A Brut Moment Challenge Starring Delilah

November 3, 2012 By Jodi

I saw this challenge on the No Dog About It Blog Thursday, at the time Thursday’s post was already up and Friday’s post was planned.

I mean the whole point of the Follow-Up Friday blog hop is to have a follow-up, what kind of host would I be if I didn’t?

I noticed yesterday that a couple of other bloggers did the challenge and I thought, oh good there’s still time for me.  I wandered over to 24 Paws of Love and realized the blog hop would end before today’s post.

Seeing my fellow blogger’s sharing their stories, made me a little misty and even though I mentioned it in a couple of comments, I thought it was worth sharing with everyone.

The challenge was such:

Tell us in a post what was the most monumental moment that you and your dog shared, that changed the course of your lives together.  How ever big or small, what happened that brought an understanding between you and your dog and brought your relationship closer than it was before.  What is that one story in your mind that stands out and you repeat over and over to anyone that will listen?  Tell us all about it!!

This is Delilah’s Brut Moment.

Delilah’s been with our family for 5 1/2 years.

In Delilah’s Story which you can find directly under my header, under the drop down labeled the Cast of Characters, I wrote about Delilah’s first day with us.  She was frustrating that day, but she was also strong and vulnerable.

It was a rough first day, noticed the red-rimmed eyes.

The moment I watched her struggle to stay sitting up and not fall asleep was the moment I vowed, that I would not be another human that failed her.   I was determined to help her, yet I didn’t feel like we were bonded.

The moment I feel in love with her.

Early this spring when I had the most frustrating walk with her, (you can read about it here) I felt defeated.  I remember saying to Hubby, I don’t feel like I matter to her, it’s as if we aren’t bonded.  Sadly he agreed with me.

I love her, don’t get me wrong and I know she loves me, but I still didn’t feel like we were bonded.  Maybe it was me, I couldn’t tell you for sure.

I remember the moment it all changed for me, I was so proud of her, I could have burst.  It made me feel SO good that if I were Harry Potter I could have produced a Patronous. (Which by the way, I hope it would be a dog or a wolf.)

After I let myself wallow in my sorrow for a few days, I set out to find a way to bond with her.  I read, “Bonding With Your Dog” by Victoria Schade, which gave me some great insight. (Thank you Pamela!)

I have been wanting Delilah to try a nosework class, the training group that was offering it requires you take an intermediate dog and handler class first.  Since it was all positive based training, I thought what the hell, it never hurts to try different trainers.

I’d been doing positive based training on my own for some time, but I was super excited to find a positive training class.  I am one of those who learn better by seeing.

I had mentioned to the instructor Jackie, that Delilah sometimes reacted to other dogs.  Jackie suggested I really watch Delilah to determine what exactly she was reacting to.  She also suggested I begin using the LOOK command.

Using this command really helped Delilah focus on me.  As soon as I saw her tense up as if she was set to react, I would say LOOK and she would whip her head back around and refocus on me.

I think it was during the fourth (out of six) class, Jackie was working the class on the leave it command and was testing us, on how well we could redirect our dogs.

Jackie was going to come around and drop some treats on the floor near us, our goal was to redirect our dog to ignore, or leave the treats.

The class was small and people really had lots of space to spread out with their dogs, if you have a reactive dog, you can appreciate how important this really is.  As it turned out we ended up being the last pair tested.

I had Delilah’s attention as Jackie started around the room, I kept her attention with a treat up near my nose and i talked to her the entire time.

That’s right, focus on me.  You’re doing great.  What a good girl you are. We can do this. Were all phrases that came out of my mouth as one by one my classmates were put through the test.

I could hear Jackie making her way around the room and then it was our turn, Jackie approached us from the right side.

Now here’s the thing about Delilah and distractions, you can bounce a ball in front of her face all day long and she won’t even flinch, but drop a treat and all bets are off.

Delilah’s head turned slightly at Jackie’s approach but I was spot on, LOOK, she whipped her head back to me, LEAVE IT I said as a handful of pupperoni’s hit the floor.

There we were, her sitting and me standing, eyes locked.  We were a team.

To me, that was our bonding moment.

Did you have a bonding moment with your dog, one that stood out like no other?  Please share in the comments, I might not be responding to you, but I sure am reading them!

The word count for my NaNoWriMo book writing challenge is just over 3.600 words.

Heart Like A Dog

August 27, 2012 By admin

As most of you know, I’ve been looking to take the next step with my blog.  For me that means moving it from the free WordPress account to a self-hosted blog.  My struggle has been what to name the new blog.

