Sampson and Delilah

July 11, 2013 By Jodi

Sampson

When you have a dog like Sampson, you want to share him with the world.  Unfortunately there’s not a lot to write about dogs like Sampson on a normal day.  Some days though, they do something so wonderful that you just have to share.

I found out on Tuesday that one of the women I graduated with had passed away.  It certainly wasn’t the first classmate we’d lost.  But it hit me particularly hard.

Not because we were close friends in school, in fact we ran in totally different circles.  Donna was a cheerleader and what I considered to be one of the popular girls.  I was shy and hung with a lot of younger kids.

But when I went to our last high school reunion (my first in 24 years)  Donna was the only one from that crowd who greeted and embraced me.

We e-mailed a couple of times after that and then we became friends on facebook.

Donna was a great supporter of this blog, and gave me lots of encouragement.  She got sick a while ago and I knew it was cancer of some sort but I didn’t know what kind.  I left messages on her facebook page, sent a card here and there and got busy with life.

I found out from her obituary that she’d been living with recurrent brain cancer for twenty years.

When I went home on Tuesday I laid on the floor with Sampson and I cried, mostly silent tears but every now and again an audible sob would escape my lips and when that happened my sweet, sweet boy would lift his head and enthusiastically lick my face.

I’d know what to say if Donna were a dog, but Donna lived life fast and free.  Instead I will say, “Donna, your light will continue to shine in those you love and who loved you in return.  Be at peace.”

Delilah

Tuesday night my friend Arianne, who is also my trainer posted this photo on my facebook page.

Her caption said, "Why is it that I can picture Delilah standing on your counters? ;)"

Her caption said, “Why is it that I can picture Delilah standing on your counters? ;)”

To which I responded, “well one, this dog looks like Delilah and two, it’s totally something she would do!!”

It also may be because you've seen her stick her head in a traffic cone.

It also may be because you’ve seen her stick her head in a traffic cone.

You've also seen her climb through a folding camp chair looking for food.

Siriusly, the only reason Delilah hasn’t climbed on my counters is that she hasn’t thought of it.

Yet.

When Delilah first joined us we lived in a different house.  That house was very small but it had a beautiful bay window in the living room.  I always wanted to add some pillows to the window and make a seat for reading but I never did.  Mostly the bay window ended up collecting stuff.

Our couch was positioned in such a way that the bay window was on the left and I would sit there in the afternoon and could see Hubby pull into the yard.

One day in her excitement of Daddy coming home Delilah ran into the living room and jumped into the window, where she sat.

Like a cat.

Yes Arianne, I could totally see Delilah on my kitchen counter.

Seven Ways to Pissed Off

July 8, 2013 By Jodi

I want to live my life with a heart like a dog, loving, trusting, forgiving.  I really do.  But I’m human after-all and sometimes I fail and when I fail, I usually fail miserably.

Wednesday when we entered the park I noticed a couple of posts had been hammered into the ground.

I wonder what they’re going to put on those? I said to Hubby, A sign that says no fires and no drinking in the park that the kids will promptly pull off and probably burn?

It was a flippant remark, half in jest, half-true.  I’ve called and complained to the town about the kids smashing glass bottles, making bombs out of soda bottles and breaking off tree limbs in order to have a fire.

For the record, I haven’t complained about them smoking pot or having sex up there and leaving their used condoms in the field.

Just. For. The. Record.  I want it to be known that I’m mean, but I’m not that mean. After all I was a kid once myself.

Thursday when we pulled up to the park, I found out what the sign posts were for.

  • Why pick up after your pet?
  • It is being a good neighbor.
  • Vernon town ordinance 232, It’s the law.  $25 fine per occurrence.
  • It protects the environment.
  • The average sized dog dropping produces 3 Billion Fecal Coliform Bacteria.

Over on the left side of the path, was a lovely new Poop Station.

There’s a little sign next to this that says, “Compliments of the James Family.”

It was hot out.  I was already hot.  My temper got hot.  So hot.  I think I could have spit nails.  I went from calm and collected to seven ways to pissed off.  Why?

