Dogs Just Want to Have Fun

October 3, 2013 By Jodi

Sung to the tune of Girls Just Want to Have Fun, by Cyndi Lauper.

The phone rings, in the middle of the night
It’s Jodi Chick yelling, “you know it’s K-9 Kamp, right?”
Oh Jodi dear, you know that labs like to run
But this time we’re gonna have fu-un,
Oh this time, we’re gonna have fun.

Delilah here, letting you know that the Mama dropped the ball (literally and figuratively) once again for the K-9 Kamp challenge hosted by Kol’s Notes and Peggy’s Pet Place. Luckily she has me here to pull her into it, kicking and screaming if necessary.

I’m definitely up for that challenge.

Siriusly, I generally have to pull the Mama up the hills while we’re walking.  You’d think after three years of daily walks, she’d be in some kind of shape, but sadly, no.

The last time she managed to make it up the hill on her own she swallowed a bug.  Honestly, you’d have thought her life was ending.  She choked, coughed and gagged then cried, “I swallowed a bug,  a bug!  I swallowed a bug!”

Good grief Mama, it’s just a little extra protein, be glad you didn’t get charged for it.

So the Mama’s all goofing off on facebook the other day and she sees that Kol’s Notes posted a reminder about K-9 Kamp.  Then some really bad words came out of her mouth and she got all feverish on the facebook chat with Jodi Chick about K-9 Kamp.

Rumor has it the Mama asked Jodi Chick if an e-mail went out.  I’m a dog and if dogs could get embarrassed that would certainly embarrass me.  Let’s just say, that the Mama has decent organizational skills when she chooses to use them, but Jodi Chick puts her to shame.  Oh Mama, it’s a good thing Koly and Fe live so far away, Sampson and I would never live this down.

Let’s face it, the Mama totally did not do her part in the last K-9 Kamp challenge.  Oh she walked us all right, but she should have been shouting up a storm about what we were doing and trying her best to keep people motivated.  Truthfully, it’s sometimes difficult keeping the Mama motivated.  We try, we really do but short of dangling M & M’s  in front of her, not much motivates that one.

So the theme for this portion of K-9 Kamp is  “Get active with your dog, 30 minutes extra, 3 or 4 times a week.  And they’re looking for fun things to do, like play fetch, chase your dog, let your dog chase you, swim, do agility, play frisbee.

Bubbers

Good thing the Mama found (yes FOUND) this Frisbee at the park, would you believe the woman didn’t own a Frisbee?  It’s a wonder I’m in any kind of shape at all.  Although dragging her around on the leash really does give me quite a bit of resistance.

Well I’ve heard it said, “If you want something done right, do it yourself.”  So I’m taking over for the K-9 Kamp Challenge, and I’m going to make sure the Mama does her part to help us have a little bit of fun every single day.

It’s true Sampson is a bit older, and doesn’t care much for fetching, but I’m going to give the Mama some suggestions and hopefully get her motivated.  I happen to know there is a big old bag of M & M’s in the fridge, so I have plenty of treats to get her up and moving.  AND to keep her honest, we’re going to be reporting back at least once a week and giving YOU some ideas and fun things you can do with your dogs, even if they’re a bit older and don’t have the stamina they once had.

So are you up for this challenge?

Say yes, say yes, say yes! (Sorry, I’m a lab after-all.)

Alright then, let’s do this!!

FOLLOW-UP Friday – the Mama’s working with Lynda from Two Ears and a Tail, to be tomorrow’s co-host of the Follow-Up Friday Blog hop.  She’ll update this post if for some reason that changes.

Human Shaming

My goal when I sit down to write a blog post is to bring a smile to someone’s face, it’s not always easy with some of the topics I tackle which is why when an opportunity comes to let it rip, I try and jump on that bandwagon.

Well friends, the opportunity is next Wednesday.  Back by popular demand Heart Like a Dog will be taking part in the Human Shaming Blog Hop hosted by Kol’s Notes and My Brown Newfies.  For those readers new to the blog, Sampson and Delilah really took me to task last year.  If you’re interested you can read all about it here. Funny stuff?  Yes.  A  little embarrassing?  Definitely!!

humanshaming1 To be truthful, I’m a tad bit nervous thinking of the humiliating photos I’ve had taken this year and wondering what those two will come up with.

The Flooding in Colorado

I’m sure by now you’ve heard the horror stories coming out of Colorado, they are calling it the 100 year flood and it means exactly that, the type of flooding that generally happens only once in a 100 year period.

As you know, when a natural disaster affects people it also affects our pets.  The numbers are staggering:

  • 21 helicopters were being used Monday for evacuations
  • 11,750 people have been evacuated
  • 8 people have lost their lives
  • 658 people are still unaccounted for, which means no one has been able to get a hold of them. This number continues to decline as more people are rescued.
  • This is being called the 100 Year Flood, here’s a little on what that means: http://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/FS-229-96/
  • Approximately 2,377 agricultural properties have been affected
  • 36 shelters are now open serving hundreds of people and pets
  • Flood conditions are spread across 200 miles covering 15 counties (these facts are courtesy of BlogPaws.)

