Trail Blazers

January 6, 2013 By Jodi

Last Saturday afternoon it started snowing and it snowed all afternoon and well into the night.

You may remember poor little Beauregard did NOT want to go out in the snow without his jacket. 🙁

I don't care what you offer me, I ain't goin.

I don’t care what you offer me, I ain’t goin.

Sunday morning when we got up we realized we’d had between 8 to 10 inches.  The dogs didn’t care, they still wanted their walk so I threw on my snow pants and headed out.

Hubby was already outside blowing snow.

Good thing, because the car got stuck in all that deep, wet, snow that the plow deposits at the end of the driveway.

Yeah, that's the snow blower from the driver's window.

Yeah, that’s the snow blower from the driver’s window.

The dogs couldn’t wait to race through the snow, but I was slightly intimidated by the sight that met my eyes.

That's a lot of snow to plod through.

That’s a lot of snow to plod through.

While we weren’t the first ones to explore the fresh snow, the going was still tough.  I’d forgotten how hard it is walking through deep snow.

It took me twice as long to do one loop as it usually takes me to do two.  I was sweating pretty good when I was done, but the dogs were loving it.

Oh I love the snow!!

Oh I love the snow!!

Sampson

Come on in mom, the water’s snow is fine.

Up to our necks

This is fun, can we do this again?

Thankfully many feet have been walking the trails this past week and the going is much easier.

Heart Like a Dog Lesson: Take time to do something fun, like play in the snow.

Are you a trailblazer? Or are you like me and prefer to have someone else do the work? 😉

Over the River

January 5, 2013 By Jodi

Sung to the tune of Over the River and Through the Woods

Over the river and through the field
Across the snow we fly
Our feet lead the way
We’re happy and gay
While mom and dad just sigh

Over the river and through the field
A fresh sniffing place we spy
Hurrah for the fun, it feels good to run
Hurrah for the bright blue sky

Yup, Hubby and I took Sampson and Delilah for a nice walk in the woods on New Year’s day.  Just as we turned to make the pass down along the field, Sampson and Delilah took off at a run.

By the time we reached the crest, they were long gone.

We could just make them out way on the other side of the field.

We could just make them out way on the other side of the field.

Since  we could still see them we shouted for them.

They kept running.

Hubby whistled for them.

They ran into the woods.

I won’t tell you what I said, but you can be sure the F word was involved.

We made our way down the rocks and crossed the little stream to take the short cut to the field, calling for them all the while.

Stream

That little fluff of snow you see in the middle. I thought it was a branch. Turns out it was two branches and did not make a very good bridge.

There was nothing for it.  I had to break a path across the field through about 9 inches of fluffy snow.  I kept calling.  Sampson was the first to appear, he met me about half-way across the field.

Snow

This picture was taken a few days before, but you get a sense of how deep it is.

Delilah must have run the length of the field and circled around because she came at me from a different direction.

It always takes me by surprise, because she does SO well and then BOOM she runs off.  The rarity is that Sampson goes with her.

The silver lining is, that she did come back and I learned a new area I have to be cautious of.

Dogs, they’re always full of surprises, no?

Hunting Bigfoot

January 2, 2013 By Jodi

I have big feet.

It’s mostly due to their width, if they were hairy and dirty they’d be Hobbit feet.  But they’re not. Hairy and dirty I mean, nor are they Hobbit feet.

Sorry, I digress.  For the sake of the post, let’s just call them large.

Before we had the huge snowfall this past weekend, we had a slight covering on Christmas morning.

One of the things I love about walking in the fresh snow is observing tracks of creatures two and four-legged that have traveled the trails before us.

We discovered someone or something bigger than I, had already been through the trails.

That's a big foot!

That’s a big foot!

I called the dogs to me.

Sampson, Delilah listen to me.  There may be something very large on these trails.  We need to be sharp if we’re going to catch this wily creature.

Roger that mom, never fear, we’re on the trail.

So you're saying it's large and hairy and probably smells bad?

I'll go first and see if I can pick up his trail.

I’ll go first and see if I can pick up his trail.

You go that way Sampson, I think I smell something back here. Oh wait, that's just mom.

You go that way Sampson, I think I smell something back here. Oh wait, that’s just mom.

He's definitely been in these leaves.

He’s definitely been in these leaves.

Well he's not down here.

Well he’s not down here.

It looks like there's been a fire, do you think he knows how to start one?

Mom sprang a trap that Bigfoot had set to catch dinner. Lucky we were here to save her.

Oh NO! His foot prints are all over these sleigh tracks. I hope he didn't eat Santa.

Piss on you Bigfoot! Stay out of our woods.

Piss on you Bigfoot! Stay out of our woods.

We've sniffed and searched mom, I think we're safe.

We’ve sniffed and searched mom, I think we’re safe.

Well after almost an hour of searching we had to come to the conclusion that either Bigfoot was good at hiding, or there is in reality, no Bigfoot.

Did you ever encounter something odd on any of your walks?
