It’s Here!!

August 25, 2013 By Jodi

It’s time!  It’s time!!  The 2nd Annual Dogs of Blogville Contest has now begun.

First I’d like to say a really BIG thank you to Julie from the Daily Dog Blog, she’s worked so hard resizing all the photos so they would work nice on the blog.  She will also be the one who handles all the technical details of the design and upload of the calendar.  She is truly one amazing lady and a really good friend. Make sure you stop by and say hi.

So this is it.  We’ve crossed our i’s and dotted our t’s t’s and dotted our i’s. We’ve been as thorough as we can be and we’ve learned a few things along the way and I’m sure we’ll learn a few more things in the next week.  In fact, I think I’m going to make a page specifically for this contest.  Hopefully next year will run much smoother for us. 😀

This is the voting portion of the Dogs of Blogville Calendar contest.  It’s all about YOU and how YOU promote your dogs/blog.

Here’s how it works.  You tweet, facebook, blog whatever you want but direct people to come and vote for your photo.  The photo with the most votes will be on the cover AND will get their choice of which month they’d like to be featured in.  I have to forewarn you, last year’s winner All Things Collie really brings their A game, this lady is hardcore. 🙂

The next eleven photos with the top votes will be featured in order (minus whatever month the winner chooses.)

All participating dogs will be featured in the calendar on the back page(s).

After the voting process is complete, we will give you information about ordering.

It’s not so much a popularity contest as much as it is you getting the word out and having people come and vote.

I’ve tried to organize everything alphabetically but I’m human and I can make mistakes, if you see one please let me know and I’ll do my best to fix it.

One more quick note before I turn you loose to look at photos.  You will notice that there are two blogs in the list that don’t have photos.   I’ve contacted both blogs and am giving them another day to get their photos in, if I don’t have have their photos by Monday, I will sadly have no other choice but to remove them from the competition.

About the voting process.  Voting opens today at 12:00 noon Eastern Standard time (NYC) it is limited to one IP ADDRESS per 24 hour period.   For those of you with multi-computer households it is important to remember that any smart phone, tablet, computer that shares a network also shares an IP address.  If you vote on your computer then try and vote on your phone, chances are it won’t work, unless you disconnect from your network. If someone tells you they tried to vote and they can’t, then that is probably the issue.

Voting ends next Sunday, September 1, 2013 at noon.

The voting tool is AFTER the photos, all you do MOM is scroll down to the little circle next to Sampson and Delilah’s name and click it.   The move down to the button that says VOTE and click that.  Easy Peasy!!

Here is the list of participating dogs along with their blogs.

2nd Annual Dogs of Blogville Calendar Contest

August 14, 2013 By Jodi

The Daily Dog Blog and Heart Like a Dog are proud to announce the 2nd annual Dogs of Blogville Calendar contest.

Since this is only the second time we have done this, we’re still learning, but we do have SOME rules.

They go like this:

  1. We (The Daily Dog Blog and Heart Like a Dog) make the rules.
  2. Submission portion of contest begins immediately.
  3. Photos are limited to one photo per blog (so we can showcase as many dogs as possible.)  If you have more than one dog that represents your blog you can either submit one dog or a photo with both (all) your dogs.
  4. Dogs who have crossed the bridge are eligible to participate.
  5. Photos should be submitted to stone.jodi@ymail.com AND julesmelfi@gmail.com
  6. No photo editing allowed.  Any editing deemed necessary will be done by Julie.
  7. Photo should be a good, high resolution digital image (11″ x  8½” @ 300 dpi output, the largest setting on minimum 6MP camera.) Best quality images are approximately 2832 pixels by 2128 pixels at 300 dpi and a minimum of 1MB.(I have no idea what this means, but thankfully Julie does!)
  8. We strongly suggest your photo is oriented in Landscape as opposed to Portrait.  (This makes for easier formatting when designing the calendar.
  9. Submission portion of contest ends Tuesday, August 20th at midnight.
  10. We reserve the right to use your submitted photo on our blogs for promotional purposes only, with credit given to the photo/blog owner of course!
  11. Voting will begin Saturday, August 24th at 12:01 AM and end Saturday, August 31st at 11:59 PM.
  12. Voting is limited to once every 24 hours. (More instructions when the voting process begins.)