  1. It’s ostentatious.  A nice poop station with some basic information about waste would be fine. (Although with the nimrods that walk their dogs up there, this might really be necessary.)
  2. It shows me the folks that are focusing on poop pick up don’t have a clear idea of why there’s so much unclaimed poop. I mean, how the hell can you pick up after your dog, if you have no idea where your dog actually is?
  3. People with dogs that use this entrance to the park are few.  Not counting the people with the pugs who live four houses down and walk their pugs up there just to take a dump.  And then leave it.  My mother thinks he actually works for the town.  They need to post this information at the illegal entrance to the park, the area where at least eight different dog owners enter, some who bring their dogs in just to let them pinch a loaf. Not one of them with leashes, never mind poop bags.
  4. Poop bags and pamphlets are just one more thing the kids will take and scatter about the park.  In fact, I found about six of them out in the street yesterday when we went for our walk.
  5. Why are they focusing on dogs?  Nobody goes in and gets pissed off because the deer crapped in the field, or the horse that left a huge land mine in the middle of the trail, that I needed Carabiners and ropes to climb over.
  6. One poop station at the entrance to a park.  Maybe your dogs are trained to poop on command but mine aren’t.  They usually crank a steamer in the middle of the park. I still have to carry that stinky bag through the park.  Have I mentioned the bugs?  There are bugs in the park and guess what?  They like the smell of poop.
  7. Signs and poop bags are nice, but they don’t compare to two feet patrolling the park and actually ticketing people for letting their dogs drop ass wherever they want.  If you want to put a stop to the problem you actually need to start ticketing people.

I’ve calmed down some since the initial viewing, which is a good thing.  As I’m about to call the town and state my case and it’s always better if I do this when I’m wagging my tail instead of growling and snarling.

What pisses you off about where you walk your dog?  Are there any situations where the powers in charge don’t seem to really have a grasp about the issue?

BlogPaws Disaster Response Network

Many of you may not be aware but BlogPaws along with Pet 360 and World Vets has teamed up to help pets in need when disaster strikes.  It is a response team of bloggers who help spread the word of ways the animal loving community can assist pets when disaster strikes.

Typically the biggest need in such a disaster is cash, so BlogPaws is reaching out to their generous sponsors and asking for donations.

Team Up For Oklahoma

They’ve kindly made a button for bloggers to display on our pages, so readers, if they are so inclined, can donate.  Donations will be accepted through May 28th and the collective donation will be announced once the money is ready for delivery.

If you’re not comfortable helping in this fashion, there are a number of other ways you can help, Flea being from Oklahoma has a number of links on her blog.

Bark For Your Park

While I was at BlogPaws I stopped by the PetSafe booth and they were incredibly awesome (more on that in a later post.)  Tuesday I got an e-mail from Robin reminding me that their Bark for Your Park contest was still open until May 31st.

Have you ever dreamed of having a fabulous dog park in your town?  Well PetSafe is giving you the chance.  One lucky city will win a $100,000 dog park and four runners-up will receive $25,000.

Of course if you already have a fabulous dog park, you can always vote for mine. 😀

What’s my passion?

The whole weekend I was at BlogPaws I kept sitting in sessions and thinking, how do I define my blog in order to move it forward? Do I want to focus on dogs, healthy products, lessons I’ve learned?  What? What do I want to do?

How can I possibly move this blog forward if I have no idea what I want to write about?

I turned to my mentor and dear friend Jodi Chick, who has coached and encouraged me through so much of my wishy-washy whining.

Her words of wisdom?  “Follow your bliss. The niche is in there somewhere.”

(Note to self: do not engage in though provoking dialogue with Jodi, just before bed time.)

I did say they were words of wisdom didn’t I? I told her I was going to bed and hoped to dream my ‘bliss.’  Well I didn’t do a lot of dreaming, but I did do a lot of thinking. And then it came to me.

As a little girl I always wanted to be an entertainer.  If I can entertain you with stories and antidotes and that brings a smile to your face, or a laugh to your lips, that makes me happy!

If I can give encouragement to someone who is struggling with a difficult dog, that’s amazing.

If I can share my love of dogs and maybe educate someone in the process, well winner, winner, chicken dinner!!

A little tweaking on the blog design, a change in the header and redefinition of the tag line and I’m off to the races!

Follow-Up Friday Blog Hop

Last week I introduced a new tradition on this blog and that is announcing my co-hostess for tomorrow’s blog hop.  So without further ado, my co-hostess for tomorrow is Pup Fan from I Still Want More Puppies!

Oh and just because, here is Sampson when he was a little punkin.

See you tomorrow!