Helping Pets in the Colorado Flood Disaster - BlogPaws Be the Change for Pets

As a member of The Blogger Disaster Response Network, I’ve taken a pledge to help get the word out, so people who are interested in helping know where to go to help.

No surprise but many companies have stepped up to help animals that are affected by this disaster, I urge you to check out the BlogPaws website if you are interested in helping.

The Fox and the Hounds

September 12, 2013 By Jodi

Today we’re joining our friends at 2 Brown Dawgs Blog for the This ‘N That Thursday Blog hop.

It’s a little of this and a little of that and everything in between…

Alter Egos

Do you have an alter ego?  You know, Superman had Clark Kent, Spiderman had Peter Parker, Ironman had Tony Stark.  Jodi Stone has… well mostly I call her My Inner Bitch (MIB for short.)  It’s the little voice inside my head that says funny shit that sometimes escapes my mouth, she’s also sarcastic and at times can be plain mean.

I try and keep the mean one in check, but sometimes I open my mouth and out she pops.  Ooops!

What the woof are you barking at?

Monday I was prepping to walk the dogs.  This means changing my clothes, loading up my pockets, spraying the dogs etc.  Typically the dogs are wherever I am.  They know they are going on a walk and they’re super excited.

I opened the back door just in case someone couldn’t wait to potty and started about my business.

There was a symphony playing outside.

“Caw, Caw” said the crow.

It was followed by “trk trk trk trk trk trk” or something like a cross between a purr and teeth chattering.

Both dogs bolted for the door.

I put on my sneakers and gathered my things all the while listening to the cacophony of noise.

“Caw, caw, caw”

“Trk trk trk”

“Woof woof!”

Over and over again.

I looked out the door.  The dogs were at the fence intent on something in the neighbor’s yard.

“Caw caw”

“Trk trk trk”

“Woof woof!”

I thought the ‘trk’ sound was the sound a raccoon made, so I thought maybe there’s an injured raccoon outside and the crow is telling it to hurry up and die.

“Caw caw” Hurry up, I want to pick your dead carcass.

“Trk trk trk trk.” Eff off, I’m busy here.

Delilah, “Woof woof!” I’m putting my money on the crow.

Sampson, “Woof woof!” Hurry up and get on with it, we’re getting ready for our walk.

(Okay, so I made that conversation up.)

I walked outside to join the dogs at the fence and look at the dying raccoon.  Except it wasn’t a raccoon!!  It was that wily, sneaky, elusive fox!

Right there in my neighbor’s back yard eating something off the ground.  He turned and looked at me.

Dammit!!  Why didn’t I have my camera?

That’s when MIB spoke up.  Are you dressed for a walk or what?  You’re friggin’ camera is in your back pocket.

What? What?

Damn that bitch was right!  And the little guy was looking right at me smiling for the camera.

Fox Copyright

Don’t be fooled by the blurry photo, that fox is smiling.  His whole face says, “Cheese!”

MIB, “You really need a better camera.”

Me, “Yeah?  Take your show on the road and make some money, then we’ll get a better camera.”

Not the point, the point is it’s a point and shoot.  (God I crack myself up sometimes.) My excuse is I might have been a little shaky, you know from excitement, at actually seeing the fox.  Yeah, that’s it.  So I snapped a couple more.

Fox 2 Copyright

I must have calmed down some, but he also wasn’t looking at the camera either.  Two points to note here:

1) I was surprised by how long his tail was. When looking at the photo on the camera it sort of looks like a kangaroo.  2)  Do you notice how close he is to the neighbor’s deck?  Yes, this is the same neighbor that was concerned because we had a snake in our yard.  Yet she has two small boys and a dog that live here and play in this backyard.

And winner, winner chicken dinner, JoAnn called it!  When I finally got the photo of Delilah lifting her leg JoAnn said, “glad you finally caught it maybe your luck is changing and you will get the fox next.”

Dogs N Paws

Many of you know Lisa Brown from Dogs N Pawz, she’s the creator of Tuesday’s Tails blog hop, the hop that focuses on helping shelter animals find their forever homes.  Last week there was a tragedy at their house and Teddy was hurt, and they lost Phe, and I know Lisa’s really hurting right now so if you could stop by and offer a kind word, I know she’d appreciate it.

Follow-up Friday

Joining me tomorrow for co-hosting duties is the infamous Flea from Jones Natural Chews.  This gal is a riot, so be prepared to laugh.

That’s it for me, many thanks to our friends at the 2 Brown Dawgs Blog.
