scope out the food situation BEFORE we start the routine.  I do think she has some great spins and her leg weaves are coming along nicely.  We’re certainly not ready to step into a real ring!  Although I would like to continue working on tricks and work up a little routine.

I think she has potential, what do you think?
