Off to the Mountains

December 1, 2015 By Jodi

Friday morning we packed up the car and the dogs, and headed to my sister and brother-in-law’s house in the wilds of New Hampshire. Ok, so technically it’s not actually wild, it’s Littleton, but it’s in the White Mountains and it’s fairly rural, so I call it the wilds.

I was a bit nervous to go up there because my sister has three dogs and her living/dining/kitchen area is all hardwood flooring. I was worried that five excited dogs and hardwood floors could be challenging for Sampson and I was concerned he might slip and hurt himself.

I figured we won’t know unless we try, so I dug out my Dr. Busby’s toe grips and threw them in the dog’s bag along with all their other gear and off we went.

I’m happy to report that my fears were unfounded. Even when the dogs got super excited, Sampson did very well, in fact, I didn’t even need to put the toe grips on him.

One of the things I really love about going to New Hampshire (besides visiting my sister) is walking the dogs on her property. Her house sits on 11 acres, most of which is free of trees. Her driveway is quite long and just walking that is good exercise for the dogs. PLUS, they can be off-leash as long as I keep a close eye on them.

Even Delilah…

Chocolate Labrador

She moved so fast, she was just a blur. (Not really, it was just me taking a crappy picture when I was trying to walk and keep up with her).

I was extra cautious about taking the dogs out off-leash because one of my sister’s neighbors saw a mountain lion walking up my sister’s driveway!

My sister and I did take the dogs for a nice walk on Saturday, but mostly we hung around the house, just spending time together.

The view from my sister’s dining room…

That’s Cannon Mountain in the distance.

The dogs are pretty respectful of each other. There were only a couple of times when JD was a jerk to Delilah and then a couple of times when Delilah was protective of our room, but for the most part the weekend passed without incident.

All too soon it was over and time to head home again.

How was your weekend? Did you do anything special?

It’s Been a Three Dog House

August 11, 2015 By Jodi

First things first!! Congratulations to our Omegease winners!! Dawn from NEPA Pets, Jo-Ann from Sand Spring Chesapeakes, Monika from Tails Around the Ranch, Tenacious Little Terrier and Rochelle Epstein!  You all should have e-mails from Steven from Finest for Dogs. He will help you with getting your free bottle of Omegease.  AND PLEASE, let me know how your pup is doing once you get started!

It’s Been a Three Dog House

Sunday I posted a photo of our daughter’s dog, Beau in my You Make Me Smile feature. Our daughter and Beau stayed with us this past week.   I admit I was nervous about Beau coming as the last time he was here, when he was just a puppy, the dogs hated him.

We started it out slowly. The first time Beau came over, he was outside in the yard, while Sampson and Delilah were inside. They never saw each other, in fact, I’m not sure if any of them knew the other(s) were there.

The second time Beau came over was when Delilah saw him through the glass door, but was really cool about it.

The next time Beau was over both Sampson and Delilah watched him from the little balcony. Our daughter took him out of the car, walked him up and down the street, put him back in the car and the dogs simply stayed and watched. (Which was amazing in itself, since they feel it’s their duty to let any dog on the street know that they are in fact, watching it.)

Then came the big day. We asked our daughter to meet us up at the park. Delilah and I started walking in, while Hubby and our daughter let Sampson and Beau get reacquainted.  Delilah and I slowed so our daughter and Beau could walk with us. Side by side we walked into the park.

You snort a lot. Did anyone ever tell you that?

When we got to the field, we let the dogs leashes drop and let them explore and run around. Beau was interested in Sampson and Delilah, but neither one of them was interested in Beau.

After a few minutes we headed back to the house and Beau came inside with us.

Bulldog and Rubber Chicken

Beau found the toy box and promptly fell in love with the rubber chicken.

Delilah wasn't thrilled and climbed right into Daddy's lap for comfort.

Delilah wasn’t thrilled and climbed right into Daddy’s lap for comfort.

Sampson just went downstairs to hang with Grandma.

We told our daughter, the only thing we will ask is you remove Beau from the room when we feed the dogs, because Delilah can be possessive of her food, and we weren’t really sure how she’d react with another dog close by.

Here’s how that first day went:

Beau kept approaching Sampson and Delilah, but neither of them wanted anything to do with him. After Sampson went downstairs Delilah and I went into our room, put a little music on and chilled.

Beau ventured into our room. Delilah growled and let him know, this was our safe place. I got up and escorted him out.

After a while Delilah got up and went out into the living room.

The next thing I heard was a whole lot of barking/growling/snarking, then some yelling.  Then I heard Hubby say, “Come here pretty” and he led Delilah into the room.

She wasn’t shaken up per say, but she was happy to climb on the bed with me and get some loving. When I touched her neck it was soaking wet and I was afraid to pull my hand away because I was afraid it would be blood.