Last year our Dogs of Blogville Calendar contest raised right around $500 which was donated to Roxanne Hawn at Champion of My Heart. This year our fundraising efforts will be for Benny The Frenchie.

For those of you new to this blog, you can read all about last year’s contest here.

All I can say is the contest exceeded my expectations, and Julie designed a damn fine, high quality calendar that I’ve been enjoying all year.

I mean really, how can you look at this picture every day in August and not smile?

Frankie and Ernie

Frankie and Ernie

.

Yup, it’s Frankie and Ernie from FRANKly and ERNESTly Speaking.

Last year we had 20 dogs enter the contest and I’m very pleased to say that Julie managed to fit all the dogs in the calendar.  Of course there are no guarantees we can do that again this year, it all depends on the number of entries.

So start digging through your photos or grab your camera and your dog(s) and start snapping. 🙂  You’ve got one week.

Now go!

Update to yesterday.  Yes, I got the video to load on YouTube (and after it did I flipped a big middle finger to Apple, take that!) so as I promised, here is the video showing exactly WHAT Delilah will do for a frozen piece of pineapple.

At the Southern Tire and Muffler

August 5, 2013 By Jodi

Saturday morning we packed up the car and the dogs and hit the road for home.  We left Tennessee around 9:15. We’d been driving for just over three hours when a truck driver passed us and honked his horn.  We knew the flaps for the car top carrier weren’t tucked in so we kept on driving.  A few minutes later a car passed us, beeped and pointed down, like we were dragging something.

Hubby pulled off the road and into a gas station and we had a tire going flat. After examining the tire he determined there was something in there and we should be able to get it plugged.

There was a visitor center not far off the exit and one of the volunteers gave me the phone number and directions to a local garage that could take care of the problem.

They were closed.

Hubby wanted to put air in the tire and while he did that, I asked my assistant Siri to find me a Wal-Mart which just happened to in the shopping plaza across the street.

We limped over to the Wal-Mart but because the object in our tire wasn’t perfectly centered within the tread, they couldn’t plug it.  (Who knew Wal-Mart required such perfection?)

They sent us to a BP down the road, which turned out to be the original service station which was still closed.

Hubby was getting (ergh….what’s a nice way to put this?) pissy.  He asked a gentleman at a gas station if he knew where we could get a tire fixed and he directed us to Main Street.  On our way I happened to spot Southern Tire and Muffler and their bay doors were open!!

Hubby hopped out of the car and went inside.  It was now close to 1:00 pm.  When he came back to the car he said, “They closed at 12:00.”

“You’re kidding!” I exclaimed, “Well can they tell us where we can get it fixed?”

“They said they’d fix it for us.”

Yup, Heart like a dog found someone with a Heart like a dog.

photo (7)

He said his name was Cookie, does that mean he has some?  Will he share? Inquiring dogs want to know.

photo (9) Here it is.  The thorn in our side nail in our tire.

While Cookie was fixing our tire, Delilah was making friends with Mike.  This is odd.  Delilah does not typically gravitate towards people.  She will check them out and then she’s on her way.  BUT she loved Mike and he loved her too.  He told us he has two black labs and always wanted a chocolate.

I thought for a second I was going to have to wrestle him for her.

Cookie had our tire plugged in no time flat.  (he he, pun intended.)

We loaded BOTH dogs in the car and were soon on our way.

So if you’re ever in the Wytheville, VA area and find yourself in need of a muffler or tires, make sure you head on down to Southern Tire and Muffler, ask for Cookie and tell him Heart Like a Dog sent you.

**This is not a paid or sponsored post, simply my way of thanking Cookie and Mike for taking time away from their families to help a couple of complete strangers.**

Cookie and Mike, you guys rock!!

Have you ever been traveling and found unexpected kindness?  How do you thank someone for going above and beyond?