The problem is that the wordpress account was www.jodistone.wordpress.com.  Normally speaking you wouldn’t want to change the blog name, just remove the wordpress and make the account a dot.com.

As I’ve mentioned here, there are already at least two authors using the name Jodi Stone, one of which has the website with the dot.com, which meant that I can’t use my name.

I could have gone with, Life With Sampson and Delilah but my plan is to have an official website for all my writings, and some of those writings may not be about Sampson and Delilah.

For months I’ve been popping around your blogs saying, “Just Be The Dog.”

I really did love that saying, but as I’ve mentioned in earlier posts there is already a website with a similar name.

After months of agonizing and indecision, I saw a saying posted on facebook one day and it ended with Heart Like A Dog.  I knew immediately that was the perfect name for my blog.

When I think of a dog’s heart, I think of courage, faith, determination, persistence, generosity, wisdom, devotion, strength and love.  These are just some of the traits I admire in my dogs.

To give of myself to others like my dogs give to me, is a worthy goal in my opinion.

Yes, it’s true, I really want to be more like my dogs.

Great!  I found a blog name.  Then the real agonizing began, I didn’t want to ‘launch’ it until it was perfect. The problem is I know very little about marketing and designing websites and that’s where some of my amazing blog friends came to my rescue.

Without these incredible women, this blog would not be here today.

So I’d like to say a huge thank you to:

Jodi Chick from Kol’s Notes who spent a rainy (at least it was rainy here) Sunday afternoon listening to me whine chatting with me on facebook and who was the one who came up with the tagline, The Life, Loves and Writings of Jodi Stone.  (I think it’s something in the name.) 😉

Julie Melfi (yes, Cali’s mom) from The Daily Dog Blog, who transferred the blog from the free wordpress account to the bluehost server, and has answered many ‘how do I do this’ e-mails.  Maybe you didn’t know this about Julie, but besides writing a daily blog, she’s also a website designer.  You can check her out at legupcreative.com.

And last, but certainly not least Kari Pike from Houndgirl who designed the entire website.  That header, she whipped it up one afternoon.  I can tell you here and now, her child is extremely lucky because Kari has the patience of a saint.  I’m a bit of a perfectionist and she never said a bad thing or told me to shut my pie hole and stop e-mailing her.

These ladies all come highly recommended by me.

Jodi, Julie and Kari, thank you from the bottom of my heart. xoxo

(If I did this right, you were re-directed to this site automatically.  I’m not sure how it works as far as subscribing to the blog or how it is affected in your blog readers.  Please take a moment to add my feed to your readers.  I’ll be working on the subscribe button this week.)

Please bear with me as I figure out the social media buttons and how to subscribe features. 🙂

Don't Project – Be The Dog

June 24, 2012 By Jodi

I probably shouldn’t admit this, but there are some blogs that I just can’t wait to read.  When I sign into my google reader I go straight for those blogs.  Of course I won’t tell you which ones I read first, because that would be like telling one of your kids that you liked them better than the other. 🙂

I’m going to go on record right now saying, I want to be your favorite blog in your google reader, and I plan on working hard to make it so.

I’m loving the “Be The Dog” slogan, that’s all I’ve thought about since yesterday.  There are so many lessons we can learn from our dogs, not least of which is not to project what is going to happen, but to live in the now.

We all know dogs are not linear thinkers, they do not have the capabilities of projecting (or anticipating if you will) what will happen next.

There have been a couple of times while out walking where I’ve lost Sampson.   Usually it is because he has seen or smelled something and run off to investigate.  In the meantime I have continued walking but Sampson doesn’t understand the concept that I was here and now I’m there.  He cannot project where I will be upon his return.  He only knows where I was when he left me.  Sampson lives in the now.

As you know Delilah has run off on me a number of times, the worst (for me) being the day she got stuck under someone’s air conditioner. Delilah does not project the outcome when she runs off.  All she knows is there is something far more exciting than whatever it is that I have in my treat bag.  She does not project that if she runs off, on our next walk she will be on leash and not allowed those freedoms.  Delilah lives in the now.

We need to learn to live in the now.  To not project what will happen if we write that slightly controversial blog post, or submit a query letter to an agent.  You will never know unless you try.

When you are older, sitting on the porch in your rocking chair telling stories to your great-grand children let them be stories about things you’ve accomplished, don’t let them be regrets for not having tried.

If it is something you want to do, just DO IT.  Don’t be afraid about what might happen. Don’t put that kind of restriction on yourself, live in the now.

Don’t Project – Be The Dog.