I was never more happy to have a drool covered hand in my life.

I wasn’t in the room so I can only relay what was told to me. And depending upon who you speak with, will depend upon which dog was at fault.

They both however agreed upon this. Our daughter sat down to eat her food and Delilah of course was glued to her side at the table. Beau came up behind Delilah, presumably to get some food (our daughter feeds him bits from her meal) and Delilah went after him.

Whether it was because Delilah was letting him know who was top dog when it came to food or whether it was because he came up behind her (which she absolutely hates) I really don’t know. All I know is dogs snarky at each other is pretty loud and scary. Thankfully neither of them was injured. (Although my daughter did say she found what appeared to be a bite mark behind Beau’s ear a few days later. He had however just spent a month with a rambunctious little Newfoundland puppy (can you really call a Newfie ‘little”?) so I’m guessing he could have had some marks from that.)

For the most part, that is the worst of the issues. My guys never really warmed up to him even though he did keep trying. There were also a couple of times when Sampson snarled at him because he came near him, but mostly my guys did their very best to avoid him at all costs.

Our daughter moved to her own place yesterday and I’m not sure how Beau did, but I can tell you Sampson and Delilah were quite happy.

Golden Lab with Toy

There was some of this going on.

And a whole lot of squeaking of this guy going on.

And a whole lot of squeaking of this guy.

How do your dogs do when other people visit with their dogs?

Why Pictures of My Dogs Make Me Sad

May 29, 2015 By Jodi

So while prepping all the posts I needed to have ready for the days I’m in Nashville, I went to my pictures for inspiration. I mean usually I rely on the dogs for inspiration, but since I won’t be hanging with them for a few days, I needed to go to the archives.

While I was skimming through thousands (yes, I really do have thousands of pictures of my dogs) I found my eyes tearing up with sadness over some of them.

None of them are sad pictures. But some of them did invoke memories.

Let me show you. (Lots of pictures, but hopefully not a lot of words.)

Golden Lab

Vacation

This picture was Sampson’s first trip to North Carolina, it makes me sad because I feel like he should have had more vacations in fun places.

Chocolate Lab

“Baby” Delilah

This picture is when she first joined our pack. It is the closest thing I have to what she might have looked like as a puppy. I wish I could have seen her as a puppy.

Golden Lab Puppy

Baby Sam

This is my baby puppy dog, he was probably about a day old here. I miss his sweet little puppy breath.

Off leash walking

Off leash walking

I used to love walking the dogs off-leash, but since Delilah can’t be trusted not to run off, she has to be on leash.

Chocolate Lab

She loves to swim.

Delilah loves to swim. She will play fetch for hours if you let her swim. Sadly, there aren’t many places around here she can swim safely. (Oh and did I mention, she can’t be trusted off leash?)

Golden Lab and Chocolate Lab

Time flies so fast.

One of my favorite pictures of my grandson and my dogs. They’ve all gotten so much older.

Golden and Chocolate Labs

Playing in the field

I miss the days when the dogs would run and wrestle in the field. As Sampson has aged their wrestling is limited.

Chocolate Lab counter surfs

Always hungry

She’s always scouting for food, it saddens me that whatever happened in her past, we haven’t been able to assure her we will always provide for her.

Chocolate Lab

Training class

One of our last training classes. I miss the challenge of training class and the special time we share together.

Chocolate lab balances on log

Wood walking

Once upon a time we did all kinds of fun things on our walks. I need to remember to start incorporating these things again.

Golden Lab

One of my favorite hiking photos.

Before Delilah we used to hike in so many different places. Sampson loved it so much, it saddens me that the dogs and I walk alone now, so our hiking areas are limited.

Chocolate Lab

The bugs love that sweet chocolate blood.

Look at her poor swollen eyes. The bugs absolutely love her and try to eat her alive, which severely limits our wood walks.

Golden Lab

Look mom, no gray.

Any picture of Sampson without gray in his face makes me sad. I know the time that we’ve had is longer than the time we have left and that just breaks my heart.

Chocolate Lab

A fun day at the pool.

She had so much fun that day, jumping and racing for the toy. That night she had her first incident with pain, which took us 18 months to figure out what it was. I will always feel guilty and wonder if her jumping didn’t bring it on.

Golden Lab

Boo boo wrist.

Looking back I can see that Sampson’s been in pain for some time. It makes me sad that we can’t figure out what is bothering him.

Chocolate Lab

Love

Her first day of being loved. Enough said.

Chocolate and Golden Lab

Chubby butts.

Look at how chubby they both were. Seeing a fat dog makes me sad, but the good thing is they are thinner and healthier now.

Do you have pictures of your dogs that make you sad? Why?
